Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Social housing

Just an enquiry on behalf of someone, any advice would be helpful. A person is accommodated in social housing for a number of years. Even though she has put a lot of work into doing up the accommodation, she no longer wishes to live there. The estate itself is in a poor state of repair and her children do not mix well with any of the children on the estate and feel excluded. She has spoken to the housing officer, but there is nothing else available and she feels she does not want to live in any of the alternative social housing accommodations that may become available. She has seen a private house available for rent which would suit her needs. Would she be allowed to leave her social housing accommodation and claim rent allowance to cover the high rent for this property? What are here rights?

can only speak for the area in which i live. she would definitely not get rent allowance. to get rent allowance you must be assessed as"in need of housing" by the local authority. if you voluntarily vacate a council house, they will not assess you as in need of housing, so no rent supplement. maybe after the appeal system has been flogged to death and local TDs have been involved but that could take an awful long time.

You usually will not qualify for rent supplement if you have vacated social housing.

Rent supplement is paid while a person/family is waiting for accommodation by local housing authority. In order to qualify for rent supplement you have to be deemed as having a housing need from local authority, as her housing need has already been met it is unlikely she will qualify for rent.

If exceptional circumstances exist, you may apply for rent supplement or contact your local CWO for some advice.
