Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Why not try some of the online tutorials and websites? Lynda.com is a superb resource for all things photography?

In before the "understanding exposure by Brian Peterson" recommendation :D

It's a great camera, I'm sure you will really enjoy it. Just get out there and start taking photographs - It's the best way to learn.

There are loads of great online photography sites that you can learn loads from. You probably don't want to hear this, but reading (or a least a good flicking through) the manual for your camera is well worthwhile. You won't want or need a lot of the functions most of the time but you get and idea of what it is capable of for when you do need it.

Best of luck with it and enjoy:)

I'm loath to recommend a book when you should be out playing it the camera, making mistakes, learning and having fun. And as has been said the manual provides a hell of a lot of information.

If you find the manual isn't clear on what something does google it, ask here or look at the web resources already posted above. The 7D isn't different to any SLR, it's 99% the same with some unique features. You don't need a 7D specific resource, perhaps Canon oriented literature at a stretch.

What is fairly unique is the built in wireless flash function and transmissive LCD viewfinder, however these don't need greater explanation that how a regular viewfinder or wireless trigger works on any camera.

More advanced things like custom functions, tweaking the AF and all that don't matter now.

If you're worried about composition and photography then follow the Random Photo Threads here and see what people post. Start threads to ask about techniques and post your own efforts and ask for Comment and Critique (C&C).

The 7D is a fantastic camera, best of luck with with it!

Congrats, I hope you really enjoy the camera and also that we get to see some of the shots!

My first & only SLR is the EOS 40D. I am allergic to reading camera manuals but over the last 3 years I have read the 40D manual cover to cover 3 times. I read it once before I bought it, and twice afterwards.

I have found it really helpful to do this b/c I can now concentrate on lighting, composition & whatnot instead of wondering if I am using the right camera setting etc. The manual does fall short on some points - Like 'What is the difference between AI focus and AI servo' - but it really is a great starting point to get to really know your camera.

So, I guess the best advice is - when you arent taking photos, read the manual...

    Cheers, FoxT
