    Hi folks,

I need some advice. How in the name of God can i get to Goleen in county cork on public transport???? I live in Galway (user name a bit of a give away :D) Bus Eireann don't have a great service. We are starting the Mizen to Malin cycle the next day and i don't want to be wrecked from a long bus journey.

    Thanks
    Galwaybiker

you might get more info over on the commuting thread

apart from a few options between galway and cork i'd say you're basically relying on bus eireann from cork to goleen.

It's over a 5 hour drive according to the AA so getting there with Bus Eireann in 7 hours 20 isn't bad for such an out of the way place.

Bus Éireann, unless one of you can drive down. No idea how many services a day there are- you can't seem to see that without buying a ticket from Cork-Goleen. Goleen is really a tiny little village, much smaller than Schull, I'm surprised Bus Éireann go there at all!

The Bus Eireann timetable for Cork-Goleen is here:

It is a bit of a hike on public transport alright - if I absolutely had to do it I'd consider breaking up the journey with lunch or something in Cork. Getting someone to drive is a better option IMO if it's at all feasible for you - Goleen is in a really lovely area but as mentioned upthread it is also backarse of nowhere territory.

The road from the outskirts of Cork city is the N71, a national secondary route. For a short stretch it has dual carriageway in both directions.
    Towns along the way are:
Bandon: known as the Gateway to West Cork.
Clonakilty: many pubs double as music venues, the beach centre of West Cork.
Skibbereen: St. Fachtna's Cathedral; famine exhibition in heritage centre.
    Schull: lovely sheltered harbour.

Thus going by bus, you'll have an unguided tour of part of West Cork.

Someone asked why this bus ends at Goleen and not Schull. Many people have short breaks at the Mizen Peninsula, thus Goleen is convenient for these people. It has happened on a Sunday in summer that in Goleen all bus seats are occupied on the return route Goleen - Skibbereeen.
