Under the eircom Residential PSTN Connection Promotion which runs till Juluy 2013 it is free UNLESS eircom can prove it will cost them €7000 or more to provide. This means around 15 poles just for your line, it would be unusual.

Run a Hyrodaire pipe with a nylon string in it to the road as a duct for the cable.

    Hi ashydol,

Pretty much as per Sponge_Bobs post. It's extremely rare that anyone is charged for installation during a promotion. It's usually only in extreme cases. I'm working here 5 years and have only seen it happen once which was a house on top of a mountain with no nearby poles/cables. If there was to be a charge you'd be advised in advance so it will normally be fine. It could possibly take a bit longer than the normal 10 working days though as sometimes we need planning permission if new poles need to go in. If you call sales on 1800 503 303 (freephone) they can run through the details for you.

    Regards

    James

We had eircom do a survey awhile back, they said we would have to dig a trench down to our house on a shared laneway, as the neighbour objected to a poll being erected, in order to get a phone line. Should we have to pay for the cost of this?

Not if the cost of the job is under €7000 in total. No. I'd still try to get the pole ( is it only the one) past the neighbour in all fairness. Sometimes a pole and a bit of digging *(and depending on how well hidden the poll is) will do the trick. Getting the road declared public to a point can also help.

Remember the neighbour is denying both you and eircom which is double unfairness.

Thanks, maybe it's time to revisit this, it's been a couple of years. We have the privilege of being one of the few exchanges in the country not enabled for basic DSL, so no hope of getting broadband from them. In fact, on their website awhile back they specifically said the exchange would not be enabled as the area was covered under the national broadband scheme ( to me the nbs now seems like a curse, though are satellite service is just about bearable ).

15 exchanges that were to be enabled ( and were announced in 2007) were abandoned last year after people spent 4 years waiting for eircom to do what they promised. Was youts one of those or one of the 230 odd they never promised to do. ???

I don't think the exchange (Carran, Co. Clare) was ever on the list of exchanges to be enabled. Thanks to the NBS it seems it will never be enabled, that's progress, well done eircom.

It was never listed in fairness. eircom were looking for €500m of then then government ( around 2008) to install VDSL in large towns and rural areas were too distracting for them.

Plenty of fibre as near as Gort and Ennis, ye'll just have to start digging like many other rural communities in Ireland.
