Has viber been released for Blackberry yet? Very excited about the release of viber for android as I'll be able to keep in contact with my brother in Cambodia, what'sapp is one thing, but it will be great to talk to him again as he's never on skype!

This sounds good, one question that I haven't seen answered yet, is there any way to advertise your number as a free call? So for example, on my business website, how would I go about letting prospective customers know that their phone call to me would be free if they have Viber and can it only register the actual mobile number of my phone? Basically, the numbers on my website are re-routed to my mobile anyway, I don't display my mobile number on my website and would prefer not to but would like to let viewers see a "free" way to call me, not only because it's free, but it's also a great sounding technology and sounds like it has the potential to catch on providing of course mobile operators don't bar its use :o

Fantastic! So will everyone that has registered to receive the beta actually get it or is it selective? Only 2 weeks to wait, nice :)

    @squeakyduck

Viber will be compatible with Blackberry in the future, but since it's much more technologically complex than iPhone or Android, we don't have exact dates yet.

    @cormie

The only way to register your Viber in the first place is to receive an activation code via SMS. This means is that you can use any cellular phone in order to register and receive the code in (and this will be your Viber number).
If, theoretically, you can receive that SMS in a landline (real or redirected), then that will your Viber number as well.

Alternative solution: after you type your landline number in the registration screen and click "Continue", you move on to the next screen, where there is a "No Code" button on the top-right corner of the screen. Click it, and you'll move to an automated conversation screen. There you should be able to receive the code via a voice call to the number you initially typed!

    Hi everyone,
I know this is an Irish forum, but I thought I would try my luck here as well:

We (Viber Media) heard that Vodafone UK has recently decided to completely block VoIP over their 3G network. This means, of course, that Viber is also blocked and cannot be used on their 3G network.

Are there any Brits here who can confirm this? Do you know anyone living in the UK who is a Vodafone UK subscriber and can check this issue for us?

    I thank you in advance,
    Viber.

Viber, does Viber work on the iPod Touch? A friend has one and tried it but it did not work, however some reports online says it does.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Viber

We don't officially support iPod-Touch yet, but just like you wrote, it should work in general.

What exactly is your friend's problem? has he/she managed to install? is the problem only with making/receiving the calls?

This is very dissappointing for me. With the iphone contact list you just get a big list of names you scroll through. On android its way better. You still get the list, but you have a 0-9 keypad so you can type in the first few letters of the persons name.

This is one of the simple yet important reasons why Android is better than iPhone for me. Now I do have a HTC Desire with HTC Sense, not sure if all Android phones are the same, but having to go back to the the iPhone-like call app is dissappointing for me. Or am I wrong here?

Not sure what you mean here. On iOS you have the option to scroll to the top (by double tapping the status bar, if you are quite far down) which will bring up a search dialogue box and full keyboard to search for contacts. You can also tapmthe magnifying glass on the alphabet list to the right of the screen, which will do the same.

Viber and what's app should work fine with the iPod Touch. As espouse earlier you need to be able to validate the number, easy, as long as you have a phone of some sort, simply put that number in the verification box. The only thing to watch is that early versions of the iPod touch do not support mic input, so that might be why it was not working for your friend.

Anyone know if this will work on a HTC Hero running 2.1? Skype is an absolute disaster on that, never been able to make one decent phone call

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,781 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

It will once it is released for Android at the end of march. Not sure about 2.1, it should but you are better off updating to 2.2 anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,300 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

Don't think I can do that on the Hero

would be cool if anyone could straight something out for me...

thing is i got a fixed unlimited 3g data plan, with 20 mb per day, after that the speed drops down to 128kbps... my question will i still be able to use viber after the 20 mb, or is it to slow?

Viber uses 0.25MB/minute each way (in + out), that's 0.5MB/min total.
It should work, but the best idea is to simply try - at the end of a day, after you've used up your 20MB per day, make a Viber call on 3G and see if it works.

Do you have an update on the SMS feature for the iPhone? The last update I seen relating to this indicated a February release.

It should be released within the next week or so.
As you know, technological developments tend to be delayed due to unexpected obstacles. We, as a company that cares about users’ experience, prefer releasing a fully-working product a little later than expected, rather than releasing it as early as possible, yet buggy and disappointing.

Cool, no pressure :D I know all too well about release cycles!! I used to work with a PM who's motto was "Ship it", which basically meant get it out the door asap (letting the customers do the QA), get abuse, fix it and have customers who no longer trust your product :(

I was talking to someone the other day who said that depending on the time of day or night can affect how Viber works. he said once the USA comes on line it gets congested and sometimes you cannot make calls. Anyone else heard this?

congestion on the net (usually on 3G, but could theoretically also be possible on WiFi) can occur on busy hours, even in your own country.
Our servers are very capable of handling full network capacity even if it's worldwide. However, network speeds could drop in a certain country, and in certain areas, due to excessive internet use.

I suggest that in those times of alleged congestion, you might want to try Viber on WiFi, thus rule out the possibility you suggested.

    Hi everyone,

Has anyone installed the new iOS4.3 on his/her iPhone?
Are there any problems when using Viber after installing the new iOS?

    Thank you,

You'd be better off posting in the Apple forum here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1176 - not too many iPhone fans around here :p

Is the updated Viber app for iPhone with messaging due out soon? Around the same time as the Android app perhaps? Will the Android app have messaging when it comes out or will messaging follow?

    Thanks for the tip.
When the official version of Viber for Android is released, SMS feature will surely be inside.
About the beta of Android - I'm not sure, but I assume SMS will be already implemented inside as well.

SMS version for the current version is due in about a week or two. It's delayed beyond what we originally promised, we know, but we prefer delaying it and offering our users a fully-working, no-glitches application :)

    getting impatient....any update ?

    Unfortunately not yet.
We are finalizing the Beta version, so that should be sent out within the next few weeks.

SMS version (for iPhones) will be available even before that.
As I promised many times - once there are concrete dates (a few days before official release), I will inform this forum.

    Hello everyone,

I am excited to inform you that within the next few days our new version - Viber 2.0 - will be available for download in AppStore.

So what's new in Viber 2.0?

    - OUR NEW TEXT MESSAGING SERVICE!
    - TONS of bug fixes, including connectivity problems, issues with users who aren't identified as Viber users, and many many more.
    - An improved calling mechanism that allows you to know if the other side's Viber is actually ringing
    - A "Don't show this message again" option when trying to make a regular GSM call through Viber
    - A new, easy option to deactivate your Viber account from inside the application itself
    - Relocation of "Favorites" tab

I would like to remind you that our next goal is VIBER-FOR-ANDROID!
We estimate that this will be ready within the next month or so, but you'll have to stay tuned for updates as these estimates might change.

Thank you, and as always - feel free to ask any question.

    OK,
here's a question for you. Three actually.

Why do you think Android owners would be delighted to hear that you have prioritised the iPhone over Android? What were you hoping to achieve with that statement in an Android forum?

And given the delays on previous estimates for release of the android, why should we believe you this time?

Finally, given that you failed to take on board the information that this this is an android forum, can we take it that this is the level of attention to detail that you apply to all of your work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

Ah go way out of that. Viber has been really good at updating this forum with news on the status of Viber for Android and patiently answering every question. Hardly the end of the world for them to announce that the Iphone app is being updated with options that will hopefully be available on Android too.

I'm looking forward to getting it going on my Android phone and am glad that Viber has been so forthcoming with news and info.

    All,
Thank you for your kinds words, but allow me to still answer boardswalker's questions:

    1. I am posting it here because, as mentioned above, these updates will also be relevant for our upcoming Viber-for-Android version. Besides, some people here have asked me questions about using Viber on iPhone as well. Please scroll up the forum and you'll find it easily.

    2. Look, it is true that we are regretful for the inconvenience caused by the delay of the release of Viber-for-Android, but as I wrote before - we rather delay our release rather than release it as soon as possible. You don't have to believe me, but when it IS out and available, you'll understand why we held it back longer than expected - so it runs smoothly, and our users will enjoy.

    3. I can't really answer that last question. I'm here to help and assist our users, and this is the policy of our company - actively search for users with technical questions or suggestions for Viber, and take them into account. That's what i'm doing here.

    Viber.

Just for the record, Viber for Android was announced as coming soon last November. Thats almost four months ago now. Since then it always seems to be a month away and its still one month away. In smartphone time, its been a long time coming.

Secondly, the charter is clear that contributors "Do not sign up solely to promote your product or website." Viber's only posts in Boards are to promote Viber for Android.

Viber, this forum's charter expressly forbids users who "sign up solely to promote your product or website. If you feel it's something we could all benefit from then drop a PM to a mod with the relevant info and they will let you know if it's ok to post or not."

As such please PM all the Android forum moderators with your case to do so and until such time that we reply positively desist from posting on your company's product. Failure to do so will result in a permanent ban.

I respect your stance as mod and the charter but Viber has just been answering questions from posters. As I remember, a thread about viber was started and Viber signed up to answer questions that we all had.

For what it's worth, I think you are being very harsh and it is a bit ridiculous to ban a company representative from answering people's questions.

We've all asked to be kept updated by him and that is all that has been happening.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,777 ✭✭✭✭The Corinthian

Viber Media Inc is a commercial operation, not a charity. As such even if they do not charge end users, they have some form of business model to allow them to operate and as such is a breach of the charter.

The user Viber has not been banned or even infracted. No posts have been deleted or threads locked. However, (s)he has been asked to follow the procedure as laid out in the charter.

No further back seat modding will be tolerated on this.

    Hi Corinthian and all,

I apologize if my acts here seemed like "promoting" our product.
For the sake of the record, I have entered this thread AFTER I saw questions about Viber that were unanswered. The policy of our company is to find those users and provide them with the technical answers they seek.

Yes, I also posted messages about our upcoming versions, but I will discuss this issue with Corinthian in a Private Message in order to clarify what is right and wrong.
I apologize again if it seemed as if I was advertising Viber - that clearly wasn't the case, and I think the fact that 90% of my posts were actually ANSWERS can prove it.

About our business model - if anyone really wants to know: for now, Viber's focus is on adding platforms, adding features (such as text messages) and improving overall system performance. At the same time, we are working on additional future premium services that will generate revenues. The basic Viber service - Viber to Viber phone calls, and now text messages - will ALWAYS be free.

Thank you and have a good day,
    Ittai (Viber Media)

Yes, we HAVE been working on it for a while, but we rather wait and release a smoothly-running application, and I said.

About your criticism regarding my posts - please see the above post with my answers to that complaint.

    Regards.
