Just posted my entry a few minutes ago - with the clenched fingers clutching the cheque over the postbox for a few seconds :o

Posted a cheque off a couple of weeks back - should I have received some form of notification of acceptance by now? I'd hate to discover that it got lost in the post after entries have closed.

I won't be registering for the 2012 race, but for future reference is not really difficult to run such a distance on the same small loop?!! I would find that extremely mentally challenging!

It is much easier to orhanise a small race like this on a 5k loop. All the drinks/feed stations and the timing mats are automatically passed by 10 times.

Also the runners will generally run in packs.

I'm already entered this, however there are 6/7 of my running friends thinking about/ planning to run this.
    I've suggested they book soon.

AFAIK Places are genuinely limited, so anyone 'thinking' about doing this should book asap, or at least contact Ultraman1.

(or maybe I could buy a second entry & sell it for €100 in January;))

When did you open the entries for the 2012 Donadea UM? I am thinking about looking at this for 2013.

Kinda unusual to announce a national championship after the entries close??? Perfect race for it though. I presume entries will re open for the 50k again?

I thought it was known to be a national champs for a while, or maybe I'm wrong.

If there's a real contender for the national title who has not got an entry they can have mine, I will not be threatening the podium. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭Zuppy

An even better idea would be to add a 100km and we could then have the Irish 100km in the country for a change.

Any chance you could expand the event on such short notice? :-)

@ Jeff - first I heard of the championships was Ultramans post.

That counts as a while in my world!

Regardless of what it's status the way the weather is at the moment I reckon we might have problems with high temperatures and water shortages!

    My God, you're right Jeff

**Aimman heads to the kitchen for another slice of Christmas pud and clears his schedule for 2012** :D

Would I be right in saying that this is the first Ultra in Ireland to have pacers?

I've no idea but I can't see any potential winners being paced round so legality is not really relevant is it?

Oh, I agree, it's just that it's a national championships, so will determine 50k placings in Ireland (whether you come first or last). I'd rather make sure that nobody will be upset now, rather than finding out later. I remember reading something about this kind of thing before, and if I remember correctly, it was fine as long as you were being paced by people participating in the same event/distance.

DCM doubles as the national marathon championships and they have pacers in that race, I've heard. Yet it's still a perfectly valid national championship race. Why should the 50k work differently?

Sean Connolly had a pacer but he only lasted 4 miles

If you're thinking of the same issue re: Irish ultra running races that I'm thinking of, I think the issue was that the female winner was being paced over part of it by a male.

Traditiionally in Ultras(some of the ones in the USA anyway) you can be paced by people who are not participating in the race/your support crew. I'm not sure if gender of the pacer is actually a genuine issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭Zuppy

Usually in US races pacers are expressly forbidden to mule for runners.

Personally would like to see the first pacers slower than the expected winners. That way we see who has the mental strength as well.

Pacing has a long tradition in American ultras, but not in championship races.

    Except in Leadville, of course.

Probably a good idea. That way you'd avert any potential complaints.

re pacer issue, theres is a 4hr pacer and a 5hr back marker,i dont think any of the winners will be out of any of these groups
