So if someone buys a track these days (typical cost E0.99) by an Irish group / artist from iTunes, how much would end up going to those artists and how much would ultimately end up with Apple / Steve Jobs . . .

With other options now available for buying downloads (7digital.ie, goldendiscs.ie etc.) might it make better sense to use these alternative sites? Do artists attain better revenue through them . . . or do these sites (especially in the case of goldendiscs.ie) involve / support more Irish jobs . . .

    Any and all insights appreciated.

Thanks, had seen that 7digital were behind another Irish download store, cdworld.ie.

If they are also behind goldendiscs.ie (yet to purchase from that domain myself) then I guess it becomes more of a 7digital versus iTunes situation and the pros / cons (if any) of using one over the other.

Although from what I have seen so far actually accessing the music is easier through iTunes - 7digital sometimes have good deals but you usually have to unzip the file(s) that get purchased / downloaded.

I always point people towards this infographic when people talk about the split between band/record company/distributor: http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/how-much-do-music-artists-earn-online/

It illustrates how many downloads or sales a musician would need before they could earn the US minumum wage with their royalties. The online stores such as iTunes, Spotify, and Last FM are near the bottom of the list, the worst being spotify with over 4 million plays needed in one month before their wage would be above the legal minumum.

dont think there is a need to do an iTunes vs 7digtial comparsion.

Best to have your music on as many chanels as possible when it comes to selling it. People will only search once for you're music and if its not there they wont buy it. and you've lost that chance for a purchase
