what is the difference between road shoes & tri shoes?

Trishoes normally have 1 velcro strap, road shoes could have 3
1 is quicker and easier for transition, 3 means a better fit and more efficient use of power on the bike

Trishoes the strap opens to the outside of the shoe, road shoe the strap opens against the inside
If you want to leave the shoes open and set up on the pedals in transition then if using road shoe the straps will be rubbing against the chain, which probably won't cause any serious mechanical issues but will likely drag dirt across your lovely new shiny bike :(
