Medical options question

    Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I am hoping this is correct

    A few years ago developed a back problem , it was only in Jan 2010 I got it diagnosed and the consultant wanted to do a major operation but as I was on a temp contract in work and wouldn’t be able to get 6 months off to recover. At the time I had VHI cover but my wages are low and I had to l let my VHI laps . anyway I really need to get the operation done ( it’s not life threatening ) but now if I renew with VHI again they won’t cover a pre existing condition for 5 years . I am not entitled to a medical card

    The question is what are my options

    Will I be able to go public without a medical card , will I have to get a new public consultant as I was going private with my previous consultant . who do I need to contact in relation to this
