Maybe the zombie apocalypse has already happened and we just haven't noticed because it only happens at night.

So apparently the retail version out now is actually a debugging development version. With built in no-clip mode by pressing Y and third person view (which looks terrible).

Oh WOW that was a bit retarded.

That's a pretty god damn ridiculous bug to miss. You'd wonder if they do any QA testing at all.

It's not a bug, it seems that the (360) development build was uploaded to Steam by accident.

Or there is a stray XML file included in the PC build.
    Which makes more sense.

Despite the issues im looking forward to this. Im not expecting it to blow me away, but i played borderlands in SP mode and even tho most of that game was jsut fetch quests i loved it all the same. Im expecting this to be similar but with zombies. I also like how its not mobs of zombies a la L4D, id rather go mano a mano with a couple of zombies that are tough to kill rather than just unload on wave after wave of throwaway zombies.

With some luck the patch will fix alot of the issues, and the PC version should do away with any of the graphical niggles.

The stray XML would explain the 360ness of the build but the actual functionality which is unlocked, namely the no-clip and unfinished third person view, is clearly the mark of a dev build.

    Well, of course.
The idea that it's a 360 build is nonsense, the idea that it's got at least some debug flags switched on is less so.

I was going to get this but if it's a buggy mess, I'm giving it a miss. I'm playing Fallout: New Vegas at the moment, a person can only stand so many glitches and bugs before they crack up.

Shame, I was looking forward to it.

Given that it's Edge, I'm not really worried.

While they can be up themselves, they are usually honest when it comes to stuff that isn't Halo. Reading their review seems to backup every concern previews had about the game, while adding a few more. Lulz at this:
An additional quirk sees everyone refer to your character as ‘him’ – even if you play as a woman.

I think the most damning criticism I've read is that the melee combat is repetitive and dull. For a game that has this as it's main gameplay element that's a deal breaker for me.

I take it you never played Hidden & Dangerous so? :)

Its so heavily inclined toward melee combat, that the system would have to be very satisfying and very tight in order for the game to be enjoyable for the long haul. According to the reviews, it falls down even in its main selling point.

It reminiscent of Sniper Ghost Warrior. If a team have small resources, why not pick a handful of game mechanics and concentrate fully on those. Why did they end up making a shoddy FPS with some sniping, instead of a dedicated sniping game. Similarly, Techland could have stuck with the tone of the trailer and made a tight 8 hour campaign focusing on one man's struggle against the zombie horde. Lose all the padding that they seem not to have implemented well anyway, and just make a solid, focused game which isnt a dogs dinner of L4D/ Dead Rising and Fallout. A serious Zombie game...

I had a suspicion this would be crap, Ill forget it for now. Maybe in 6 months to a year's time when its next to nothing and well patched.

Given that it's Edge, I'm not really worried.
Edge can be harsh but I doubt they're making up the problems with the collision-detection and the over-spawning of items. Complete game-breakers no matter how subjective you want to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

It's fairly buggy, alright, but not as shìt as I had thought on first impressions at least. I picked the woman and I'm constantly referred to as "him" :pac:

Being surrounded by zombies and then having your shìtty piece of wood break creates some nice tension, though I have found myself just running around kicking zombies in the face.

So far, so good but I'm still early in it.

I imagine the retail version which wasn't released irons out some of these kinks, such a stupid mistake that was made to release the beta.

wow what a mess, the game still looks great though. Just seen it patch up on steam, though i still cant play it til midnight thursday :/

Ok, after playing a bit more it just seems to be alot of "Can you go over here and get me this?" and "I need you to go over there to do that".

It gets really monotonous when all your quests consist of this and you just pick off which is the least boring one to do:
Like the one where a woman, during a zombie outbreak, needs you to go to a bungalow and fetch her necklace.............during a zombie outbreak. Oh, and another quest involves you going across the island to fetch a teddy bear for another woman. Jesus Christ.

Nobody does jack shìt in this game and are like lost little children demanding you serve their needs. Everyone hides while you have to do EVERY. SINGLE. THING.

On top of that, which may be a result of the beta release, you have to revisit alot of the same places which results in you meeting the same zombies in the same spots over & over & over again. I'd expect some respawning but you don't have to travel too far before you see the tougher ones crop up in the same spots and in same positions you'd find them in the first time. Really breaks the flow of the game for me as FarCry 2 had this problem.

So far this is just FarCry 2 - Zombie Edition which has turned my opinion around. I'm finding it a real struggle to be interested in this game now in regards to the quest. The combat, though, I still find kinda fun.

here's the techland apology and patch notes for the US version taken from their site..
    http://deadisland.deepsilver.com/blog.php

Here’s the latest from us on Dead Island PC for North American users. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused to fans who wanted to spend their day crushing some zombie skulls. Thank you very much for your continued patience and support and we are completely committed to ensuring that you have an excellent time with our game.

    · First, the correct version of the title is now available on Steam and fans are able to download it now.

    · Second, the day 1 patch notes in their entirety are below. · Third, Deep Silver plans to announce a “make up” to North American fans who were affected by the day 1 PC issues, stay tuned in coming days for those details as internal discussions are ongoing on our end.

    · Fourth, the Bloodbath DLC is still on schedule as planned – fans who preordered the title will still receive the Bloodbath DLC when it launches (date will be announced shortly!) as stated previously.

Played it for twenty minutes there, completely bored already.

    - Melee combat is repetitive, dull and pretty random. Weapons also break after a few uses, meaning you're constantly changing or picking up new ones.
    - My character won't stop shouting about how fvcked up all this is.
    - The interface is horrible and clearly designed for a console. If you set the mouse sensitivity to normal in the game then it is ridiculously slow and sluggish in the menu, a menu you have to use a lot. Maybe this is just me, but I have to swing my mouse from one side of the pad to the other just to move it from one option to the next. Every time you pick up a weapon it is equipped automatically and the only way I can see to go back to the old one is to open your inventory, double click the weapon you want and then click the quick slot. Repeat this every time you grab a new weapon, which is every two minutes.
    - I am literally on the third quest and I already have no concept of why I'm doing anything other than the fact that the quest giver told me to go there and click on the zombies until they fall over.
    - Of the first ten minutes of the game, you spend eight of those ransacking suitcases for anything useful, as ordered by the game. You are not, however, allowed to pick up the axe on the floor. I am completely sick of clicking on six objects in every room to gather items. Also, each thing must be clicked twice, once to search, once to take the single item it produces.
    - There is a door opening "mini-game". It's for doors that are, like...stuck or something? You have to move the mouse backwards, and then move it forwards, and then move it backwards or maybe forwards again. After a while you open the door.
    - When you swing your weapon is has some sort of warping-bending effect going on, as if it is displacing space and time with its passing, not sure what that is in aid of.
    - You have to pay cash to a work bench in a shack on a beach filled with dead people to repair your knife. Don't worry though, you'll get money after you search all the zombies and trash cans. My favourite is that if you search a PC you take out a magnet. Sweet.
    - The voice acting is ok to poor.
    - Saving and spawning is weird. I picked up a gas cylinder fromt he back of a pickup and threw it at a zombie. I came by the same way a few minutes later and the gas cylinder had respawned on the pickup as though God was going around cleaning up after me. I got a checkpoint after finishing a quest about half a mile from "HQ" and quit the game. When I reloaded I was back at HQ but the quest was finished. My car had also teleported back with me.
    - The scenery is gorgeous. I have never wanted to go on a tropical holiday as much in my life. I would post a screenshot but for some reason PrintScreen captured my desktop instead of the game...

I'm sure there's plenty more to the game but I have very little interest in loading up that save.

This could describe 99% of Borderlands too however, yet not many people complained about that

I doubt it, but the game is an FPS so your not really supposed to play it from a third person perspective, someone using the dev buid from steam just having some fun :pac:

The game was never supposed to be played from a third person perspective so the animator wouldn't have spent time crafting animations which never have been seen. The basic bobbing/walking/running you're seeing is all that's required to give the attached camera the sense of movement from the first person perspective.
