Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Web design programme

I am considering doing a web authoring course and would really appreciate some advice on which programme is best.

I used Dreamweaver briefly during an MA in Journalism and found it good but the course I am looking at doing is using a programme called Web Expressions 2.

Can anyone advise on which is best or is there any real difference?

Expression is free I think and Dreamweaver is not.

For a BA in Journalism, I would imagine you would not be concentrating too much on the intricacies of cross-browser compatible HTML etc. No harm in knowing how to use two different applications for the same purpose. Dreamweaver would be a better choice for you as I would imagine you are using the likes of Photoshop, Flash, Premiere and possibly other Adobe products. Dreamweaver would have better support for these as they are all Adobe products.

speaking from experience here, you're much better of using a decent text editor.

dreamweaver and other 'what you see is what you get' programs encourage lazy markup and very rarely produce clean compliant code.

I was gonna say the same thing. Never been a fan of the WYSIWYG programs.. I like knowing that if there is an issue with the pages then it's my code and I know how to handle it..

also, when using PHP/MySQL, it's handy to have the HTML pages laid out neatly yourself, as opposed to having to work your way through the thousand pages that the web design programs give you..

'What You See is What You Might Get (If You're Lucky)' has always seemed more apt to me. Always hated Dreamweavers rendering and the overhead needed to iron out the associated issues. Only use it for production as opposed to design and not for a while at that.
