Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was passing Cash Converters on Marys St (just off Eglinton St) Galway today and spotted a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 for €259 in the window, I wasn't stopping and it wasn't immediatley obvious what mount it was but it looked grand from the outside! Anyway, just thought I'd pass it on, if I get a chance I'll update!

wrong on both counts there

I've seen it in Sam Mc Cauleys chemists for €340

And it distorts terribly, I've seen it first hand with a friends.

Can't really agree there. First of all the price is more like 500 blips new - typically these go for 350 secondhand. Also, yes it does distort between 10 and 13 mm but for landscape purposes it suits very well.

Just because you saw a comment on flickr where someone else rubbished the lens doesn't mean you have to do the same.

It was 340 new in Mc Cauleys.

And it has nothing to do with the comment, As I said my friend has it so I've experienced it first hand. Way to make an assumption.

    Just my 2c.

I presume that shot was taken at the wider end of things, but a 10mm focal length with a cropped sensor is going to distort, period. Its still a great lens - just do a Flickr search for it - and the cheapest its going for on fleabay is €377. I guess that Pharmacist might have made a mistake when pricing it, or is just offering great value. I paid almost five hundred sheets for mine.

Oh yes it just a horrid lens it will barely take a decent photo.
Like these two I took with a borrowed Sigma 10-20 on my D90:

Excellent wide angle and a reasonable price. Yeah technically the branded versions may be better but you pay more for them.

Wish I'd never bought it, the distortion is the first thing that i notice in this picture every time I see it. Pity, I kinda like the picture otherwise.

    Stupid distortion....

Ooooh, this is a bit of a hidden gem for great images! Some great shots lads.

I clicked the Flickr link too out of curiosity, I do not own this lens [though was tempted by one on adverts a while back]. That is some mental dis[figurement]tortion alright, on the skater. But the images in this thread more than prove it a nice piece of glass.

It's a good enough piece of glass, but after borrowing one from Buzz, I think I would be more prone to buy the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. It has excellent reviews and I never had occasion where I needed to use the Sigma at 10mm.

Surely distortion is just the nature of the beast if you are too close to the subject and at the wrong angle ?

Lovely and powerful image there dakar.

I have to say I think this is an annoying and unhelpful post. Here's why:

    - No mention as to why the lens is 'horrible'. If that is your personal opinion, that is fine, say its your opinion, you are entitled to it. But if you come out with a definitive statement like this, you really ought to be able to back it up with solid personal experience. Otherwise it doesnt help others.

    - and then the statement 'it goes for a little more than that new anyway afaik' - You DO NOT know. This is a misleading & inaccurate statement. And you did not even attempt to check. I have just checked online at Conns & Berminghams, & 1 retailer has it at eu499 & the other at eu549.

    - Finally, it turns out you do not have one of these lenses yourself ( This is rational, if you don't like it you shouldn't buy it ) but are basing your strongly worded opinion on the experience of a friend of yours?

How does your post help anybody here?

    Regards, FoxT

PS - I own one of these lenses myself & am quite happy with it. ( Though, I would of course, prefer a f/1.4 version...) I am also very happy with the service I have received from the sigma folks in Bandon, & in general would recommend sigma as a good brand of lens. I am not connected with Sigma in any way, just speaking from my own experience with them over the past 3 years or so.

I have never used the tokina, but would love to have the constant f/2.8 throughout the zoom range.

Longshanks, savage distortion entirely in pic #2, go to the back of the class, please.

Dakar, the WB in your photo is a bit off...

    meh, I think I'll just sell it..:D

^ bloody hell Keith, you must have been in the water to get that close to the swans with that lens!

Oh, so it's the old 'how close can you get to swans at 10mm' game again , is it?

Perhaps he has a swan outfit. The black ones have really come into vogue recently.

I hate the distortion on this lens.... I just had to post more horrible examples:
I purposely left them uncorrected so you could see how it looks...

The first one there is a bit distorted, the building on the far left looks a bit odd, but that second shot is gorgeous. Worthy of a very large print.

  • Registered Users Posts: 749 ✭✭✭BlastedGlute

I took a look at that one in cash converters. Whoever sold it in there had dunked it at the beach most likely. There was still wet sand in the zooming part of the barrel and this would definitely be inside by now. It was in terrible condition and the person who sold it knew what they were at by selling it to a shop that didnt know what to look for. Avoid it!

Are you saying his argument is... distorted? (I'll get my coat)

The Tokina 11-16/2.8 is fantastic. I had the good fortune to use one late last year. Sharp as a tack. I had a hankering for a 10-20 before using the Tokina, but this overtook it's position in my wanted list.
They're hard to get though. When I enquired with Conns, they had a waiting list for the Nikon mount.

Had a loan of one of these at the weekend and I have to say I loved the distortion. If only I lived in Galway i might just go for it.

had a bity of trouble lighting the red awning overhead - it needed 2 off camera flash pops & the flash barely recharged after 1 sec, finally managed it...

There is certainly a distortion in the lens but I love it. Plenty of examples of distortion in the following images.
You wouldn't really notice it with landscapes but you would with buildings and people. I think it adds to the buildings though.

Is that first shot Carlow Courthouse?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭mehfesto

    Genuine question here.

I'm doing a documentary thesis at the moment, and a lot of the people I'm shooting will be in cramped, small places (bedrooms, toilets, etc). I've been thinking about investing in this lens for the reason that I'd get more into the frame, but would the distortion in smaller areas - i.e. not landscapes, be VERY noticeable?

    Cheers

Should be fine, just keep any head shots away from edge of frame.

Generally it is not a good portrait lens. Distortion can get you some interesting results though.

Ha! that confirms the story I heard in history. Apparently the Carlow Courthouse plans got mixed up with the ones from Cork and Carlow got a much bigger one than meant. They're identical.

    Way to avoid distortion:

I love this lens. It's just most times I use it I wind up freezing. And before anyone bothers asking I was standing in 3 feet of water taking that one last September.
