ASBESTOS STORM: THE Department of Education is refusing to release a top secret report into possible asbestos contamination at the Letterkenny site it purchased last month for €6M for LYIT. The site at Port Road – opposite the college – has been earmarked for an extension. The Department has also refused to release other details on the valuations of the land and potential flooding risks at the site. Tanaiste Mary Coughlan authorised the purchase of the site from Terry McEniffe, a former mayor and party colleague, and former Letterkenny town clerk Peter Coyle.

Considering the health implications of asbestos, the department should release this report immediately. I find this to be totally unacceptable and this needs to be resolved immediately.

That whole purchase of land reeked to the core from day 1, as far as I can see its just typical of Fianna Fail giving an old buddy a wee favor before they get the boot. Its not as if they would not have known of this contamination before the purchase.

This land was purchased for 6.5mil i remember a couple of years ago they were cutting a cervical cancer vaccine because they couldnt find the money yet now things being worse they find this kind of money to by a white elephant piece of land off a member of the FF then they say they bought it as an investment and will probably use it for car parking why the hell dont they just add a second layer to the existing carpark if their carparking need is so great! Now we have a situation where all that infill thats in the site will need to be removed to make safe the asbestos are we talking another mil for this and im sure theres plenty of ff contractors waiting for the nod for that too

Is this land in any way related to the site mentioned in this story?

Also, it seems like there were 2 parcels of land sold to the Dept of Ed-the 2nd one being a HSE site-is this the one where there are asbestos concerns?

I do not know if the land in the 1st link is the same as the one in the OP. The 2nd link to the IT however is.

There were 22 expressions of interest from landowners and the one directly accross from the college was the obvious choice, it will be temporarily used as an overflow carpark for the college. Reason being the college wanted to add a third floor to part of the college and the residents around the college area put in a complaint to and Bord Pleanala because of the problems they have with students parking in the housing estates because of the lack of parking on campus. The second plot bought is up accross from the hospital and will be used for future sports facilities and some new buildings as long term i think Killybegs courses will move to Letterkenny.

Quote from Paul Hannigan LYIT today:
We would like to reassure all students and staff that, contrary to inferences made in the Friday 25 February edition of the Donegal News, the 10 acre site recently purchased by LYIT at Port Road, Letterkenny, is free of asbestos and other contaminants which would hinder our ability to develop the site.

An environmental site investigation study undertaken by specialists on our behalf in November 2010, as part of the comprehensive ‘due diligence’ process prior to our purchasing the site, established through detailed inspection and chemical analysis that there is no evidence of contaminated soil at the site.

No, not on Boards-was wondering if it was posted as a notice in LYIT or elsewhere.
