I am looking to purchase my first shotgun, will be mainly used for vermin - magpies or grey crows and maybe a little clay shooting.

I can't see myself becoming a regular at either so probely just summer use.

Was thinking about spending about €500 max.

Any recommendations? I rang scullys in Athlone and they have new baikal shotguns for €480 as they have a sale on them.

    I am located in Connaught/midlands.

Hi, thanks for replying -They have but they seem to have 1 gun for clays and another for game and also have spent about €2000 per gun so over what I hoped to spend.

Go second-hand. You'll get a nice gun for less than that if you buy second hand and look around for a while. I'd contact Fingal Sports. I bought a lovely little AyA no. 4 side by side for considerably less than that. They might have soemthing else nice.

what i would suggest is to get yourself a sporter, if you have used any of theirs, there are some pretty good deals out there at the moment and you will pick up a second hand on in good condition for that money

The 12ga auto is the most versatile, all-around firearm.

    Perhaps: Rem 1100 or CZ712?

Could you stretch your budget to €750

I bought my Fist Semi almost new for that.

Yes maybe 2nd hand should be my route, I had not taught of an auto - I had my mind set on an under and over.

A semi Auto shotgun is my favourite game/clay gun.

If you were going Solo Clay gun most prefer O/U.

I like Semi's as the recoil is much milder as the spring dampens it.

I personally have a Remington Semi, but Browning, and Fabarm can be picked up second hand for teh price I mentioned.

My Shotty was €1450 new in 2006.
I'm not sure what it is worth now. I'd imagine at least a grand but mine was a higher spec Remington (105CTi)
A Remington 11-87 1100 Browning Gold/Fuzion or a Fabarm Semi would all be bought for around €750

You would get a nice O/U for teh same money.
Most important is you throw a few shotguns up to your shoulder in a gun shop to see what fits best.
I like Shotguns that have 2 beads to align as it is easier to be more accurate

For Hunting I'd recommend a Green or red bead. They are easier seen for ducks etc in low light

Id strongley advise you to stay away from new turkish over and unders liked Armed €550 new, this gun is double your budget but it would last you a lifetime. Berreta ultralight second hand for €1000 on irish gun trader.

you could pick up a decent second hand browning beretta for €750-800, I paid 800 for my 391 it was mint. €500 would get you a Beretta 303 vintage gun.

You dont say where you are but Ian Jameson in Mount Nugent Cavan has quite a few semis. By the way dont be scared of the Escort or the webley semis I know two lads that have them and they take serious hacking

    Try mcBride in Athlone
    Dave Mullivhill in ballymahon

And yes, stay away from the Turkish stuff.

I got a Reno side by side last year. Semi pistol stock and its VERY comfortable. Would recommend it as a starter gun as it was only €320 second hand with barrels that looked like mirrors :)

Going to visit a local gun dealer this weekend, what should I be looking for in a 2nd hand gun? Pitting in barrels ??

try shooting the thing if you can as its the most important thing at the end of the day. If you go to lakeland there dear but at least youl get to break a few clays with it first.;)
