The game was never supposed to be played from a third person perspective so the animator wouldn't have spent time crafting animations which never have been seen. The basic bobbing/walking/running you're seeing is all that's required to give the attached camera the sense of movement from the first person perspective.

case in point, this is what the rather fantastic Mirrors edge looks like in 3rd person.

here's the techland apology and patch notes for the US version taken from their site..
    http://deadisland.deepsilver.com/blog.php

This is ****ing hilarious. It's like its a mod for half life being released. By part-time hobby developers. In its beta.

The amount of bugs its been released with is ridiculous. Did they do this to beat the possible negitive reviews? I'll be back in 3 months once we get the finished version.

I'm playing the PC version and have yet to encounter a single bug. I may be just lucky though.

The initial release on PC was full of strange bugs. The console versions were fine.

The first update fixed all this anyways.
    • NoClipping enabled when you pressed Y
    • Repetitive zombies appearing when they shouldn't have. It still happens with the regular zombies but the tougher / important ones don't come back.
    • Makers all over the map showing you who can give you side quests
    • Beating zombies would result in the slow-mo waaaaay too often, was like you were fighting in The Matrix
    • No vehicle damage, you could drive your jeep around like a nut and it wouldn't break down
    • The user interface was a bit off and slow to respond

The above are what I came across and were since fixed. All other bugs were multiplayer related.

I see the defence for the thirdperson and how people wouldn't use it anyways but you look stupid when you see your own shadow running. Your one arm flailing about the place is funny :pac:

I don't really get why so many people hate the game completely. Sure, it's not the greatest game in the world, but it is fun to play. It has many issues that could have be sorted with better game design, but the mechanics work well enough.

It looks really pretty. The island is fantastic looking, and the models are pretty well done. They're not at the high end of the market that you find today, but they're fairly close. And the gore... my god, the gore. It's utterly insane when you look around you after fighting several zombies. Severed body parts, smashed open heads, lumps of unrecognisable meat and realistic looking slimey blood. It's brilliant!

I've heard complaints about the voice acting, but it's better than a lot of games and done really well in some places. The missions are an odd bunch. There's no difficulty level. Instead, when you're given a mission it tells you how difficult it is. But I've found some "Very Hard" missions easier than those labelled "Easy". Some of the missions are kind of stirring in a way. You'll find lots of people who've just given up and are curled up in a babbling ball. There's one mission near the start (that I'll spoiler. It's not going to ruin too much if you read it) where
you are asked by a dying husband to escort his wife to safety. If you go back to him afterwards you find he's turned into a zombie, which for me was a neat touch.

It is a bit odd having people ask you to go through a zombie infested island to fetch a necklace for them, but since you're given loads of missions, you usually find several can be completed at once. Plus you only actually have to do the story missions to proceed (but the others are good for XP).

I've also heard people complaining about the combat, but I've found it fairly intuitive. I don't know if it's that I've been lucky, or that I just don't ask for too much. :D I got a sickle in the game and there was just so much satisfaction of having a zombie come at you, kicking them back and then slicing their head off. Or coming up against the Thugs (who deal a load of damage and knock you back a few feet when they hit you) and cutting off their arms, and having them try and headbutt you. Or just using a hammer to crack open some skulls.

The fact that zombies respawn in areas you've been to is a negative for some, but for me it means I'm constantly ill at ease everywhere I go. The levelling monsters are bad in games like Oblivion where there's a variety or them and different types of locations that it makes sense to have different levels of monsters. But here, I don't mind it as it means every time you fight a zombie, you're fighting for your life. And as all those who are preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse know, you can't under-estimate a zombie!

I think the Rock Paper Shotgun impressions of the game sum it up really well, in particular the line where he describes the game as "This is Borderlands meets that game YOU love that everyone else feels falls short." It's not perfect, but it does have something that keeps you playing on.

It's hard to recommend whether or not anyone should go out and buy it. I have no regrets and am really enjoying it. It's not a terrible game, but it's not a great one. If you don't feel an urgent need to buy the game, then maybe wait until it's on sale somewhere.

    Nice write up Humanji.

I can tell before i even play it that im going to love this game, despite its flaws. Ive always wanted, ever since the first resi, a game where even a single zombie is a threat, rather than just cannon fodder. I like how this game keeps zombie numbers low, but each zombie is a challenge to kill.

And once (if) modders start modding this it will be incredible. Removing respawning items, make it more survival horror, etc. The possibilites are endless

    Great read humanji.
Just want to add something; it seems that anybody to come along with a new ip somehow deserves hardcore criticism. I'm glad some developers are trying to do things differently, its a change from seeing an old Ip with a 3 or a 4 at the end of it. Really looking forward to this tomorrow now, loved Borderlands and Fallout.

Anyone fancy coop btw (360)? Il stock up on beer and sit in for the night.

Why, what's the point in doing that? It seems pointless having a levelling up system for the player if everything levels up with you, it just might as well not be there, it makes no sense.

I kind of touched on this above where I said it suits this game that zombies are always the same threat. It's not like the zombies are a huge problem on their own, it's more like when they're in groups. If you could just run into a swarm of them, swing a few times and they'd all be dead (again) then it'd really kill the sense of danger. The levelling system in this is more so a guage of when you're ready to get another skill point, than a guage of how powerful you are.

If you think about it, the game is set over a couple of days. So it'd be weird if you suddenly became superhuman over that time, and what was a threat a few hours before is merely something you wipe off the bottom of your shoe.

I forgot to mention two other things. One Chairman Meow mentioned about respawning items. I think it would have been better if they didn't, so it'd be more of a struggle. But I can live with that. The second is that they shouldn't have bothered with the CGI trailer that so many complained the game is nothing like. They should have just put out the intro sequence. It's brilliant, especially the song "Hoodoo Your Voodoo, Bitch".

Now that isn't a fair accusation at all. It is hardly like Dead Island is a new idea despite the fact its open world - hell, there's an absolute ludicrous surplus of zombie games at the moment. It seems any publisher and developer who want a quick buck will turn to the old reliable of zombies. Originality is to be cherished, and it usually is rewarded (if not sales wise, at least critically and by a loyal fanbase). Crapping out a half-baked zombie game is far from original, alas. And Techland, after the much despised Call of Juraez the Cartel, don't seem like a developer who are immune from a cynical cash grab or two.

Dead Island sounds by many accounts derivative of other titles like Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising and various other titles including the word 'Dead' in the title. TBH "not bad, not great" isn't a ringing endorsement for me. Sure, I haven't played it, so take my ramblings with a pinch of salt. From reviews I've read, Dead Island seems like a somewhat cynical and poorly implemented title, and I'm glad its getting criticised by many if it is indeed a bit dodgy, new IP or not. It's saving me fifty euro anyway :)

In fairness, Dead Island was originally announced in 2006 and the synopsis given at the time sounds very much like the game they are releasing now so it's a bit unfair to criticise it for being a cynical cash grab. :)

I think the trailer kind of hurted the game , while i think no one would of thought the game would be better than the trailer i thought the game would be more emotion driven from what the trailer to me was made out to be but it seems they went for a more action frantic game which to some could be misleading , never the less im gonna be picking this up when it drops in price. At this time its not worthy of 50 euros

Point taken, although I do think anything that has a 'zombie' focus following Dawn of the Dead / Shaun of the Dead in 2004 is cynical to varying degrees. Even Left 4 Dead, but we'll let them away with it ;)

If it has zombies in it most likely I'll find it great, you put a zombie in a Zac Efron film and I would prob watch it
