    Hey all,

I'm hoping someone here has a better memory than my own...

Does anyone remember the name of a pedal steel guitar player who played on Rte's Other Voices about two-three seasons ago? He was a soloist and played an amazing blues/country song that for some strange reason has come back to me to find and have a listen. Not one to be beaten on these things but i've tried loads of googling/youtubing different searches and came up with zilch so i've turned to boards for help! I've a faint memory of him having dark hair or a beard and i'm almost sure he was an American chap (southern region i think) At the time John Kelly was presenter of the show and also gave him some good airtime on his Lyric Fm slot too.

Any ideas on who it was?

Suggestions much appreciated as its been at me all day!
    Cheers

    I suggest asking here:

The producers will check with John to see if he remembers.

    Any joy finding the guy?

I know Richard Nelson from Drogheda released an album of Jazz tracks played on pedal steel, he's highly regarded as one of the best players in the country... strong possibility that it could have been him?

Was it Clive Barnes? I know he doesn't have dark hair and its lap steel as opposed to pedal steel but I just thought i'd throw it out there. He's from Wexford if I remember correctly, he did an Irish tour with Luan Parle last year. here's a link to his Other Voices performance on youtube below.

Another guy it might be is Kelly Joe Phelps, he's from the US, plays a similar style and tours here regularly.

It could also be Daniel Lanois, I was listening to the RTE Radio 1 show 'South Wind Blows' a few weeks ago and Philip King (producer of other voices) played Daniel Lanois' solo pedal steel performance from other voices recorded acouple of years back, it sounded haunting and amazing I had to pull my car over to just stop and listen to it and take it all in.

This is not the other voices performance but it could be the same tune

    Hey 333joemc,

Nearly two years on you've come up trumps here!

Had completely forgotten about this thread only to be checking an old email address today and saw your reply. That's the guy alright and i think it might be the same tune but not so sure about that. Good to see his other voices show is still getting the occasional radio play though...it was indeed a cracker of a performance. Must request it from that show you mentioned now that i know who it is.

Thank a lot for that and hat's off to you for solving a two year mystery!

Its a link to the full radio programme where I heard it played on 14 October last, fast forward to the 22 minute mark to hear the pedal steel.
