Apparently they rehired a few Bully's staff. Good thinking in terms of getting old regulars back in. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Finally tried Ramen at Dennehy's Cross last night. Only fair I thought. I had the red thai massman curry with tofu. They certainly don't know how to cook tofu properly and the rice was over cooked. The sauce was a bit bland. I don't understand how this place is so busy. It definitely wouldn't survive in Dublin

Oh god I don't know I knew a few of the staff from the old days and have to say they were gone to pot!! Still though why would he put a sign up looking for staff and not get back when people do apply pet hate

Malay Kitchen on South Main Street is pretty great! 9 quid for a massive portion of noodles. 10 for rice and a dish!. Crispy chilli beef is unreal. Pretty damn happy with it!

I had lunch in Coqbull the other day. I was quite impressed with it overall. It's a very simple menu but it's done well. I had lovely chicken wings and himself had a burger he really enjoyed. Both came with chips, we got a free soft drink (from a splash gun, not the real thing, but it was fine) and both main courses cost €10 each. Good value for a filling lunch. The staff were also really nice and helpful, and it was great to see the rotisserie chickens cooking in the kitchen.

had dinner in Orso the other night - twas a fab dining experience.
Between Orso, Italee and cafe gusto and places like that - cafe style - great food in an informal setting - seems to be a new tread in dining? or am in late to this? what ever it is; i'm loving it!

Not new by a long shot but ate in greenes for the first time ever last week , noice ... Thought it was gonna be a bit floofy at first when I read the menu, lots of" duos of" and "textures of" but it really delivered (and I can be a bit hyper critical) .
Not cheap, but well worth it and while it's a formal restaurant, the service wasn't stiff ... I'll be bringing my wife next time :-)

Hey guys...just wondering if anyone can recommend a nice cosy restaurant for mid week dining?
I've tried Coqbull a few times already, Liberty grill as well...is there any place similar to these that anyone can suggest? Thanks :)

Had dinner in Scoozi last night, some kind of cheap & cheerful, cosy goodness for a great price - :)

Me and my two friends had dinner in Coqbull tonight, have to say we really enjoyed it! It was busy enough so we had to wait about 15 mins for a table. No problem with this but waitress could have asked if we wanted to order drinks or something while we waited. My friends had burgers (bacon bull and supreme bull which had bone marrow with it - bit unusual) and I had rotisserie chicken. We were given extra chips too at no charge. Dessert was fantastic, we each got something different and shared - icecream with cookies and caramel sauce, an eton mess style dessert and I had a rich chocolate pot with salted caramel and honeycomb. We were stuffed after it! Service was quick once we were seated. Loved the decor and the fact that you can see into the kitchen. My only gripe is that there's only one chicken dish on the menu, they could have a few more.

Tl;dr - Coqbull, good bull, could do with more coq.

totally agree - the food nothing special - its a pity the food does match the vibe of the place - which is great..

we need a DIEP in cork - like in Dublin..

Went to Wabisabi yesterday, second time I've been there for lunch. First time I had chashumen, this time a bonito based soup with udon noodles. Both of them were remarkably tasty and I'll definitely be back.

First time we also had starters which were alright but didn't blow my mind like the main did, especially as it came with "special sauce" aka mayo with something. Gyoza and mayo just doesn't do it for me as a combination. There's soy sauce on the table though, so I happily used that instead. Also the veg tempura was awesome, really nice, light and crispy.

I ate in the Anglesea St Ramen for the first time the other day.
Went for their 6 before 6 deal (which they don't exactly go out of their way to highlight). The deal that day was for Chicken Khao Pad.

It was dull and flavourless, really. There was a big portion of rice and not much else. Well, ok, a reasonable amount of very small pieces of chicken but microscopic pieces of veg. The only real flavour was from the occasional morsel of celery that showed up. I don't recall any fresh coriander. To call this dish dull is being kind.
At €6 it was filling, if nothing else. If I had paid €10.95 for this dish I would be fuming.
If I was passing during the day and was hungry, I might just have another go at the €6 deal but I wouldn't go out of my way for their food, and I certainly wouldn't even briefly consider paying full price for anything there going on the flavour of this dish.

Met a friend there for lunch during the week just to try it out as well! It was packed, was glad we were there before one. Food was underwhelming I thought, Wagamama do a better job of that type of cuisine imho.

The ice-cream cone they give you with the meal was a nice touch except that when we tried the machine all we got was a dribble of unfrozen ice-cream mix :(

Having tried it now I won't be heading back.

Coincidently I had a very nice lunch in Gallo & Galetti in B'town as well last week, we were almost the only people there though. Hope they do good business in the evenings as it would be a shame if it didn't make it.

    How odd,
I called into Ramen Thur night, my first visit, I had heard lots of good things, so said I'd try it out, it was very busy and I was having take out (next time I will order and collect)..

The place was jointed and I had no clue what I wanted, so after a short queue, I ordered, spring rolls and red thai massaman.

verdict: bit of a wait but that was ok, I understand they are doing the eating in house, take out and collect yourself.

but boy was it good, really good, not greasy, spring rolls were lovely.

and the curry was piping when I got home.. lots of it, couldn't finish it in face, but one of the best massamans, I've had in a while in Cork..

try it , I had a good experience but maybe I hit it on a good night

Are you following me around opus? I ate from ramen and gallo and galetti in the last few weeks as well.

Ramen got a thumbs down I'm afraid, and I used to be a fan. Asked for extra chilli on everything, got no chilli anywhere. Not one shred, everything was bland. Veg was not fresh like the last time either, all limp. Boo.

Gallo and galetti big thumbs up. Food great, price great, atmosphere was better than the last time. Was jammers, midweek evening. Only thing I'd say is I didn't realise there were any specials until I was going out the door, because I was sitting with my back to the specials board and the staff didn't mention them.

wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. think they're food is totally overpriced for what you get, the premises is actually quite dirty and the service leaves something to be desired imo.

Good size pizza but barely any toppings, tiniest amount of cheese, and a goats cheese salad with maybe 2 - 3 cubes of goats cheese in it, our waiter was not nice at all either.

50 euro for a salad, Pizza, and 2 beers I expected better, 1st and last time.

Yeah, that's right. I used to go there occasionally, but after a REALLY bad service experience a few years ago I haven't set foot in it since.

I think they're suffering too because they're constantly emailing me discount codes, which is often the sign of a struggling restaurant.

I'm really liking the explosion of different, interesting and quality dining and drinking options Cork has experienced in the past year or so. And consequently, how well they seem to be doing.

I think one of the positives of The Great Recession is that people won't accept standard fare anymore. They want flavour, variety, atmosphere and quality if they choose to eat out.

I dont have anything bad to say about Annies regarding hygiene, but I know someone who used work there, who used always be giving out at the place, Dishwasher broken down, Leaking roof things that sort of thing and properly repairing things seemed to done at the absolutely last resort

Havent been in there though for the last 18 months so cant comment on how hygiene has been recently

NOBODY (in their right mind) goes to Milano without a voucher - the prices on the menu are only for show, for you to think about how much you have saved with your voucher. Also, drinks there are VERY expensive.
Having said that, I like the place (bear in mind I also like The Eastern Tandoori, Cork Board's most hated restaurant) - the pizzas are tasty, they do an excellent children's menu and it's very good value, assuming you have a voucher. I have been there loads of times and will continue to return, especially since children are so welcome and mine like it so much.

Without wanting to get on the wrong side of Sporina (having seen the grilling northgirl got), I was also unimpressed with Annies. We went in May for a Confirmation meal and the pork main course was completely over-cooked and chewy. That was annoying enough but then for dessert, the apple tart tasted of nothing but cinnamon - I mean literally like someone accidentally spilled an entire container of cinnamon over the tart and then cut and served it (this may or may not have happened). It was completely inedible of course but when I brought it up with the waiter he said he would mention it to the kitchen and was never seen again, by us at least!

While I'm ranting, I should also mention that I had a disappointing meal in The Rendezvous (Model Farm Road) last week. While not Annies-level awful, the food was bland and dry, particularly the Full Irish pizza (which I didn't order but tasted) which was basically indigestion on a plate. It was a pity because the staff were excellent (I recognised the French maitre-d from the old Kingsley Hotel) and it's a handy spot for me. I'll give it another try before the end of the year but it's on a warning now!

Was in the Market Lane again yesterday for a spot of lunch. They've changed the menu again, and have added a couple of interesting fish dishes. One of which was a fish platter which I tried and thought it was absolutely delicious!

There was tempura-battered cod which was nice and light with a couple of chips, smoked salmon, seared tuna (again cooked perfectly), and a lovely home-made potted smoked trout served with a couple of slices of artisan bread lightly toasted. The dish was served on a bed of salad leaves, and a dash of tartare sauce for the cod. The only slight blemish on the meal was the celeriac remoulade which was a bit salty. But the whole dish was wicked!!

Spoke to the waitress and the manager who told me that the dish had only been on the menu for two days, but were happy to get the feedback. I definitely want another fish platter soon...
