Brad is good, but he is 40 and tbh I was hoping for better. But still a solid keeper who is better than what we have at the moment.

Yes.. that was the point I was making. He's a 'Steady Eddie' for sure but its a bit of a boring signing. Still if he does the job for us that he's done for villa in recent years then you cant argue with that.

What I think will happen is, Friedel comes in, Gomes is sold, we buy a new young good keeper who now has two veterans to show him the ropes. The new keeper will then take over as no.1 in a season or two. We've been linked with a gong Belgian keeper, looks a very good prospect.

this is from a modric interview - i think this is very negative

"So I will tell you the same as all ways - my club status is the same as it was before.
"But of course, if there will be an offer which will be good for Tottenham and for me also, then a transfer is of course possible.
"That doesn't mean that I'm bothered with leaving Tottenham - I'm not thinking about that every hour and every minute.
"I'm happy at White Hart Lane - my status is great, the fans like me and I do have everything I need.
"But then again - when you experience playing in Champions League, you want to keep playing in this tournament."

I can't really blame him. He's good enough to be playing for pretty much anyone, and if the offer of Champions League football came around, then he may have to take it. Hopefully he won't, and i don't think he will leave, but it's very much a possibility.

As long as he keeps playing to his potential as long as he's with us, i can't have any complaints.

I cant see how this changes anything. If we want Champions League quality players we need to be playing in the Champions League (especially with the wage structure)

Its how he reacts when Spurs rebuff the first low-ball bid is key. If he continues to play as magnificently for Spurs regardless of firm offers, then Spurs fans cant complain when/if he goes.

It`s a coincidence how this Interview comes on the same day that Paul Scholes announces his retirement!!

I have to admit those words have me a little worried. If we lose Modric, regardless of the fee, we will have taken a step backwards. It doesn't matter who we get to replace him, it's extremely unlikely he'll be as effective, at least not next season when he's really needed.

I understand where he's coming from and to be fair, he doesn't seem to be acting like Berbatov, but it would really sicken me to see him play for Utd next season as it would prove for once and for all that we are nothing but a breeding/proving ground for Utd players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭Morgans

If you want Champions League quality players, you need to be in the Champions League, or you need to be paying over the odds wages. You can count on one hand the number of top class players not playing at top class clubs. It used to be a clear top four in England, there is now a clear top six. Spurs are one of them, but if they want to attract and keep the best players, they will need to decide whether or not to pay them accordingly.

To be honest it's just what's he's always said. Think he'll stay another year think it's the headline which is negative.

    Sounds bad to me.

Players/agents make sure these comments get into the media circles whenever they want to engineer a possible move.

If Fergie is at home wondering if Luka is the man he should go for he has 2 things to think about 1) Can spurs be convienced to sell and 2) will the player be interested in a move.

Well now fergie knows the answer to question 2.

    Simple as.

I wouldn't be worried about this at all. Modric has said what he's always said and has basically left his future in the hands of Levy. Levy came out and said the none of our stars were going anywhere. He can't say one thing and do another, he'd be a hate figure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭keane=cock

to me thats either a nice way of telling spurs fans he is happy but would like to play champions league or as a come and get me invitation to the highest bidder

Its never good when a player makes comments like Modric did. If he wants to go sell him asap and dont have another Berbatov debacle..

I.,m afraid I don't have your faith at all in Levy. If he wants to nip this is the bud he has to offer Modric a new deal on say 90k a week. The only way to keep players when you're not playing in the CL is to pay top dollar which Levy has consistently refused to do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭Morgans

Players who are happy to play for Spurs but would get 1.5 or maybe twice their salaries by other clubs shouldnt be treated as hate figures if they leave. It is up to Levy and the club in general if they want to keep their best players. its more than just saying that we arent selling our best players. Its up to the club to pay the going rate for the best players salary wise, or they will move. People thinking that their is some sort of loyalty involved arent living in the real world. The club has done well to try and avoid the Sol Campbell situation by signing the best players to long contracts. If teams want to buy Bale for instance, they will need to pay for him, and not wait until he becomes disaffected.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,713 ✭✭✭2nd Row Donkey

There's no way we should sell him even if he wants to go.
He signed a 6 year contract last summer.
I understand he wants CL football but he should be told he's here for another season and if we dont make the CL at the end of next season, then and only then will the club listen to offers.

He doesnt strike me as the sort of player to go on strike or anything daft like that... so even if he was forced to stay all through next season I think he'd still play pretty well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭Morgans

There is no point burying your head in the sand. They key phrase in the Modric statement was that if a bid came in that Tottenham were happy with.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,162 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

He won't go anywhere this summer. I'd say he's enjoying his football enough where he is for now, and will move on if we can't secure Champions League football next year. Which would be the right thing for him to do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭mushykeogh

Bye bye Luka im afraid. unless Levy buys 4 superstars its a no brainer. Champions league, great chance of winning a title, play with some top players etc. Players want to win things, the reality is, he is unlikely to win much at spurs.

I would much prefer to see bale go for some stupid amount. Luka means so much more to our current style of play, it would take a season to get over losing him.

As Evra said to Nasri, if you want to win trophies every year go to united. Heartbreaker... but if im Modders i would probably go to united.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭Morgans

I dont think there is any need to think that he is defintely gone - no indication from the interview and there hasnt been a bid. Nothing has changed. A transfer is always possible. United are crying out for a midfielder like Modric, and should a bid big enough come in, its decision time. There is no point worrying about whether he is leaving until there is a bid.

I think thats an accurate description of what should/will happen.

Worse case scenario - we are completely out of the title/CL race by xmas and we cash in then.

If we arent in contention for Champions League, we cant really expect Modric and his class to stay. (especially if we arent paying top dollar)

+1. Both Modric and Bale should have been called in and told, listen lads, here's a contract on 100k a week, your not leaving this football club no matter what. As you said, it would have been nipped in the bud, and all the summer shi*e paper talk wouldn't have even started.

    This exactly!

It's all about a statement of intent. When Carrick and Berbatov were sold we were still very much a mid-table side so you can't argue with allowing either player to leave for a top side.

Harry has stated that we can challenge for the title next season, and our aim has to be top 4 at the least. This makes United/Chelsea our rivals... you don't sell your best player to a rival.

I don't think a move will go through, but if it does should we be looking to get some promising youngsters in return? Pogba/Cleverley/Welbeck at United or McEachran/Sturridge at Chelsea??

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,713 ✭✭✭Cianan2

Rossi looks to be going to Barcelona, we bid for him in January so no doubt he'd choose Barca over us if we were to bid for him again...

Other news, looks like Adebayor will be staying at Madrid (if a price can be agreed) and Diarra might be on his way out of Madrid - I think if we got Diarra we could probably be the best midfield in the league!

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redlknapp says the club will not sell Luka Modric and Gareth Bale this summer.

Speculation is rife that the duo, who have starred for Spurs domestically and in Europe this season, will move on this summer.

But Redknapp has moved to quash rumours that Tottenham will sell their biggest stars.

"The chairman and I have discussed this and we have no intention of selling any of them," he said.

"They are at a top club and we are looking to improve the squad in the summer, not weaken it, in order to push for a Champions League place again next season."

While Bale won the PFA Players' Player of the Year, Modric scooped the Spurs Player of the Year, as voted for by the supporters at White Hart Lane.

I hope we get a relpacement though .. its not like there is alot of players out there that are of enough quality to oust Sandro from the holding role but if we lost Sandro to injury I'd be a bit concerned if we had no decent replacement.

... also this move makes a move for Parker all the more likely now.
