We noticed this once we got further into the course, and more comfortable jogging. If we stopped to do the walking bit in the middle, we very very often found we lost our rhythm and couldn't start back up again!

It was around that point that we started doing our own thing! Leaving out the walking bit and aiming for maybe 3km, or 3.5 etc. No matter how long it we ran for. We did the same route every day so knew our markers every 500 metres. We'd keep telling each other "just another half", and we'd manage another half a km!

Yeah I'm finding that the rest/break is what kills me. Maybe I'll go for the 15 min or something next week. Like I was grand for the first 10 mins. It was the slowing down that killed me.

I find that stopping in the first half hour is a killer. If I stop, it sucks it all out of me and I can't go back again. Better to even slow down if necessary but not stop.
That's great you're at that stage already :)

Well I kept running even though I was wrecked. I just drastically reduced the speed at which I was moving!! But genuinely, I cannot explain just how unfit I am. This is major, major progress for me.

I've just tried to go to the gym, only to be told it's about to close. At 8pm! It never occurred to me it would close earlier than usual on weekends. What about those of us who have no social life and would like to accomplish something of an evening before sitting down with a bottle of wine??

I think I've been spoiled by years of 24-hr budget gyms! Admittedly my last one was unstaffed and turned into something more akin to an old skool gay pick-up joint after a certain hour, but that was all part of the charm. Stupid small town. I'll have to go in the morning instead, which will entirely disrupt my planned day of lounging, with a little napping thrown in.

Well done everyone who's still at it!

Got the runners back on at the start of January, have to say I was surprised at how much I missed it! I had to stop running for nearly four months due to a strained thigh muscle, apparently I was over doing it

I'm running 5k comfortably three times a week at the moment and looking at stepping it up in distance this month. I'll have to get back into using the app, not too sure what week I should be on though..

Well done to everyone still going strong and to all the newbies :)
Has anyone signed up for any events yet? I believe the Flora Mini Marathon opens up on the 19th of February :-)

No straight running events entered because I'm only building back up at the moment, but am signed up for the London Triathlon Olympic distance (1,500m swim/40km cycle/10km run) in August.

Am trying to pick a few other events too along the way - possibles for me include the Sport Relief 25 mile cycle in March, an aquathon at London Fields Lido in late March/early April (500m swim/5km run), the Great East Swim 2 mile in June, maybe a sprint triathlon (750m swim/20km cycle/5km run) around that time too, the Great London Swim at the end of August, possibly one more swim in September and possibly entering the ballot for the Great North Run again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Not planning on doing all of them! I'll most likely cherry pick from that list. There's at least one of those events which clashes with the possibility of fecking off to Spain or something for my 30th birthday. :)

Wow you must be in good shape, I'm knackered just thinking about doing one of them :D fair play.

I had planned on going out this morning but I'll probably end up the other side of the island in that wind! Maybe it will die down later..

    Scarinae - how're the blisters?!
    sullivlo wrote: »
I too was about to ask about the blisters :)

The blisters themselves have gone - incidentally, I discovered that taping cotton pads to your feet is almost as good as plasters until you can buy some - but now I have hard skin there instead. Yuck! Thankfully nobody except me will see it, as it's currently boot weather and I won't see my boyfriend until March.

I signed up for my first run today, and I've paid for it and all so no backing down! It's only a 5k and it's not timed, so it's more of a fun run, but it gives me something to focus on!

I've also been using a pedometer for a few days now, thought I'd aim for 10,000 steps a day initially to see how it goes and was surprised to see I hit that anyway in a normal day where I don't go jogging.

It's 150 days to my month long holiday in Thailand. I'm sick of carrying around my excess weight and looking crap in my clothes!

Tonight was only a short one, 2km in just under 20 mins. Friday, 30 mins!

I went to the gym today. I ran for 10 minutes. Building back up now after 3 weeks out of the gym with illness.

Can anybody recommend a hair/headband that'll stay in place without 20 clips?

I've an awful lot of hair and I'm sick of all the big chunks of it that stick themselves to my face

I got a few in Penneys. They're kinda like bandanas and I probably look like I'm wearing a pair of knickers on my head, but they're the only ones that stay on!

I got a few thin ones with a silicone on the inside that stops hair from sliding out.

I use a wide Babyliss flowery one that I got in Boots, and a couple of other cotton ones I got in Majorca over the summer. Mostly bandana-style. I have short but very thick hair.

Did anyone do the Operation Transformation 5k today? I was out and was very happy with my time and my overall stamina compared to last year AND I was only 10 mins behind my superfit brother who is a bit of a fitness junkie. Its been a while since I've done a timed event and its made me realise that every run is doing you good.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep an eye out for those. I used to use a buff as a bandana but there was too much material and my head got all hot :)

Wah wah wah. A couple of weeks ago I got sick and following on from that I got lazy and so I have been firm friends with my couch with the only exercise being an occasional walk to a shop nearby is selling off those Cadbury's mousse snowmen for 50c each. Back out tonight to go Week 2 again and it nearly killed me. Turns out it's not a good idea to eat dinner and ice cream and then run. Lesson learned!!

I'm starting a really intense course shortly so I really want to get running bedded into my week beforehand. My experience with spending all week either in college or in work is that I turn into a slob, would like to avoid that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Lola92

I was lying in bed feeling lazy and decided I didn't want to feel lazy any more. So I went out and re-started c25k. I haven't run in about a year, very little exercise other than the odd cycle/walk. I have a lot of weight to lose but determined to become healthier. I managed about half the running of w1d1, brisk walked for the rest. I knowi that sounds fairly pathetic but Im taking the glass half full approach! Going to repeat it until I can manage the full run, move on and continue that way. Going to aim for a 5k run by September. :)

I went out Wednesday for 20 mins, meant to g out Friday but went out instead. Yesterday was match day so that was a write off! Went out tonight, managed just under 13 mins (1.2km, combination of walking and running) when I succumbed to my latent hangover. a combination of Friday and Saturday! I'd say the kebab last night didn't help. Nor did the cheesecake today. But onwards and upwards :D

Carvery here for dinner at lunch time followed by BLTs and chocolate fingers for tea! I've tomorrows lunch and snacks all made up and In the fridge and an alarm on to get up in time for a proper breakfast instead of the usual mandarin in the car followed by crazy 10am sugar craving!! My usual downfall is failure to prepare and grabbing the nearest sugary processed crap on a detour to the vending machine between lectures. It won't get me this time!

Good stuff outta you :) Everyone has to start somewhere, build up over a couple of weeks to the full W1D1 if you need to. Slow buildup and you'll be fine, you should be well able to do the 5km by September and probably before then.

Have been zonked myself over the last week or so with a nasty viral throat infection, tried to get back out yesterday with a 2 mile run, and nearly ended up fainting at the end! Decided to rest again today, and I'll probably chance a short slow swim (1km-ish) tomorrow - hopefully it won't absolutely pancake me! It's especially frustrating because I was supposed to be doing a 10k in March, which would have been my first one in over 9 months.

Breakfast is usually cereal bars and juice! It's breaktime in the staffroom that kills me. Sausage rolls, cake, other stuff people have brought in! I do get school dinner, usually go for the pasta/rice option which is filling, but not always the nicest! If it looks a bit yukky I'll get a panini which is greasy as hell!

Made dinner for today and the next two nights in the slow cooker though. Chicken leg done on a bed of carrots and onions with chicken stock. Will have brown rice with it. Nom nom nom squishy carrots.

    I just went jogging!!!

I also realised how MONSTROUSLY unfit I am- I barely managed 20 minutes of the 1st day of the programme, but f#ck it, it's more than I did yesterday!!

Did another bit of running today. I increased the speed rather than the time. Treadmill.

Then did 7km on the bike.

And walked home from the gym.

    I. Am. Shattered.

I'm starting back at Couch to 5k tomorrow, after having had my gorgeous little baby boy just over six weeks ago.

I had been running a wee bit the last couple of years, up until getting pregnant, but not much. I did pretty much no exercise during pregnancy :o - however I lost a good bit of weight thanks to morning sickness. And I did notice that, the odd time I had to sprint to the bus or whatever (even at 8+ months pregnant) I felt fitter than before and was running faster than before! So I'm hoping I'm starting from a good place ... I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight within a few days, and weigh maybe half a stone less now than I did before ... I still feel very flabby though!

Looking forward to getting back into some sort of an exercise routine. :)

Well I've had my six-week check and everything was fine, I didn't actually specifically ask her about exercising but that's the last appointment so I assume it's fine! :/

And yes, I'm doing them religiously! :D

Week 2, Day 3, Third Go. The biggest stabbiest stitch I've had in years attached me during the third run. I looked not very elegant at all for the last 2 runs, when I could barely lift my feet off the ground and was syncopating my stride with irregular wheezing breaths and loud swearing. I can't wait till the week when the whole of the run feels as amazing as the first minute does.

No I just kept running, as bad as it was. It got pretty bad at one point where I was like, 'sure I can just pee my pants and get in the shower when I get home'. Thankfully that moment of insanity passed and I made it home without smelling like p*ss.

This time last year I was halfway through C25k. I stopped in May because I hurt my knees. Elverys insoles seem to have sort it mostly, so I've been doing a bit again recently. I've been jogging/walking in intervals while I get used to the insoles, not running. But to be honest I like that, I prefer it to constant jogging/running.

    Today I did 10k in 78 mins :) Delighted.

I'm finding it hard to break 2k. I was going great and then I got sick so was out of the gym on medical advice. I'm back in the gym now but I started a new job so by the time I get there I am wrecked tired. I may need to try going earlier in the day.

    Anywho. 2k. Yeay! *grumbles*

Try going back to intervals for a while maybe. Do 1.5k, walk for a bit, then do another 1.5k.

The intervals kill me. I think I need to do a walk first and get breathless and then start running.

Amazing. This time next year I want to be you!

Day 1 of week 3 today. When yer wan on my podcast said it'd be a 3 minute run I nearly sloped off to the shop for cake and gave the whole thing up as a bad job but decided I needed to at least try. So I just paced myself, I have an awful habit of flying through my first run and being winded and pooped for the rest or <shame> speeding up if I'm passing by people who look like they run or <double shame> are hot </double shame> so they don't think "Back to your couch Porpoise Lady, you're embarrassing yourself with your slothsome waddle" </shame>. Keeping at a pace I could manage, even if it didn't make me feel like a gazelle, worked. Got through the whole thing with no stitches and no urges to chuck up.

First time I actually thought I might get to 5km some lovely day :)

Ah now you've made me blush! Tbh I can't believe I did it, I'm not "that" person. I usually do a 4.5-5k route I stick to, for the last while I've been breaking in these insoles so just walking mostly, I have a nice rule for jogging/running that I prefer to follow now. Then last week I'd done about 5k and I was so sick of sitting at home for days on end I thought I'll do another bit to kill time, ending up doing 7k in total, unheard of before. Instead of thinking "right I must run now for 20 whole minutes" I run when I get a burst of wanting to do it, go as long as I can/want, and then go back to walking fast until I fancy running again. At about 6k today my thighs were like eh wtf is this why are we still going, then at about 8.5k I decided to run another bit and omg I was flying, delighted with myself.

If I can do it anyone can :) Oh yeah and on worrying that "proper" running people will judge your slow pace, I always think that people passing have no idea how long you've been out running for, so they can't judge you for how tired you look, if you look tired it means you've been working hard! I was fit to drop at 8k today, and thought "if anyone looks at me now they'll think I'm dying!", and it'd be a well deserved death at the side of the road too after my first 10k :D

I think what stops me trying running/jogging out is how ridiculous I think I'll look, with my tomato red face and that everyone will be looking at me and laughing at how pathetic I am (How ridiculous is that!?) !:p I'm tempted to give it a go though. I skip as it is and I think I prefer that mainly because I don't have to be worried about people looking at me and judging. I think it's mainly that I am quite self conscious (my self esteem is not great tbh), or maybe paranoid is a better word.:o I might try it out though. My brother started running recently, and I kind of want to give it a whirl!

Omg, re-reading that, I sound crazy!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Nobody will look at you and think "jaysus look at that big red face", if they think anything it'll be "fair play to her out running". If you're really worried though maybe run at night or first thing in the morning?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 11,362 ✭✭✭✭Scarinae

Precious flower, I jog wearing bright pink tracksuit bottoms and I'm sure my face is nearly the same colour, but nobody gives me a second glance (that I've noticed anyway :D) As someone pointed out in an earlier post, nobody else knows how long you've been running for - you could be near the end of a 10k run for all they know. Don't let it stop you!
