What if Facebook (or other social media) shutdown permanently?

What effect would there be? Would camera maufacturer sales go down, telelphone bills soar, E-mail back in mainstream usage? Workplace productivity?

Its so utterly widespread(600 million) and ingrained into our mindsets so there would have to some major ruckus!
Frankly it would be hilarious and interesting to see how certain people adjust!

I hardly ever use Facebook but it is handy to have contacts with people I haven't seen in years and likely will never see again.

If it went I imagine a load of teens would go crazy and start killing us all. Death by teen they would call it.

There's still porn tbh, won't make much of a difference.. 'cept the workplace might be a little messier.

Might not be wise to use the office toilets, either

I'm sure we'd find something else to fry our brains with.

Heck I remember the 80's when if you wanted to find out where somebody was you waited until they came home and YOU ASKED THEM!!!

People would be a lot more annoying, they would have to do their boasting in real life instead of on the internet.

I'd say poeple would be mad for about a week before they'd forget about it.

    Personally, I probably wouldn't notice.

The twittering masses would probably find some other way to discuss 16 and Pregnant after a couple of days.

Imagine all those nerds leaving the sanctity of their mildewed bedrooms, walking out into the light of day.

    Uglifying the landscape.

I'd say there's a greater percentage of "nerds" on Boards tbh..

And if yeh want to see ugly go into the "know your nerds" thread..

I'd genuinely miss facebook, its brilliant for keeping me in the loop in regards to Judo, BJJ & MMA.

I have a twitter account but never use it, I should really because I've a deadly username (if thats what twitter people call it).

Only one I'd miss a lot if youtube.

    **edit**

Just logged into my twitter account, what the fvck do I do now?.

Go on... you might as well tell us what it is so.

I would lose the plot. I enjoy the fact that i dont have to make public appearances as much since i started using facebook. If facebook went i would have to spend more physical time with people and i wont be able to perv on my female friends and friends of friends :D

Women would actually get dressed in the morning and not go around all day in pyjamas.
How important is facebook that somebody hasn't time to get dressed? I know people just like the ones I described,if facebook closed down they'd never survive it.

There would be no point going out any more because you couldn't tag each other the next day and tell each other how hot you looked.

Like them, hate them or don't care about them, but why would you want them to be shut down permanently? They represent a huge technological and social advancement in global society. Such progress is important and serves a great purpose

    I'm living in China.

    I have exactly that response regularly;
    "What is Facebook?"
    "What is Youtube?"
    "What is Twitter?"

People have honestly never heard of any of them. Nor do they care about them. They have their own popular, censored, homegrown services. No twitter revolutions are happening here anytime soon.

To some degree, social networking has had an important and significant impact on the world. It was been shown that a lot of the protests in Egypt were organized over Facebook and Twitter, so had it not been for these, it's unlikely that they would have been organized as quickly as they had.

i despise facebook and the like, so it wouldnt bother me if they closed down

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭123balltv

    facebook oh you mean stalkerbook
most people I know go on stalkerbook to stalk idiots who never leave the house.

trust me in a few years facebook will be gone, gone, gone :D:D all the
sado's who use it will be dead

People would stop coming on here to bitch about how they hate the new layout/features/security settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭bmarley

I have pity for those people who spend the day on facebook liking everything and telling everyone their business. And how do people have nearly 1000 friends? Would be no harm if it closed down, the young generation might get outdoors and start living again. Photography has never been so big...and all those facial expressions!

I'd be d'loited. Of course I'll be out zombie spotting that evening to see people out on the street who havn't been outside since the last power cut

There is nothing advanced about them, if anything it's a dumbed down version of socialising over a dumbed down version of technology. They do nothing that couldn't have been done in the early 90's using technology they had back then, the only difference being that the ordinary Joe on the street didn't know how to use it. Spending hours on twitbook or facebook won't make you technologically advanced; if only it was that easy.

I dont think anyone who is on the internet discussing facebook on boards can really make fun of people who actually use facebook...bit ironic there.

Anyways I'd definitely miss it if it went. Theres a couple of people I've met when travelling that I still keep in touch with over it. If it wasnt for the likes of facebook this wouldnt have happened.

A lot of my friends have emigrated and it makes keeping in touch with them easier, and being able to look at their photos and what not.

Plus stalking can be fun... :o

I blame all this on these new "smart phones" iPhones etc

People just can't help but plug into the matrix these days. Twitter and what not.

I get the majority of my business through facebook so I'd be pretty gutted! I'm sure I could go back to using just my website but facebook is so interactive it's great, whenever I update my page it goes straight to fan's news feeds so it's a nice little reminder that I'm there, whereas people have to actively look up a website. And when real people on facebook leave happy customer reviews it's really good, instead of just a load of stuff that could've been made up on a website.

Not a very AH answer but meh.

Just thinking without facebook, exclusive events would actually become "exclusive" again, meaning you just couldn't turn up to the party/event and people asked would be "real" friends, but would have to be in the know/loop with others....i know in college, my friends often get large of people(a 1000 or whatever) clicking "i'm attending" and yet only 100 turn up!

it'd be a lot harder to organise people by phone than simply adding your 500 friends/friends of friends to the invitation list and every bozo turning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭Little Acorn

Wouldn't bother me personally in the slightest as I'm not on Facebook or Twitter or any of the rest, and I wouldn't have to listen to friends nagging me to join it, or listen to people I barely know going "omg, I can't believe yr not on facebook!!!"
I can see why businesses [like Spadina's post mentioned] would miss it though.

Have people no instant messaging, skype or email these days? All has to be done through some advertising filled website made by some snobby lad who had a latte too many?

It wouldn't bother me the least although I still think its a good substitute for keeping in touch to the likes of skype, I use it to a minimum thankfully as anyone who spends all day everyday on it hasn't much class or social skills whatsoever.
