Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes you should defo get one, for the sake of 100 euro it is a great lens to have in your bag. Mine comes everywhere with me.

Not sure about Sony but, they are approx 130 euro new for Nikon i think.

Do!
Mine barely ever leaves my camera. Got a Minolta 50mm for under E100 on ebay a year ago and it's my best purchase yet.

Tallon,

I'm looking at getting a nifty fifty for my Sony A550, the choices seem to be:

Minolta 50mm F1.7/1.4
I had one years ago, super lens but my A550 is not a full frame so would have "cropping" factor which would mean that this would be equivalent of about 75mm. A fast lens but not really the focal length I want. These are going for €150+ used to be less.

Sony DT 50mm F1.8 SAM lens
Reviews of this seem to be good, all plastic body, but as it's designed for cameras with APS-C sensor, it'll give me the focal length I want. Retail is about €190 in Dublin

Sony DT 50mm F1.4 lens
Again, good reviews and designed for cameras with APS-C sensor, but its about €390 and too expensive for me.

If you can get a 50mm for about €100 then I reckon so long as the lens is in good nick then you're getting a decent price.

Yep, do.

I can lend you mine if you want to have a play, but it'd have to be fairly short-term unfortunately.

Thanks guys

I just bought this

I didn't think he'd accept my offer, but he did :)

Hopefully it's in good nick

Very nice, enjoy. That's the same type of 50mm that I had, always liked the lens, the only reason I sold it was to fund the move to digital. I'm sure you'll be very happy with, good price!

Just to correct myself in previous post. Turns out that I was incorrect in my assumption that the DT version gave true 50mm on APS-C sensors. According to Sony Style site:

Focal Length (35mm equivalent) : APS-C 35mm eqv. 75mm

Congrats! That's the same lens I have, you're going to have loads of fun with it :D

Do people not feel claustraphobic using a 50mm on a non-full-frame DLSR? It's really a mild telephoto more than anything else.

A little bit, but it's the fastest lens I can afford at the moment, and it's given me the ability to take indoor pics without flash, so I'll put up with the fact that it's a little tight sometimes.

It's why I'm reluctant to get one until I can buy a full frame. A Sony DT 35mm would convert much closer to 50mm for said APS-C sensors but hey, each to their own and as mentioned, it does allow for better shots in low light.

Great lens, had one for my old A200. I think it's sharper than the Sony/Nikon 1.8 newer ones, and it's built much, much better. I sold mine for €100, great re-sale on them.

Congratulations Tallon, the nifty fifty is a great lens to have in your arsenal. What do you think you'll be using yours for?

Portraits and car shoots I think

Can't wait to do some lego-bokeh

I'm so excited :)

Ah excellent I don't think you'll be disappointed. I love mine for portraits. Just remember that it is a short zoom so it's not ideal if you're taking photos in a tight spot. Other than that- it's all good.
