    Hey everyone,

I'm cooking for a girl tomorrow night, and I have the Main course sussed.

However, I was thinking what to have for Starter, and I thought it would be a good idea to make one that is popular where she is from.

She's from Hamburg, and I tried to search the net for Starter recipes etc but I can't seem to find anything. Does anyone here have a clue as to which Starters are popular in Hamburg? Strange question, but sure someone may know.

If not, what Starter would you recommend before a steak dinner?

And also, what dessert would you recommend?

    Thanks.

    Hamburg!

Ohh-errr, well I can think of lots of German mains, but no real starters! And mainly Bavarian stuff.

Aldi & Lidl used to have great german sausages, but the range just isn't as good as it has been.

Maybe a salad - with pickled veg, peas etc.
Sauerkraut fried with lardons? Could serve with rye bread and mustard.
Fish seems to be pretty big - if you were near an Ikea, see if you could get some pickled herring/sill?

I just googled Hamburg Restaurants, here's a menu from the 'prestigous' Kempinski hotel.....scroll down....how does ox tongue or offal grab you? Probably a bit too meaty, seeing you are having steak for mains.

I think seafood is the way to go, as they do enjoy a lot of that in Hamburg. Any chance you could get some eel where you are?

More tips and idea's here http://www.traveldudes.org/travel-tips/you-shouldnt-leave-hamburg-without-trying-least-one-their-original-dishes/3161

I lived in Germany for a while and could never warm to their food at all....all that liverwurst and spatzel, mind you I do remember I use to buy a yummy slice of KwiebelKuchen (onion tart) at the trainstation in Stuttgart...that got me through some hungry times.

Best of luck with your dinner date!

Are you sure it's a good idea to try and make something from where she's from? If it's not something you've made (or eaten) before it'll be very difficult to make it taste authentic. When not make something local and novel for her instead?
