As part of a prep ride for the TDC I did the Vee climb (from Clogheen) and then down to Lismore and onto Tallow. I've good news and bad news:
Good: the climb up the Vee from Clogheen is very nice, ie. scenic and no killer gradient.
Bad: the descent to Lismore is............painful, ie. very bumpy, my bottle cage came loose and the top of my pump fell out !! The total descent is 12km, and the first 8km of this is done on a very bumpy surface, BEWARE ;)

Is Silversprings not in Mayfield, Cork City. Thought this was a Midleton Event ! Are there no hotels in Midleton ?????
I recently was in contact with someone involved in organising this event and by all accounts any communications made to local hotels received little attention - so rock on in Silversprings !!!!

If anyone is heading down from Kilkenny/ Carlow or nearby I've a favour to ask.

If your looking for a spin I'm afraid I'm gonna be in Cork before the event so no use to you but if you need something dropped down pm me, I'm based in Waterford but we could meet during the week.
I would love to do it but I would be arriving alone. Would feel a little awkward by myself. Has anyone else done it as a loner? Also I have no experience cycling with a group but I do do 200 - 300 K a week so fitness is fine.

I usually turn up at these events alone, just look out for boards gear and ride with them. problem solved!

Is this the same decent into Lismore on the 100km? Captain - cant pick you up but if you need a lift from Waterford then im heading up in the van on Saturday morning -

No, the 100k route doesn't use the Vee. Murf, is that for the 160 only?

Nope, the 100km and 165km routes are heading off together again, same as last year, at 8.30. Sign on from 7am Saturday morning

Thanks for the offers guys, I'm not looking for a lift, I've a magazine from 1982 with Stephen Roche on the cover which I'm looking for him to autograph so I can auction it for charity. I've already sent one of the organisers and email and it should be OK. I work weekends so I can't go myself (and hence why it's a rare occasion when you see me at a sportive).

Apologies Captain but I won't be able to hang around after so couldn't guarantee I'd get the job done and magazine back - unless you know someone that I could give it to before the start?

I hope the weather improves otherwise the Sidi's, shorts and whites will be replaced with shoe covers, tights and yellows. TdC is a bit of a bling event, shame if it rains, rain jackets just arn't euro...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

What's the story with overshoes if its just going to be pissing down all day, necessary or just heavy wet neoprene anchors? I'm using the PX ones.

I'm just not used to being on the bike for more than 2hrs in the soaking wet :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 bassmaster

It is a bling event but if you cycle hard enough you wont need the covers or rain wear remember no pain no gain ! give it holly the 160 group will finish in bout 5 hours & 100 km group will do so in just over 3 hours so if you keep up with them you wont need rainwear ! best of luck Lad !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 bassmaster

My guess is to have waterproof but if is raining all day water will get in eventually and then they only become extra weight have just contacted a3 cyclist who informs me to to use them anyway as its best to keep water off feet as long as possible regardless of weight issue ! hope this helps you !

It's called Tour de Cure, not Tour de to the hospital cos you got pneumonia from cycling in the rain for 6 hours :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

    Cheers bassmaster.

    Lol bouldwhacker, we'll see:eek:

If today's weather was anything too go by it should be interesting. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

If its raining I'm wearing covers, yea your feet will still get wet but not cold. If its raining you'll get wet regardless but getting cold 80 or 100km from the finish will be a rotten way to ride.
Forecast isn't too bad for sat but like Dubba said if its like today it'll be an endurance, might even sneak a cap into my pocket if it is.

Dubba, (just following on from the PX thread the other day) will you be on your Planet X? Would mind having an up close look if you were. What size is it, I reckon I'll need an XL frame judging by the geo of my Spesh in comparison to the PX site - though there's actually no comparison due to the compactness.

yr.no is forecasting rain too, BTW !

If its pissing down I'm staying in bed. Sod the €50!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Looks like the back of a Corn Flakes box, do we have to put it together ourselves?:pac:

Seriously though, first impressions, I think I prefer last years one, I'm not sure what the faded colour is, kinda burnt orange?
I do have a feeling it will look much better in reality, I think I like it!

yea, sew yourself patterns, that would raise a few eyebrows :D

possibly too much white for me, lets see how striking the other colours are in reality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭seve65

i remember when my mum used to let me choose patterns from a catalogue, so she could knit the jumper for me.

Oh aye yes a gaudy coloured punk red and black bumble bee style mohair wool cycling shirt I can see the future style now !

Hi Plastik, yea I'll be on my SL PRO PX, its a medium and I'm just shy of 6 foot so it needed a longer stem to suite me and also showing max seatpost.

Yea no problem with you taking a close look / short spin around, I'll be wearing the PX Blue LS Jersey that was on sale recently (probably with a gilet over tho).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,992 ✭✭✭Plastik

Magic, cheers I'll keep an eye out for you. I'll be in new Boards kit on a red Specialized.

    Interesting that you're on a M frame at a shade under 6ft. I'm 6 1 on a 58/XL frame at the moment!

Re the jersey, looks ok, the more white the better, especially in the dry hot Irish weather

Should it be renamed Tour De Rain (& we'll go to the pub for the Cure :p). I wonder is it possible they would cancel it if it rained really heavy, ie. flooding on roads (like this morning), and for safety reasons?:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭Beached

Looks like we will have 47K of cycling to see how things are going. At that point the 160 and 100K routes seem to split.
If the weather is really bad, then 100K will be enough for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

It may be wet but at least its warm, tougher it is the more satisfaction you get. at least the roads will be washed clean, it would be worse if it were dry until the morning when the surface would be slippy.
Me thinks the nice gear will have to wait for another day out to be shown off though they would look nice with the jersey, oh the dilemmas...... I really have little to worry about in my life really:rolleyes:

Can you buy the jersey on the day? Whacker, I'll be out with yourself with the TdeM group and that's who I went through for registration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

The jersey is included as part of your reg. payment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Yea they are for sale too, cant remember how much but well worth having. See you Sat!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Out for a spin tonight, man when it rains its raining hard, the eye brows are going back on the bike tonight, I only have them off three weeks....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Dubba

Bit warmer at least today, the last few days had torrential rain and was freezing - 10/11degrees.

Saturday looks like southerly winds like today which should keep the temp up a bit hopefully around 15 degrees:

cycled down to sign on and get the shirt, its not too bad, I like the full zip, sleeves are a bit wide for my (now) scrawny arms.

96 fm et al are still plugging the ride must be close to 2000 for the whole day.

they are still taking registrations in the morning, charging 10 euros more though (50).

Anyone having problems with the zip on the jersey, mine came off when i tried it on when i got home, they dont appear that strong...maybe a faulty one:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭karlmyson

I was pleasantly surprised with the jersey, thought the quality and fit was very good, and looks better in reality than in the pics.

if anyone wants to stay snug under the warmth of their duvet to avoid the inevitable soaking to the skin, I would be delighted to trudge through the rain in your place! :D

Well it stopped raining due to the fact that there can't be anymore rain left in the world! ;) Hopefully it'll hold off for as much of today as possible...
