Yeah yeah you keep mentioning America, what about the Far East? Can you see them going out buying Bale shirts? Can you see him being swomped by the media every times he steps outside? I can't.

Ronaldo won Utd leagues/champions league and won a Ballon D'or. He was definitely in the top 2 players in the world when he moved.

    Bale isn't.

There's a number of players who could be classed as better than him.
Ah get out would ya. Ye're saying he's not marketable enough, then I show you he's the face of the PL in America, but apparently that's not marketable enough. What about the Far East? What do you know about the Far East? Have you been there? Have you the slightest clue how well known Bale is out there? It's not like people in Asia know 2 football players in Europe. Despite what you say, and despite not one quote or even action from the player suggesting he would like to leave, he has dominated the footballing news for the last week. He's easily the most marketable player in the PL now and he's only 24 and playing for Spurs. If/when he goes to Real he'll be a superstar.

Asians love the Premier League. Bale is known out here definitely.

Mirror going with the story that Levy is playing hard ball. No quotes though, more makey uppy stuff again methinks but at least it's positive

That Mirror article is just using the same rumours and Marca article that everyone else is using. Until we hear something official from Bale or Spurs, it's not happening as far as I'm concerned.

Im fukn sick of all this Bale transfer sh1te. Its selling newspapers though I'm sure it's not going to stop til it is sorted one way or the other.

Who the fcuk do RM think they are. I'm also sick of all the fools saying he should go or should not be prevented from joining Madrid. THFC have to do whats best for the club.

If and when Bale submits a transfer request things will be different, it will be about getting the best price. Until that happens Spurs don't have to do anything.

Sometimes Im pissed off with the stubberness of DL but I am sure he will do the best for the club on this. Hopefully Bale will be signing a big fat renewed contract with us soon and all will be calm.

On a positive note, great to see us spending some money early and hope Soldado will soon be in training with us.

Levy will do right by us here. He's a shrewd seller. We'll get very top dollar for Bale. What we do with the money is what will define the next three seasons for us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭DubPerryman

I've always been on the 'keep Bale' side of the fence, but if an offer of 95 million POUNDS comes in, I think it would be wiser to sell. After all, he's a football player... he can get injured, lose confidence (hypothetical I know), but £95m is very real.

I'd love to know how much Real Madrid or Spurs think they can make from the marketing of Gareth Bale's image. Apparently, Barcelona have paid off the Neymar fee (approx €50m) on shirt sales already (ref: Twitter). If this is true, then maybe Spurs are fully justified in looking for over £100m for Bale?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SuprSi

I agree, anything near £100 million or £60 million plus a couple of players (Di Maria & Coentrao keep being mentioned) makes complete sense. Reinvest the £60m in 2 world class players and instead of Bale, we have 4 new players plus Soldado, Paulinho & Chadli. That changes us from being a good team with an amazing individual to an excellent team with plenty of options and strength in depth.

    Lloris
    Walker - Kaboul - Verts - Coentrao
    Paulinho - Dembele -Sandro
    Lamela
    Di Maria
    Soldado

Probably pipe dream stuff, but can you imagine that squad? That midfield would rival the best (if not beat it on paper at least) in the league. If something like that were possible, much and all as I'd hate to see Bale go, I wouldn't be hugely upset.

We will not be getting Di Maria and Coentrao in part exchange, that is newspaper fantasy, do not fall for it.

It's so difficult not to though!! I guess it's just there's so much of it at the moment, I think even more than when Modric was being hunted down and it's difficult to keep believing that Bale will stay here. I can only imagine what it must be like for Bale himself!

    Word on Twitter is:
As of last night, senior Spurs sources claimed no official, written bid for Bale from #RMCF. Levy still adamant 'not for sale'. Hmmm #THFC

So it's just papers pushing stories

No Lennon? you have just wiped out our most potent attackers from last season!!....Who is Lamela by the way???

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SuprSi

    Lamela plays for Roma and is a winger/striker who's better than Lennon;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Lamela

He'd be expensive though, probably somewhere around the £25 -30m mark, if he'd even come.

I just hope both parties can come to some sort of agreement by the end of the week and release a statement.

If only it was that simply.

Its hard enough to attract world class players at the best of times because they just aren't available but when you're not in the CL (or haven't been in it for several seasons) then its next to impossible.

So you have 1 option, pay the world class players shed loads of money instead, well... erh, we can't/won't do that either.

So what we will do is buy 1-2 players, good players, maybe even top internationals but to my mind we should have been doing that anyway without ever selling Bale and spending the resulting funds in the first place, In the end we will only spend 55-65% of the Bale proceeds, and the rest will eventually be absorbed into somewhere else and will never see the light of a transfer market ever again.

According to Nike, Barcelona sell on average 1.15m jerseys per season. At €80 a pop that's a surge of 625k shirt sales in one season. Could signing Neymar have caused that big a surge, even in Brazil?

On the same note, not hard to see why we're touring the far east, United sell a shed load of shirts over there, first Park Ji Sung and then Kagawa, football is such a capaitalist machine these days.. Bring back Lee Young Pyo!!;)

    Bring back Lee Young Pyo!!;)

No, never, not even once. Not for all the tea in China. Inaccurate racist joke intended.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Haha I remember him, a specialised left back who couldn't use his left foot :D Wasn't it the same with Timothy Atouba?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Actually, now that I remember it Atouba was left-footed as I remember that goal he scored against Newcastle where he was shown onto his right and he curled it past Given with his right foot.

Typical BS you'd expect from the Mail

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2380429/Gareth-Bale-pictured-London-Spurs-chief-Daniel-Levy-returns-Real-Madrid-talks.html
Although he has not submitted a transfer request, it is now becoming a realistic option if he wants to pursue his ambition of playing for the world’s biggest team.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,788 ✭✭✭White Heart Loon

Course, then there's the BBC who go with
"Gareth Bale: Spurs determined to reject Real Madrid interest"
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23490932

....lots of direct quotes and evidence to back it up as usual.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,788 ✭✭✭White Heart Loon

Then the Telegraph, who quote the Mirror as source
"Tottenham Hotspur reject Real Madrid's bid for Gareth Bale"
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/10208750/Premier-League-Transfer-Talk.html

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/tottenham-transfers-gareth-bale-set-2096459
WOW, they have some direct quotes from "friends of the Welshman" as their de facto source

Christ if we have been offered as has been suggested 86m stg then we have to sell. He is not worth that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,913 ✭✭✭Ormus

Christ if we have been offered as has been suggested 86m stg then we have to sell. He is not worth that.

I agree that he's not worth that, in the sense that he isn't as good as Ronaldo, and he will almost definitely leave next season if not this season, and it's unlikely that Madrid will pay much more than £50m next season.

But is £86m really worth £86m to us? What do we do with it? We can't attract world class players to replace him because we're not in the Champions League, we don't pay top wages, and we're a selling club which lacks ambition.

Keeping him would make us significantly more likely to qualify for the Champions League and the £25m or whatever that comes with it, and make a big step in our quest to become a regular top 4 club. In the long term that could be worth an awful lot of money to us.

Of course he might stay and we might still finish 5th. Or he might leave and we might still get 4th. It's not black n white.

Guys, here's my take on what's going on.

First let the papers do the sounding out. Second let Zidane - not part of the managment team - stoke the fire nicely to see what reaction he gets. Third, and this is the important bit, should the player react , then what's the bets they bid nowhere near what the papers are suggesting. I'm thinking in and around 50.

Now if Bale is getting good advice then he'll not to fall into this trap. Nobody at the club is reacting to this because they know whoever blinks first is done. Both the club and Bale know that he's going nowhere at that money. Sit tight is the key.

I have this image of Jim Whyte sitting in a caravan park up at the gates of Spurs Lodge waiting for a story to break.
Bet he's lost his access all areas since 'Arrys gone
