Just wonderin does anyone know if you are on welfare payment and currently in a council house, will the council allow you back on the list if you move out of the house and leave your exwife and kids in it? or would this be classed as giving up your house therefore the council have no legal obligation to rehouse you??? also would you be entitled to rent allowance?

any help appreciated thanks (also posted on state benefits)

A single adult is unlikely to be housed by the council (they don't have many suitable properties anyway).

The likely scenario is that the person would essentially join at the end of the queue, with low priority (children / families get housed ahead of adults) and that they would be entitled to rent allowance.

thanks for that as long as he would get rent allowance he should be ok cause cant see him being able to afford rent on his own just yet.

A single adult has the same rights as a family on the housing list & is allowed on the housing list should he & his partner go their separate ways.

Depending on where the individual applies for housing, will have an impact on how long he can be waiting for housing i.e Dublin City Council has the largest social housing stock in Dublin with plenty of one-bed dwellings for single people on the housing list mainly in the city centre within the canals.

Whereas suburban councils or county councils would have less housing stock for single individuals so a longer wait is on the cards...
