Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Non-Alcoholic Beers.

    Hey there.

I'm just wondering if anybody is aware of any non-alcoholic beers which have a notably good flavour. Some days I would love a good beer, but would rather not deal with the alcohol.
Since it might be somewhat relevant, my preferred beers are Chimay Grande Reserve and Innis & Gunn.
It would be absolutely delightful if there were a non-alcoholic beer of similar quality, if not of similar style.

For something dark, flavoursome and beer-like you're best off with "malta" from the African shops. There are a few brands, including a Guinness one:

Weihenstephaner and some of the other Germans do nice non-alcoholic Weiss Beer. Much nicer than than the Erdinger one which is much more common (has that faint weird artificial sweet taste that you get from some non-alcoholics). Only ever seen in Mchughs in Dublin though.

Although I'd take the Erdinger and Paulaner non-alcoholics over most lager non-alcoholic beers if I was driving.

I found the Maissels Weisse non-alco pretty good and the Cobra one a's well, even though I think that's actual 0.5%, in which case you could just try BrewDog's "Nanny State" beer.

I completely forgot about Nanny State.

I'll have to go and have a taste sometime.

As far as I know, Nanny State is brewed exclusively for the Swedish market these days.

It has a theoretical IBU (international bittering units) of 225, a proper German pilsner has around 30, you get the idea of how bitter it could be ;)

Budvar Non Alcoholic is now available in Limerick, Clare, Galway, Mayo and Sligo to my knowledge. Could be available in other places but I'd have to check.

    Patience.

Pssstttt I'm going to collect a case of Krombacher Dark on Friday. Apparently a Pallet has been brought in to "test the market". I shall let you know. Tasted it in Germany a few weeks back but as I was fairly plastered my report holds little confidence.

    All is not lost!!

Does anybody know of any Bars in Galway that stock it? Would love to try it and if it is any good I can treat the other half to a night out while driving.
Any heads up would be appreciated. Cheers

& many more but those are my suggestions for a good night.

I'm just in the door myself from Galway City and have 1 bottle of Non Alco in the fridge. Burgers are under the grille. Nyom Nyom. Might crack open the lonely looking bottle of Budvar as well. Sur' ah may is well

Most brew dog stuff I've tried seems to go that direction. Which is ok with me in small doses.

I prefer them to becks or cobra non-alcoholic but I'm not a fan of weiss beer so they aren't my ideal non-alcoholic beer.

Clausthaler seems very hard to locate these days. It never lasts long in my local Offie as I usually buy both 4 packs if they have it in.

Budvar Non Alcoholic is now making it way around the country. Most of those mentioned on the above list will have it.

It's in a 330ml bottle as well. I haven't tried it myself. I'm heading to Galway tomorrow so will have to try one when I get there for Lunch.

Schneider weiss alko free is the best by a bit.

If that isnt available, my trick is to get a lager alko free and just add lemonade to turn it into a shandy.
Actually is very drinkable, and not all so different from a real shandy.

theres a becks green lemon alko free, but its damn hard to get in germany, so i would presume impossible to get in Ireland.

Watch this space. There could be a Krombacher Radler coming in which is basically a Pils with Lemonade but Alcohol free.

Only in German but you can use Google Translate to decipher it.

    "Shandy", in English ;)

I'd echo Emperor Tomato Ketchup - thought Clausthaler was the best of the bunch, and a whole lot cheaper when it was available in Aldi (€2.49 for 4x330ml). It's looking like they've stopped carrying it though, much to my disgust - has anybody got a good, cheap alternative suggestion?! My principles prevent me paying as much for non-alcoholic as alcholic beer, and it's affecting my liver's health!!

    one step ahead of you.

Have 2 6-packs of them at home (in Munich)!

Theres another brand of alcohol free shandy (claustaler i think) but the (pregnant) mrs swears by the Krombacher.

On the topic, theres a mixed drink called becks green lemon which is a pre-mixed shandy too, and is lovley.
The regular one is 2.5% but theres also a very very hard to get alcohol free version.
I've seen the 2.5% one up the north (South Armagh) in Super Values for 70 or 80p just in case anyone wants a lighter drink for home drinking
