Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Excellent news!

Yay! Been waiting for this to be confirmed for a while now. I imagine it is taking the slot that is spare on the BBC HD transponder, so I will update the table around April time with the new tuning details. :D

We know some of the Freesat channels are broadcast FTA before they are officially on the Freesat EPG. Will this be the case with Ch4HD.?

As Channel 4 HD will have to be on Astra 2D before it can broadcast in the clear for rights reasons, they will have to start a test on the transponder which may run for a week or two before launch. Around mid-late March you may see some Channel 4 HD tests starting. Unless they have struck a deal to remain on the Sky transponder they are on and go FTA from there, in which case you won't see a thing for free until the day of launch.

Good to see Freesat get 'em at last.

Are bricks and mortar retailers in ROI allowed sell Freesat boxes?

Argos don't carry them as they do in the UK.

I got my Humax in Newry (I was up north anyway)

Some of the online sat retailers here carry them too.

    Nothing illegal about selling them.

    DID sell them.

I imagine that with Channel 4 HD's move to 2D, a new HD channel will take it's old place and launch on Sky... Film 4 HD perhaps...?

No idea, but I would presume that it can be added to Other Channels.

Film 4 HD is a Virgin Media exclusive. It would depend how long the current exclusivity deal is for.

It launched on 20th July 2010 so maybe the exclusivity deal was for the first year? We could see Film 4 HD on Sky over the summer this year?

What sort of programmes are on C4HD? Is it a simulcast of C4? And is it true HD programmes, upscaled SD, or a mixture of both?

    Yes it is.

A mixture of both. A similar amount to ITV / BBC 1 HD, perhaps a little more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,611 ✭✭✭Rick_

Channel 4 HD is a direct simulcase of Channel 4. Any programmes in HD are shown that way and everything else is upscaled. A good portion of their home made and imported shows and films are in HD already and it's increasing all the time.

Good to hear that. Getting rid of my basic Sky+ package at €24pm and buying a Humax Freesat+ instead. The vast majority of what I watch is on 'normal' channels anyway.

Brilliant News, I wonder will the boffins at Freesat be able to lure FIVE HD onto the platform?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,050 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Five I could live without. Its the equivalent of tabloid TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,936 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Five also said that they could not afford to launch a HD channel. Then, Sky stepped in and before you know it - there is Five HD - but it's exclusive to Sky. I assume they are locked into another one of those Sky exclusivity agreement. At the start I believe they only had Home and Away and Neighbours in HD!

Sky helped Channel 4 start up Channel 4 HD so who's to say Channel 5 won't do something similar once their contract is up? Richard Desmond owns Channel 5 now and has his own media empire, and I'm pretty sure Murdoch and him don't get along, Channel 5 have already ended their contract early with Sky News to provide their news programmes, so perhaps getting out of any Sky related contracts is also a priority for him. I imagine once suitable space is available on 2D then Channel 5 HD and the spinoff's will move over and become FTA like Channel 5 is at the moment, but this may not happen until late 2011 or even 2012 when the satellites are up and running.

great news, broadcasts catching up with TV specs, programs will be the same obviously but looking forward to quality improvement (will eat more hard drive space though)
