she should have pleaded guilty and she would not have been jailed. she clearly annoyed the judge. i feel sorry for her three year old.

surely the judges mood should not be a factor. Judges are largely unaccountable. this womans child will be punished as well just because she 'annoyed' the judge. Get a grip.

What point is he missing? She stole something, and got sentenced. If she did not want to be convicted of a crime and sentenced then dont commit a crime.

Boo hoo. Shes a thief who wouldn't take responsability for what she did. Prison is where people like that go. The fact that she was a mother doesn't matter. Unless her motherly instinct was somehow the reason for her crime.

Yea, not accepting responsibility for what she did was probably a big factor in the 3 month sentence alright.

People who steal a tenners worth of goods do not usually go to prison, the judge should lay off the crack pipe.

like women who illegally get pregnant through rape in some countries, how nice it would be to see things in black and white

It depends on their attitude towards their crime and their previous convictions.

Fair play to the judge. I don't think the punishment is too harsh, small punishments send out the wrong signal, and before scum like this make a decesion to rob, they weigh up the risks, and what they think will happen if they get caught.

She obviously though she would get away with it, and if she was caugh, that she would just get a slap on the wrist.

She will think twice next time.

I just hope milord takes the same uncompromising line the next time that some wealthy and influential lady who lunchs klepto is up in front of him

Eh? Struggling to make sense of that post, to be honest. If a woman is raped and subsequently becomes pregnant, that is hardly a conscious decision made by her. And I don't think any woman will be jailed for falling pregnant after a rape. Comparing that scenario to some woman who goes into a store and deliberately steals an item of clothing is bizarre.

not that it has anything to do with this case

In iran a woman was sentenced to be stoned for becoming pregnant after rape

She broke the law in ireland, the same place she is going to serve her sentence. We comment on the sentence she got in ireland based on her stealing in ireland. Bringing a place like iran into it is a bit bizare really. People are saying she broke the law so should accept the sentence. No one said a woman in iran wore shorts or kissed a man in public etc so she should accept being stoned to death.

You should become a judge, i might go down and get myself a free tv and a few other bits, no fear of being jailed.

Who`s law. Irans laws have nothing to do with this. In iran you can be stoned to death for doing nothing. Here you can get jailed for stealing from shops. You find a relevent connection there?

Er, yeah. But what has the law in Iran got to do with the law in sunny Ireland?

I've plenty to be proud of, its just I dont feel the need to go shouting it off the rooftops. One thing is for sure though, although some people's lack of a sense of justice on this thread has let them down, my sense of justice will always be one of the things I pride myself most on. It's the measure of good character in a man.

once again nothing im retorting to an earlier comment regarding the punishment to be irelavent and deserved if the law is broken.

Yes but your bringing into the discussion laws which are in oppressive dictatorship countries. Hitler, stalin, sadam hussein etc had such laws, some people broke them laws because of their own existance, so bringing such laws in as examples to your arguement are just nonsense.
