It's gone really slow - barely functional - except for google-based sites (not bing or yahoo), ul sites etc., which respond promptly.

Anyone else using it experiencing the same thing?

Do they throttle it [more] if there is excess use? If so, do they do this by apartment rather than by room?

Sorry don't live in Brookfield but I would seriously doubt they are monitoring everyone individually like that or have invested the tech to detect it.

If there is throttling it will be across the entire Brookfield campus. Throttling is only a means to prevent you from hogging the bandwidth on your downloads and wouldn't / shouldn't be affecting general-use browsing on the internet.

Obviously if someone else living in Brookfield posts describing their current internet speed of operations that would be the best comparison.

Although also bear in mind these things can often be just temporary lulls and will be back at full operations soon enough (unless the management are lazy as fúck).

Few weeks back, here in Groody, we lost internet access for the best part of a day but just stuck it out and we eventually were back up and running.

Thanks for the reply. I dont think it would be difficult or costly to measure individual use, or use by apartment.

It's strange because google and ul sites work fine. To me this suggests that there is an intentional restriction, rather than a technical problem.

Also this started happening after midnight on a Saturday night. This makes me think it is automatic.

I haven't been using it excessively myself, in any case

What have they to gain from restricting your internet browsing?

Also your description suggests a specific website restrictions or 'access to certain websites only' as opposed to general throttling. Again I doubt there doing that either. I just can't see it as its a recipe for 'pissing students off!'

Patience might well be the cure...

They might prevent too much bandwidth being used by specific apartments.

Yes it is a recipe for that. I am pissed off.

I agree it's not a logical thing for them to restrict access to sites. However I can't see any other explanation which fits the facts. Google and UL stuff is really fast. Anything else has been much slower than dialup at best, and usually won't load at all.

They actually monitor every single connection and everyone is given a login & password. They can throttle any user at any time if they wish, but it is automated at the moment to give everyone equal share.

I generally notice the internet getting slow or disconnecting, always around the 12:00am mark. Could be some maintenance or a server rebooting, but it is quite annoying.

Also during that "downtime" all irish based sites were working (UL.ie, boards.ie, google.ie etc), so i hazard a guess and say there was some DNS issue.

Workiing normally again now, so you're probably right.
Good to be aware that they are monitoring individual connections: I'll restrict my porn-viewing to the less demented kinds :)

I think I put my view across inaccurately. What I meant was they weren't watching pwd's traffic and saying to themselves, "lets put some extra restrictions on this guy". I have no doubt they have logs of everyone's traffic but they're not analyzing it day to day. Rather if for some specific reason they needed to prove / disprove something then they can.

The very fact there is a campus wide throttling in place means you can do as much as you want because you won't be able use more bandwidth than the limit allows.

So you can be a porn fanatic and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to them. :pac:

Might be detrimental to the health of your notebook but thats another matter.

Glad to hear your access is back to normal sham! :)

If someone is heavily downloading (torrents etc.)
It can cripple the speed for the whole block.

It was like that back in 2008 anyway
