Woah you back-edited your post after I'd replied to it

I thought the Hendo/Shields fight wasn't particulalry memorable (apart from what happened afterwards), all I remember of the Miller fight is that Miller had a good guillotine in but the round ended. Then he came out tired for the last two rounds and Shields sat on top of him until the bell.

I don't see how you didn't think this fight was memorable? I've never seen a fighter come back from being so badly rocked, especially against a heavier, stronger, more experienced guy. Also you clearly need to rewatch the Daley fight. I expect Georges to try keep this one standing and if the recent performances of other Ceaser Gracie members are anything to go by Jake won't have an issue with this. You could have to eat your words about this being a boring fight on May 1st.

Great fight. Somehow I think GSP wins this bout. I think he will be able to keep the fight on the feet and prevent it from hitting the ground.

Well not trying to put a damper on it for the Shields fans but PaddyPower doesn't seem to think he has much of a chance judging by the odds on the fight -

    Georges St-Pierre v Jake Shields 1/6 7/2

He's been fighting the best of the best, every single contender to his belt, he's demolished them all. Do you think it'd be better if he was fighting lower level guys and KOing them into oblivion?

It's like when Baca play Madrid. They won 5-0 a few months ago, but nobody expects them to demolish Madrid 5-0 every time they go out there!

I think GSP is being unfairly judged by a lot of people who just like to hate on fighters. He dominates everyone he comes across! If he was knocking everyone out then i'm sure there'd be people saying "Ah but when was the last time he submitted someone?"

    Dan Hardy?
I think itd be better if he actually looked for a finish.I recognise he is that good and could finish them if he actually tried. Instead he seems content to ride out a decision.
Demolished wouldnt be the word id use to describe his defences. Suffocated would be more apt (or jabbed).

You picked one guy he's fought in all of his defences. Fact of the matter is, there isn't ONE top WW in the division that he hasn't beaten! Fitch, Koscheck, Alves, Hardy, Serra, Penn, Sherk........ all these guys were Champions or No.1 contenders when GSP got his hands on them. He's beaten them all and convincingly! Shields has come in now and I think he'll beat him too.

You don;t think he demolished Josh Koscheck?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,054 ✭✭✭✭Professey Chin

No I think he jabbed Koscheck. If he actually followed up the jabs then it might lean towards demolish.
Hes miles better then Kos on his feet, knew Kos had no depth perception and timing after a couple of rounds with that eye and still wouldnt go on a proper offensive

(Sorry, I edited my post while you were replying).

So you can't demolish a guy with a jab? Of course you can! He systematically beat Koscheck down. Koscheck was NEVER in the fight!

GSP is by MILES the best WW in the world, but people still think they should pick holes in him. Ridiculous IMO!

Im not saying hes not the best WW in the world.Im not saying he didnt dominate all his opponents.
I just want a simple answer. Why doesnt he go for a finish?
Pretty much every other world class fighter(with the exception of fitch) has finished world class opponents, a lot of them on a higher relative class then GSPs opponents. They go for the finish and they get it. We all know GSP has the ability to finish fighters and we've seen it. We've seen him be aggressive even with his current style like in the 2nd Serra fight. Why doesnt he fight like that anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,258 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Well he finished Hughes, Penn, attempted to finish Hardy, almost finished Fitch if my memory serves me correctly........

Koscheck has a lot of power. If I was controlling a fight from start to finish and my opponent's only hope of victory was that I step in to finish and he catches me on the chin............ I think i'd be smart about it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭seadnamac

What are you on about? He tried very, very hard to finish Hardy, getting him in a number of different submissions, including a kimora that looked like it was going to snap Hardy's arm off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Xlami

I know this is a great card but I feel the undercard isn't great compared to others this year. I hope the Ninja Roberts fight gets put on facebook. He's the diamond in the rough at Ceaser Gracie.

If Freddy Roach told me the best way to counter a guy with boxing was to double jab. then i'm gonna go out there and double jab.

They work perfect. I've noticed a few times when you put it on it takes 30 seconds or so to reach the best quality, the first 30 seconds are like one of those really awful streams, but after that it's perfect, I connect my laptop to the TV for it.

Cheers, must test on my ps3 to see if the browser on it supports that video, otherwise i'll connect to tv.

Diaz vs MacDonald and Pierson vs Ellenberger are on ESPN at 1, there are 5 fights before that on Facebook though, not sure when they start, probably around 11 GMT?

Edit: Rogers Centre site says first fight is 6pm Canada Time so first fight should be 11 for us.

Can't pick between Matyushenko and Brilz for my accumulator. So far I have Shields, Aldo, Machida, McDonald. Might change Machida to Couture depending on the odds

I'd stick to 4 you have man, maty and brilz is too risky. May I ask what odds you are getting with that accum?

    13/1 .

Not bad, i myself won't be betting on the Machida match because of how you can never count out Randy and I think Diaz will beat McDonald but they both are 5/6

I'd be backing Shields though at 7/2. He's also a massive 9/1 for a win by Submission and 20/1 for KO....

It really is, for me this isn't a fight i will be disappointed by regardless of the outcome. I would love a shake but and i really like Shields AJJ style. Where if GSP loses we will see a monster in his next fight assuming he comes back the right way.

OR we could see another fantastic side to GSP as he destroys Jake Shields this weekend. Not to mention the atmosphere there is going to be off the chart. 55,000 people screaming for GSP is going to be surreal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

Thats a good price for me if Shields wins its most likely buy Sub however I think GSP has the edge to win. Doesn't mean i don't stick a fiver on it :)

As long as it goes at least 3 rounds and its exciting I don't care who wins to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,924 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Exactly what I think, only way Shields wins this is by sub. If it goes 5 rounds, GSP will just completely wear him down and win on points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,476 ✭✭✭✭Ush1

I reckon from the criticism and the way he's been talking, GSP will be gunning for a finish big time. Probably not a sub but ya never know!

Hendo went for the finish in the first round against Shields but he survived. People don't realise how resilient Shields is. GSP won't be able to finish Shields if Hendo's Overhand From Hell didn't. (it was close enough though)

Just because Hendo didn't finish him in 1 doesn't mean GSP has no chance of finishing him. There is so much in MMA that comes down to chance and timing, nothing more so than knockouts.
Hendo might of finished him half the time, but now people talk about a glass jaw and hope he might get knocked out

    UFC 129
not all fights cover here, but a decent run down of my thoughts

    Predictions:

Lightweight bout: Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson
Henderson coming off a lose against Pettis (the former WEC lightweight champ who lost his belt on the merger). But brought us that WTF moment when he ran up and jumped off the cage to deliver a head kick. Bocek had a recent lose to Jim Miller, but gave the younger of the UFC Siblings his toughest bout yet. It's very close, Bocek is a BJJ blackbelt, with a Blackbelt in Karate, Henderson is a BJJ brown belt with a blackbelt in TKD. It's clsoe but I think this one stays standing and Henderson's striking is best.
    Henderson by decision

Light Heavyweight bout: Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida
Looking forward to this one the most. Randy is a hero. Lyoto went from being my favourite fighter to one of my most disliked. He initially was excellant, elusive, great strikes and never got hit. Then he won the belt and he became boring. Shogun ripped him apart and he was never the same. He is on a 2 (well really 3) fight losing streak and needs to win this to stay near the top of the division (or even in the UFC). For Randy, he has nothing to win or lose and he'll still leave it all out there.
Randy fights best as a dirty boxer. Clinch, and control against the cage. A polar opposite to the pounce, strike, evade tactics of "The Dragon". Machida has shown he can hold his own agaisnt powerful fighters like Rampage and I expect him to take the win here. I can't see him leaving it in the hands of the Judges seeing as his two most recent decisions (Shogun & Rampage) were questioned by more than a few people.
Machida by TKO in the 3rd

Featherweight Championship bout: José Aldo (c) vs. Mark Hominick
Jose Aldo finally makes his UFC debut. The UFC worlds is about to see what the MMA world has known for a long time. Aldo is top 3 pound for pound in the world. Unbelievably fast. Unreal striking. And, similar to Anderson Silva, a BJJ black belt that rarely chooses to use these skills. He crippled Faber with leg kicks. I except him to do the same to Hominick, who has left them unchecked before. Follow up with a big head kick, or flying knee to drop him, finishing it on the ground.
Aldo by TKO in the 2nd or 3rd

Welterweight Championship bout: Georges St-Pierre (c) vs. Jake Shields
Jake Shields has a much better chance of winning than the odds suggest. He has unreal BJJ. Or rather American JJ as he refers to it as. GSP is also a black belt, but this is a situation where not all black belts are equal. Their wrestling is probably near equal - Shields is better at dominating on the ground. George has better takedown defence. However, GSP is better everywhere else, faster and definitely has better cardio/stamina.
It terms of striking, GSP is clinical. His double jab ripped Koschek apart. And is well able to throw a head kick. Shields is clunky on his feet, not really looking comfortable striking. He throws look kicks at will, due to a lack of fear of being put on his back.
If shields wants to win, he needs a sub in the first two rounds imo.
I expect GSP to push the pace early, but keep his distance and importantly, keep it standing.
Weighing up everything. I expect GSP to win by 4th or 5th round TKO or decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,939 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

i think hominick will do well to make it past the 1st round
aldo by ko/tko 8/11 looks a very big price for this one

I fancy henderson but i'm torn between sub or points

i've a sneaking feeling randy might hold out for 3 rounds
    but lose by ud
a couple of years ago id be putting the house on machida
for a knockout but im not so sure these days with machida.
He should really be putting couture away though
i think if randy makes it past the first two rounds i think
machida probably won't have to do much in the third
    to get a unanimous dec
    machida by ud

    gsp/shields
nothing but a very comfortable points win for gsp

one other fight im really looking forward to is diaz v mac donald
this is my idea for fotn and im hoping this one stays standing

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭fakearms123

Hey I'm thinking about putting down a tenner on Jake Shields winning by submission on Paddy Power because he's at a 9/1 for submitted GSP, its a long shot but I could win €90. And I was thinking of putting down a tenner on Randy beating Lyoto by decision with is a 9/2. What do you think? Is it a waste of money?
