Is it feasible to play Dark Souls as a jack-of-all-trades? I'm about level 28 IIRC and haven't specialised at all; I started as a pyro and use fire ball or fire orb relatively regularly (and have upgraded the pyro glove thing), I also use the sorcerers catalyst for soul arrows, but mainly play as a straight forward fighter using a shield to block and then counter-attack with the drake sword. I also use my short bow +3 often if needed. I'd like to continue putting points into most of the attributes and remain versatile as a result; is this do-able or recommended?

Yeah for sure. Alot of the weapons/shields have pretty low reqs bar the massive STR weapons ones, and pyromancy doesn't need any stat investment at all.

With pyro it doesn't matter, anyone can use it, stats don't dictate pyromancy(apart from dex for casting speed), pyro is down to the glove level and magic boosting items(dragoncrest ring, crown of dusk etc). The main choices are str or dex, int(magic) or faith(miracles) or no int\fa and use the points to boost vit\str\end\dexinstead. You're level 28, its early still. Spreading your stats will put you at a disadvantage in PVP as the vast majority stick to a few set stats and get the appropriate build to maximise damage output.

Handy site for planning out and see how your stats go.

archers on anor londo are giving me nightmares.. have tried at least 20 times to get past them.. had to turn the game off,, before the ps3 went out the window...

sprint up to the top of the ledges
turn right and get that archer , once your close to him he will take out his sword
at this point the other archer to the left wont be able to hit you because their is something blocking his way
so take out that archer turn left take out that one
and get the soul at the end , i think its a soul anyway?
pretty easy part to be honest once you get the hang of it

those things that fly they were a pain in me hole haha

its also possible to run from the bonfire in anor londo, down the elevator and all the way to the right hand archer without stopping or fighting anything. Takes a bit of practice but I don't even bother fighting my way there anymore. If I have souls/humanity on me I tend to take it slow otherwise I'm pegging it :D

edit: Haven't played in ages but a little update on my soul level 2 Cleric. I have beaten Sif, Pinwheel and Nito but got stuck on the four kings. Seems like another huge O+S type war of attrition.

Nice man. I just discovered league of legends and path of exile on the PC and had zero dark souls time. Up to O&S but have yet to attempt them. Playing as a Hunter

the pyro class with the master key as your gift is probably the best to go for when playing first time. if you have not gone so far , might be worth restarting.

Pfffft, I've often restarted 15 or 20 hours in. Souls fever will consume you, you'll be dreaming about different builds and what to spend your souls on.:p

Warrior is a grand choice, with only a few points in STR he can 2hand the Zweihander very quick early game. The range, damage and stun on the Zwei is so good, one of my favourite weapons in the game. Although for someone starting Dark Souls 2handing a weapon is probably not a good idea since a shield is really good for a beginner.

Sticking with the sword and shield combo alright at the minute and throwing my souls into strength and endurance

Everyone died/dies a lot. You will get annoyed, frustrated and swear you'll never play again. But you're four hours in... the addiction is already too far gone for you to be helped.

Warrior is fine. Just try to focus on a few select stats when leveling up. Vitality and endurance are always good but don't try become a jack of all trades as its very weak in Dark Souls. Instead either focus on working towards holding a new weapon or solely on Strength/Dexterity. It'll all make sense soon enough

    edit: ha ha ninja post.

I've swore several times never to play this game again and I kept coming back. I completed it 3 times:pac:

I think the best thing to do is stick with one build and see how it goes rather that going Jack of all trades and potentially gimping yourself. My strength build was great for taking down bosses but I found that it sucked in PvP. I'm now currently using a dex build with Havel's ring and I'm having a much easier time of it in PvP.

Thats it! keep reading this thread and decided I'm gonna give Demons Souls another go. Got a loan of it before and dragon kept killing me in the 1st level. Then my frustration was causing mistakes to die even more and I gave it back. Getting a loan of it again to give it another go, hopefully more patient go.

The Dragon on the bridge? You just gotta run across following him as he flames the bridge. Also make sure your under 50%(I think its 50%, could be 25% forget) equip load so you run at max speed. Hold O to sprint :P

This reminds, can I sell off the items I pick up and is the there a quicker to drink from my esther bottle than going through the menu's?

Ya I think I had a load of armour on, could never make it across. When does the game save? Is it after every level ?

Yeah you can sell stuff to a character later though its not really worth it and your Estus flask should be equipped to one of your item slots so you can use it by pressing X/square.

The game saves very often, every few minutes, new area, new item etc., You'll see a symbol flashing in the top right corner I think.

Damn, you must have removed the Esther flask from your quickmenu. You can equip it into your quickmenu and press Square/X to drink it. I couldnt imagine going through the menu everytime just to drink a flask

It saves all the time. If you quit the game before the dragon bridge next time you load it up everything in the world will be the same and you will be at the dragon bridge. Its a nice system that has consequences for killing NPC. Instead of saving before an area or an NPC killing them then reloading

No its there in the quick menu,I thought I had tried every button to see if there was a shortcut for it but most have missed square somehow.
You can imagine how awkward it was for during boss fights, having to leg it way away from them just so I cud go through the menus to use it.
Actually got quite fast at it but knew there had to be a shortcut

Excellent thanks lads. thats why I ended up rushing, I only get bursts of gaming time and I tried to clear the level fast to get a save point. Il take my time next go around!

Is there a level limit you can hit with your character?

It caps at around lvl 782 I think. Most people only go to around 100 to 120ish for PVP.

my only tip for you is only focus on ornstein or smough , if possible try to defeat smough first cause for me atleast ornstein is easy to dodge , he basically has only 3 moves if i recall .

Be sure to summon Solaire as well, he distracts one while you hack away at the other.

There's 3 other lord souls to acquire. There's one beyond the catacombs, one beyond New Londo ruins and one in Lost Izalith beyond the Demon Ruins which you can get to from Quelaag's domain.
