The lawn (~1 acre) in places looks a bit hungry (yellow patches) here and there.
Whats the best fertilizer to use?
Dont want to put on any nitrogen as this will shoot up grass on the rest of the lawn.

What about a bag of 10-10-20.
will it work this time of the year?
also, what ye think about shaking by hand out of a bucket?

A spring fertilzer will be high in nitrogen anyway. Wait a month and use a standard feed and weed (maybe with moss killer). Watch for Aldi/Lidl in the next few weeks, they should have some. For an acre I would imagine you would need a spreader.

10-10-20 still has 10 units of nitrogen and some ps and ks

For a 1.3 acre lawn i bought this. well worth it imo, and I use 10-10-20, but won't be putting it down until the lawn drys up a bit.

I think something high in Nitrogen is your answer. I cut my lawn on Monday during the nice spell of weather but it is due to drop a few degrees for the next week so not expecting much growth.

If you are going to cut it for the first time just trim a little off the top and leave the cutting on the lawn, naturally high in nitrogen.

10-10-20 is good, balanced and not overpriced for the larger lawn,

If you're looking for something higher in N then ask for 18-6-12 but use sparingly as it will drive on growth,

Definitely get a spreader, they're cheap and do a good job...

I'd recommend keeping to light coatings and do it twice during the season, it will keep it looking good without blowing it on too much at any one time...

Leaving the clippings on is a good job but if you have kids running round they drag it everywhere:rolleyes:

I think it was 18:6:12 I used last year aswell and the results were great, like viagra for the lawn :) spread it with one of those push spreaders.

I also scarafied the life out of the lawn and it looked terrible for a few weeks but after 5-6 weeks it was the best lawn in the hood.

urea would have the highest nitrogen in it at 42%

Where could I but a decent spreader in Ireland to do a one acre lawn? I got the cheapo spreader free with lawn fertiliser in Woodies last year but it wasn't worth a damn and actually caused some damage to the lawn when it started feeding out too much fertiliser which killed off some of the grass.

I have a Castelgarden lawn tractor. Is it possible to get a spreader to attach to the back of this? I don't want to spend a fortune on the spreader though and if the one linked to above is the best one I can get for that kind of money, then thats where I'll go. Having something that works well and will last is important to me.

The cheapo one I got in Woodies last year was about the same size and it took 3 hours to do the lawn. Trouble was, the flipping thing malfunctioned and dumped too much fertiliser in spots and killed the grass. Buy cheap and pay the price later I suppose. I want a reasonably sized one that will last and help me do the job quicker.

My Dad has still got one he bought over twenty years ago for £100 in UK. He thought it was a great bargain at the time. Twenty odd years later and still going strong, looks like it was an excellent bargain.

In the home place, lawns, back and front are immaculate. You'd be hard pressed to find moss or a weed of any kind in the green grass.

In our place he's struggling to get the same effect
three years later he thinks that the soil quality is not good enough.

<EDIT> I forgot to mention that he uses a range of "stuff" --- 10 10 20 -- 18 6 12 - sulphate of iron, I think. There are also bottles of "stuff" that he mixes with water and sprays on grass from time to time.

Sorry that I'm not much help with the names of the "stuff" he uses --- I'm just told go to the local agri store and pick up the "stuff" he ordered.

That could be my problem too, i.e. the soil on one side of my garden is crap. However, I thought that by regular feeding with fertiliser, it would eventually come good.

Pop down to your local co-op or farm supply place and ask for a push broadcast spreader. I got one there for about 50 Euro.

I bought the below spreader for my ride on. It works fine and fits both a Jonserad and a Craftsman. I beleve all the connections on ride ons are the same. It works great but you have to get the knack of it at first. For example, you must open the trap as your driving otherwise you'll get one big heap of whatever it is ur spreading and this may very well damage ur lawn.

I paid €100 and haven't looked back... Pardon the pun... ;-)

    Here it is: http://www.husqvarna.com/ie/landowner/accessories/product-accessories/rider-accessories/spreader-75/#wheretobuy

Any Hisqarna dealer can get it for you.

On another note, does anyone know where I can get sulphate of iron for spreading as opposed to spraying? My lawn is 1.5 acres, so how much am I looking at spending does anyone know? Moss is fairly heavy but nothing to drastic.

I used Woodies weed and feed granules last year and whilst it worked well, it was damn expensive. Any ideas???

I work in an agri store/ CoOp,
    Here are some handy guides:
GRANLIME: Excellent for rejuvinating older lawns early in the year. No major growth aid, just soil conditioning from over fertilization.

7/6/17+S: Actually a potato fertilizer but it is a perfect mix for lawns, not to high in notrogen, so a nice progressive groth spell. High in potash, which is great for lush green grass. The (S) is sulpher, this wil actually kill off moss. BE WARNED, SULPHER IS VERY harsh on pets paws !!!!

10/10/20: Excellent for lawns that need a boost, once you dont mind mowing more regularly during spells of good growth.

18/6/12: very high in Nitrogen, so a good growth spurt. Not ideal as you will notice the difference in the amount of mowing you do.

UREA: STAY AWAY !!!! You will hear, never mind see the grass growing. If you want to play a prank on someone, this is the stuff to see a neighbour suffer :).

Some of you will know that fertilizer prices have rocketed up this year. You will be paying a far higher price (roughly €100 per tonne more).

    Hope this helps.

    Jonathan.

Could anyone tell me how much i would pay for a bag of 10/10/20 from an agri store/ CoOp and is it a general fertilizer? could i use it in a veg garden too?

I bought two 50 kg bags in Farringtons in Rathcoffey Co. Kildare last year for €25 each. I drive by Farringtons on my way to work and I think they've closed down as there's no sign of life there anymore. Pity as you'll pay a small fortune in the likes of Woodies for large quantities of fertilliser.

  • Registered Users Posts: 157 ✭✭X1R

For 10/10/20, you should still be paying around the €25 euro mark.
Yes Farringtons have gone to the wall unfortunatly.
Stay away from Woodies and the like, your local agri supplier is working off smaller margins and therefore that little bit cheaper.

yep, go where the farmer goes!

    Great post earlier X1R:)

Now has anyone got any idea where I'll find an agri supplier in north Kildare now that Farringtons have gone?

better still :) i serviced 2 forklifts for an agri supplier today and they said they when they get a broken bag they would put it away for me, you wouldn't get that in B&Q or the likes ;)

That application rate is too high for a lawn. It's more like agri rates.
Better to apply little and often in a lawn.
50kg to the acre would be more like it and repeat in six/eight weeks.

If you apply too much you'll just get a growth spurt and if the weather turns wet it will be torture to keep up with. It's also better for long term gardening to apply little and often.

Thanks for that, it is a pity but the agri store I was in has closed over a year ago and I'm out of work since. There are 2 days left for getting fertilizer down before the rain starts. Once you have rain, you get mild weather and hence growth. Get your applications in now, whether it is sulphate of Iron for moss or just fertilizer. Happy gardening everyone ;).

    X1R,
Thanks to your post explaining the different fertilizer types; today I spread a full bag of 7-6-17 on the garden and thankfully a light rain is now falling to wash it in.
Scarified the lawn this morning before putting the fertilizer down so hopefully it will pay off......... incredible the amount of thatch the scarifier pulled up.

Anyhow; paid €30 for the bag of fertilizer which I think is quite steep.........
