Just wondering what the best way to go about it is - go for the package deal or try to book everything myself? Any recommendations/places to avoid would be appreciated.

You can do the southern maldives for way cheaper and its far less crowded.

One week on a budget board in the menwats was about the same as a week on a top of the range boat in the maldives

Ill be in Indonesia for couple of months this summer and Im going to try and get out to the Mentawais. There are a good few land camps now but you are talking up to 2000 euro for 10 days. I was emailing a guy from a camp called Pitstop Hill on Nyang Nyang. He seems real sound, hes a young enough guy from West Oz who set the camp up there a few years ago. Their setup looks the best of what Ive seen online.

Overland seems to be getting more popular and you can homestay at katiet village beside Lances right, and on Nyang-Nyang. But chances are it the winds arent right for the breaks near you, you wont be able to get a boat to the breaks that are offshore. Overland sounds hardcore enough with loads of ferry delays, ****ty boats between the islands, and stories of bringing and cooking your own food, it could be exagerated though. Id say overland it'd be handy to have some basic Indonesian.

Any info from people that have been to the Mentawais and any tips espacially for overland, would be real helpful.

    Thanks
