Have to admit, I'm getting nervous when checking the news lately for the media is relentless in their attempt to unsettle Luka. All this BS about Tottenhams No.1 target this season is to hold onto their best players!

The rhetoric from HR is that Levy will not sell as we are trying to build a squad to compete for honours... I can't help feel that once the right offer comes in Luka will be sold and Redknapp will use that as his excuse to head on down to Soho Square. Obviously a bid for €20 is a joke because as an asset he has more than doubled his value since joining Spurs for £16.5m, but if Citeh offer £30 will Levy look to double his money...??!

I think we really need to sign a top striker soon - hardly a revelation - surely we've had a shortlist since Feb-March?! Every bit of press I read refers to Luka at some point, we need to draw the attention away from the wee man... Sort it out lads, wheres the marquee striker, we've been waiting 18months!

30m for Modric and we'll sell? In a world where Jones and Henderson are worth 20m that makes no sense.
We lost Berbatov and Carrick because their contracts were within 2 years of expiring, and they had a strong hand. Following Campbell and Carr, we know that if a player is capable of running down his contract, the club will probably sell. Hence, I was posting last summer that the most important signings we could make would be to tie up our key players on long term contracts. Modric, Bale, Lennon, Dawson Huddlestone and BAE all signed long term deals last summer. Only stupid money would cause us to sell- €50m +. Settle.
Signing a striker isn't that easy. Suarez and Carroll got a lot of attention, and look good, but scored how many goals for Liverpool? I know Carroll was injured, but so was Defoe. Bent is a good striker, but was he a good signing for us at the time?
I will reserve judgement, but I reckon VDV is staying, in which case, we need a foil for him. Crouch and he worked together very well, so it might be a better version of the beanpole we're looking for.

I'm not too concerned (for a change).

HR and DL came out good and early and said there was no way we'd be selling are start players.

The only way I can see anyone going anywhere is if Man City come in and offer ridiculous money ..something in the region of 50M for Modric and 65M plus for Bale and if we get that much money then I'll get over it.

Has all gone quiet on the Leandro front?

To be fair you have to look at the financing of players to determine their cost/value. Jones and Henderson were both youth team players at their respective clubs, notwithstanding the investment in training a youth player the transfer fee is 100% profit.

Modric cost spurs £16.5m, straight line amortisation over the previous three years of his initial six year contract leaves his asset value to the club at £8.25m. So to sell for £30m means ENIC profit somewhere in and around £22m.

Sadly, I think that the current rhetoric of "I have spoken to the chairman, though, and he has assured me that he is not prepared to sell him under any circumstances." is being used to jack up his price.

I hoped Berb and Carrick would stay in their day too but I think if the player has the desire to leave he can work an exit. Berbatov refused to play for the team and destroyed morale....!

Hopefully I'm wrong, Luka is the silkiest passer of the ball we've had for years.

It took us ages to recover from sale of Carrick that time - 2008 was it?. We had the team (and especially he midfield) playing in a certain way and it was such a shame because we were on the cusp of something very very good at the time. In hindsight, we got decent money and carrick never really progressed all that much. Hopefully history wont repeat itself this summer.

none of our players would stick around when man utd come sniffing... and whose going to blame them? carrick has won a CL and 4 league titles, berbs has won 2 league titles and has scored almost a goal every other game for utd. We arent good enough for this calibre of player to stay more than a season or two unfortuneatly, esp if we aren't in the CL year in year out. last season is when we should have pumped money into a strike fore to compliment the talent we had in MF but alas we didnt and we are where we are....

I see 'the sun' has a story about Kaboul wanting to return to france and join Marseille for £8.5m

In other papers where also linked with Samba.

Drogba been mentioned again as part of a deal to take Modric to the bridge.

Yeah and the twat who wrote the Drogba/Modric story states that Modric is worth £15m!! He's obviously a Chelsea fan hoping to help his club to the purchase for a little as possible.

A lot of people mis interpreted that 15m. That is what Chelsea value Modric at in terms of the wages they are gonna pay him, not the transfer fee, which wasn't mentioned in the article.

Jeez, Gyan is only 25? He looks into his 30s!

Id be very sceptical about African players and their stated ages. Obefemi Martins was 18 when he played for Inter when he was at least 22 according to most commentators. Also Roger Milla 38 years old in Italia 90, they reckoned he even lied as he was a few years older.

Closing in on Leandro according to the mail.

the rumour mill has it that harry wants parker but levy dosent want to pay 8 million for a fella that age.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭gar

    Good man Levy,
Dont think we need him. Have Sandro, Modric, THudd in the middle of the park. Livermore could be a good squad player to blood.
If we lose Palacios, Niko, dos Santos, (and we should get rid of) Jenas, O'Hara, Bentley then yeah get him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,713 ✭✭✭2nd Row Donkey

Agreed - we need to shift at least 3 midfielders before we buy any others.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

Gio looks like he could go to Sevilla great move for him. Jeans bently and Keane attracting some interest from Jol and from QPR.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Good, in total that could fetch anywhere from £13 - £18m? And clear out a load of players we don't need. Palacios next for £10m and we're not far away from £30m!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,420 ✭✭✭electrobanana

just a thought lads...palacios is suppose to be in talks with napoli so maybe a player+cash deal to get cavangi could be on the cards? now that would be a great signing for us as that guy would defo give us 20 goals a season..what do you guys think?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

I like him. Had a good season and we'd get a good few of quid knocked off.

What a derisory opening offer that is from Chel$ki. It is the first of many offers that we will recieve for him now. There`s also talk that Drogba may be used as part of a deal to take Modric to Chel$ki in the papers.

its gonna be a long summer trying to hold onto modric. i wish clubs would just keep their hands off when a player is not for sale

In fairness, this was inevitable, and we have made such bids ourselves plenty of times..

Mind you Marin wouldnt be a bad replacment. Dare I say it with a years PL under his belt he could be even better ! Lets face it, we aint gonna say no to 35 plus million or close with Drogba. Marin would still leave us with change.
