    Commitment from Government
A maximum of 5% of fixed residences and businesses in the NBS coverage area may be provided with a service using satellite.

    Commitment from Three
in a limited number of cases 3 will make available a satellite product, which may cover up to 8% of the NBS areas
    .

As at 5/11/2010 the total take-up of NBS internet connections was 26,721.

Take-up figures for Electoral Divisions in Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim have now been released.

The figures show that 196 of the 557 EDs fail the 8% maximum satellite standard set by Three for each Electoral Division. If the standard is set at 5% Government maximum, a further 56 EDs fail; that's 45% of the total.

The reason is clear; electoral divisions in West Galway, West Mayo, West Cork, West Kerry, Cavan, Leitrim Donegal and Wicklow have been either poorly provisioned or not provisioned at all.

Also we know from Midband forum that many many people do not get the minimum speeds and are "fobbed off".

Many Sat systems used a regular Retail package that did not meet NBS cap critera.

    Problems are almost certainly under-reported.

I said at the start that the number of masts was a fraction of what would be required.

Government helped fund rollout of a Mobile Phone network, that needed to be increased (over 2 years overdue I think) to meet licence conditions.

IMO the whole NBS is a failure. Also because 3 was inexpert at Satellite they priced too low and are losing a fortune on the Satellite connections. Actually generally 3 is priced too low. They are losing money as they don't have the larger voice customer subsidies that O2, Vodafone and Meteor relative to Data numbers.
