With the temperature drop and general weather deterioration I'm officially back to my early spring moth numbers. Just two moths in the trap this morning.
1x lesser BB yellow underwing
1 x bright line brown eye*

*I assumed brght line brown eye but now I'm wondering is it a bit late Maybe something else? Didn't take a pic.

Got our first Copper Underwing of the year last night, despite the rain. Having serious problems with a greedy Robin grabbing moths. It comes right in while I'm sorting the catch and grabs them out of the egg trays:mad:

Had a big catch. Very mild with min of 15C.
Highlight is a Convolvulus Hawk-moth
It's huge :eek:

I got my timing wrong with getting out to trap and robin(s) had cleaned up the sheet. I needed to be about 10 minutes earlier

Wow, that is one stunning Hawk-moth!

Didn't feel too great last night so the trap is going out tonight instead though the temperature is forecast to be quite a bit cooler - might be lucky though and fingers crossed for something nice

It felt really cold last night!
Not surprising there wasn't much flying, singles of most but 9 Pink-barred Sallows. The Engrailed was a surprise as I haven't seen one for weeks and it didn't look very worn.

Would you check that these are not Square-spot Rustic. Perhaps check hindwings.
I noticed Least Yellow Underwing on your previous list and am surprised by lack of Square-spot Rustic. It is past peak season of Least Yellow Underwing.

They were fairly well worn and I dont take pics of the ones I think I know so im afraid it too late to check now.

Check them the next time you trap if you get another Least Yellow Underwing

I'm about 20 miles inland from thebishop and recorded 5 Least Yellow Underwing's on Sept 1st, one of them below. Also had an Engrailed/Small Engrailed on Sept 3rd which seems to be about a fortnight later than the previous 'latest' on the MothsIreland map.

I suspect there will be more "late" reports after the coldest summer for 25-49 years.

It certainly isn't late for Least Yellow Underwing, it was the lack of Square-spot Rustics in bishop's list that I'm curious about and was trying to find a reason.

but I'm sitting at a desk in Wicklow and the reason may be entirely a environmental one and not recorder error and I'll accept that its ridiculous to judge from where I'm sitting

A lovely summers day and nothing at all of insect life on stephens green. I rarely see a butterfly or bee or anything else.I remember the meadows ALIVE with insects in the 1950s.

My Dad did some moth trapping back in the 50's. He was shocked when he saw how low modern catches are in comparison. Insect life has been decimated by modern pesticides and habitat loss:mad:

First I had this down as a Least Yellow Underwing, then due to the discussion on the previous page I thought it must be Square Spot Rustic... except it had a definite yellow/ orange underwing so I'm none the wiser :pac:

I'll stick my neck out and ID the first as a lesser broad bordered yellow underwing. Don't recognize the 2nd, it looks interesting.

Half-cocked is right with his ID of Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing for the first and the second is a Rosy Rustic

I think we've just demonstrated the variability of moths, with a Rosy rustic that isn't 'rosy' and LB in your defence the LBBYU is slightly different to norm.
