Samsung Galaxy S - sound quality

I've a quick query re the sound quality of the Galaxy S. Basically when I make or receive a call I find that the sound quality is quite poor. Is there anything I can do to increase the volume?

Press the volume increase rocker on the side when making a call?

I'm afraid I tried that and it doesn't seem to make it any better. I can't seem to figure it out at all.
