Fixer upper, but the price is ridiculous.

But a secret flat in the barn? There's something like that down the road from me. It's supposed to be a garage on a site with planning permission but it's a secret home with a garage door. I suppose they didn't have the money to build a home according to planning

This place just needs "some gentle updating and would make an ideal renovation project for the D.I.Y. enthusiast."

Nothing wrong with that. A lot of people are looking for fixer-uppers.

Is there any standard in Irish renting? Like apart from requiring heating, a washing machine or something basic but like is there any actual standards by law at all?!

Just the standard of what's available to rent in the UK seems to be leagues better than the sh*t in Ireland. Serious question...

The black mold on that ceiling looks in need of a bit of gentle updating alright! Big potential so close to the town though I suppose.

Wonder what the story is with that place in Athlone, bankrupt builder owner probably, been posted in this thread a good few times with no sign of a sale anyway. Also a lot of that land down around Golden Island tends to be underwater during bad weather events even though its right beside the Shannon..

Have seen this one come up here before...

Someone confirmed it is in the flood plain, and even the travellers gave up trying to live in it...

Might depend on where you are looking in the UK. I have seen ad for place in the UK that would be illegal here, e.g. toilet opening directly into kitchen. Legal requirement here is at least two door between lavatory and kitchen. Plenty of example here of course of place that don't meet various legal requirements.
Things like no draining board, no self contained bathroom. Two kitchen hobs with 1 working, 4 working hobs are part of the minimum standard. The likes of ptrb.ie, the private landlord registry, or housing charities such as threshold should have links to minimum legal standards.

In and around London to be fair. But I'm not even talking about the legal min standards. I'm talking about quality of finish. Like in Dublin you're more likely to see a bathroom painted yellow, wc, a basin, and shower just lobbed in, exposed piping, bits of cheap mdf to make a counter, whereas over, you'll get nice tile finishes, modern decor, heated towel rails etc.

Living rooms same. Dublins, sh*tty bog standard furniture from the 70's. A small box tele, a half broken "coffee" table and bobs your uncle we'll charge top dollar. Whereas over you're more likely to see a widescreen 40" tv min. Nice floor finish, nice modern furniture etc. and this isn't the expensive places, these are houseshares, flats that the average worker even students could afford.

Just struck me when I was viewing another mid range price for houseshare, outside london, it had an outdoor swimming pool  for the same price in dublin you'll get a pool of water seeping through the ceiling most likely.

I am not sure I agree that this is unique to Dublin. I would know Dublin better than London, but I have seen plenty of example in London of outrageous prices for dumps. On the higher end of the market, I have seen ads for lovely places in Dublin not rented any of them mind.
I do think apartment in Ireland are seriously lacking in facilities however. I think the studios/flat end of the market are likely equally crap.

"Gentle updating"? You'd need to gravel a whole new driveway!

Maybe he is afraid of catching "the gay". Someone should tell him it can't be can't caught. More seriously maybe he thinks the way into a woman's pants is to share a room with her.

€800 a month for this barely-legal studio apartment...I can't believe they managed to take 28 photos of a box. Makes me sad :(

Lets not forget the price drop of €60 per week, or €260 per month. Imagine paying €1050 for the place never mind. Any house share would have to be better than paying a grand for a studio.

So in order to use the bathroom you have to drag the (crying?) chair out of the way.

Suppose it'd up your daily exercise in the absence of room to swing a cat......

Whatever about the state of the place before you rent it, leaving it like this is criminal.

Vile. There was a similar case in Passage West about 3 years ago. Wonder if it was the same "people"?

And they had kids? Social services should be involved here.

Landlord and friends cleaned it themselves.
Brave but i wouldn't rent it before they have professionals in to do a job there.

I saw it mentioned in the comments that on the radio earlier on it said the HSE were now involved.

You'd think the landlord could have stretched to buying castors for the tv stand or even bought a cheap rug rather than slapping down a corner of carpet there. It's seems like an otherwise lovely house.
