Upgrading my hard drive - question...

Im looking to upgrade my hard drive as it has begun to make clicking noises from time to time and sometimes it wont boot into the HDD without a few 'gentle' knocks on the laptop case to get it going :). The HDD is likely to be on its way out.

My question is regarding ghosting my current hard drive to a new one. I know what to do on the software side, its just getting the data to the new drive that im not sure on. Ive come across 2 methods as far as I can see:

    1. SATA to USB transfer kit
    http://amzn.to/dWQMnw

    2. SATA to USB external enclosure
    http://amzn.to/gJ8Cgl

Will the external enclosure work just the same as the transfer kit? The enclosure could also be used for the old drive after the transfer so it makes much more sense?

Am I right in thinking the enclosure would be better?

    Thanks!

What you could do is use clonezilla to clone your hard drive to a usb hard drive. Put in your new hard drive and load image.

I'm more of a fan of a back up and reinstall though.

I prefer Acronis True Image Home 2011 and if Your old hard drive can make it :) just clone the partitions on new hard drive. You can choose between:
    Automatic and Manual.
In Manual mode You have to choose Move Method:
    -As is
    -Proportional
    -Manual

Will the free trial do it?

Acronis is a trial version http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/ , but some of programs to clone hard drive are free:
    - http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

    and many more :)

Thanks for the suggestions. Clonezilla seems easy to use from looking at their site. I can then either image my current hdd, install the new one and use clonezilla to copy the image over. Or if I get an enclosure I could clone the drive directly from old to new. Is that right? Is clonezilla good/reliable to use?

I don't use Clonezilla so can't tell You if it's easy program. Yes You can clone drive directly from old one on new one when You get enclosure of course.

    Good luck

I use it and find it easy enough. Is the old hard drive smaller then the new one?

Just an update, I got the hard drive installed and cloned fine. Ended using both Acronis and Clonezilla (thought there was a problem with the clone, but it was just a problem with the MBR. Fixed that using a W7 recovery disc). Very simple and painless in the end.

    Thanks for the help guys!
