Have eircom landline, the phone point in the hall has two sockets on it, one with pic of computer and one with phone. When I plug phone into phone socket it doesnt work. I took the front panel off and plugged the cable directly into phone point socket and it worked, so Im assuming the front panel is bad. Is this easy to replace?

Hi , you don't say if you have extn's or alarm connected on the line , when you removed the front panel off the socket , were there any cables connected to it?.If there are cables connected to it , it would suggest a fault in to an extn/s or alarm ,if not , you will need to log a fault report with eircom , as these socket's are not available to the public -hth

The front panel is where your extension wiring is connected. The socket behind it is for testing the line. When you remove the front panel, you disconnect all the extension wiring automatically.

It sounds more like you have a faulty extension socket shorting something out.
    Check the other sockets.
