    Your comment is uncalled for.
Sangakara was also allegedly in for fixing his previous match. These are speculations and allegations which come to air when an unexpected twist comes to surface. So it comes with the good. Why act like a teenager and bother "trying to tell them". Enjoy the victory, its well deserved
Go on to the facebook page yourself and see so.. there's dozens upon dozens of posts calling it a fix. Me acting like a teenager for commenting on it? How exactly? Sour grapes on their behalf is what it is.

Yeah, I'm sure he regrets playing test cricket and winning the 20/20 world cup!

    No humility, sad to see.

he can win what he wants but nothing tops beating england....... at anything

I know highlights will be on but does anyone know if there will by any place to watch the Irish innings (and especially the post match commentary from the Sky sports team) in full anywhere?

Missed the live broadcast and would love to watch them cry!

No crying from the sky sports team at all. In fact, they seemed over the moon for the Irish. Even in their analysis, there was very little on England, the post mortem will come later when everything has died down. They were full of praise for Ireland (rightly so) without a hint of animosity or bitterness. So I wouldnt bother if I were you.

thats fair enough, I'm happy for you if that is your mindset, you must be over the moon! :) Enjoy your moment and look forward to facing India, I'm sure your team will do you proud once more.

As for Morgan, its looking more and more likely he will be joining up with England as an injury replacement. We could certainly do with him as well, the final 6 or 7 overs of our innings were where we truly let ourselves down. He would have been the right player to score quickly with his range of expansive shots at that time.

Because you have only won a group game, you have only attained 2 points, and you have a hell of a long way to go before you even think of a quarter final place?

You have also only played a team who (by admission here as an England and Kent fan) are very, very average at the 50 over version of the game, who are injury riddled, out of form, and fatigued from probably the most testing winter's cricket they have played?

A bit of perspective is needed, but I will say again I applaud the efforts and excitement your team has brought to the world cup today.

hahaha can you smell the sour grapes. typical english every time they lose excuse after excuse after excuse. even the clowns on sky sports were focusing on the mistakes england made etc. suck it up boys..

My Ireland to win bet at 10/1 is looking a bit unlikely now as there is no way Ireland are going to make 328 runs. :(

Love these posts from around noon......:D

wow - I've only just heard the result. I watched England storm to 100 this morning in the opening, and watched the start of Ireland's batting when it looked like it would be damage limitation. Cannot believe the ending. Well done Ireland.:)

I don't think he was making excuses.
He was belittling our achievement, but certainly not making excuses.

Don't really think it is sour grapes is it? They only just beat Holland the game before last, a team nowhere near as good as Ireland, they were beaten 6 - 1 in their last one day series against Australia. England are average at best in 50 over game. Dropped catch after catch and fielded and bowled terribly in this World Cup, thats not excuses thats facts.

Yes, acknowledged, but fact of the matter is that Ireland chased 328 with a 162 5th wicket partnership and won.

Indeed, so what would you consider not to be sour grapes? Would you like us to pretend England are, in fact, the greatest Cricket team in the world, that they played at the top of their game, in a faultless display, and didn't stink against Holland and didn't lose 6 - 1 in their last series? OK so, thats what happened.

No sour grapes and sorry if it came across that way. You can understand that as delighted as your fans were, I was as angry and frustrated!

Fantastic win for you and a really exciting run chase, as a lover of cricket I have no problem in admitting that.

However, saying that, England really were atrocious with the ball and in the field, and questions will be asked. We have fallen short in ODIs for a long time. Questions need to be asked, but I understand starting that debate in this thread wasnt the place.

Does this bring back the question of test status again? If we had done this 12years ago we'd have got it by now.

Yeah but I think Bangladesh's dire first decade of test cricket is the cause of so much skepticism towards the idea of any other associates being admitted.

It's a sad reality that Ireland are fighting for their future in the world cup, and not for admission into test ranks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭NWPat

Not until we set up a four day national league/tournament of some sort. I believe we are stronger in the 50 over game than bangladesh were when they got test status. It needs to happen soon if its going to.

Joxer dreamt they both agreed on Alan Lewis straightaway,
And that Dunlop, Duffy and O'brien were certainly to play
But tempers they began to rise and patience wearing thin
Simmons wanted Jonny Elder, Joxer, Dougie Goodwin

What an unreal result. I went to bed during the early stages of our batting (twas late over here) and I'll admit to not giving us a prayer.

Gutted I didn't see it but I'll be looking for a replay on Fox to watch/record. If more people cared about cricket it would be our nation's greatest sporting achievement imo.

I'm sure hes disappointed he couldn't play and pleased for Ireland, but thats probably not what you want to hear. Offer him the choice again now, after todays game, he will make the same decision, his ambition is to play Test Cricket, he can't do that with Ireland. If you recall, thats why Joyce played for England for a while. If he was playing Test Cricket for England, he would still be playing in blue not green in the one-dayers.

btw; i had a similar viewpoint a few years ago before i actually watched a game i tuned into the last world cup ireland were playing and thoroughly enjoyed it and have kept an eye on the ireland team and players ever since. i do think the test games can be a bit tedious alright though, the odi's are far from boring today being exhibit A

    and the question is raised....

How can Ireland develop as a cricketing nation and attain Test status if the top players continue to do the same as Morgan?

I would like to think that it will now be very difficult for the ICC for completely remove associates from the World Cup now given both Ireland's and the Netherlands performances at this tournament.

I dunno if the ICC would actually consider this but a two-tiered test system could be looked at. You could have us along with Zim, Bang, WI and possibly NZ considering these teams generally struggle against the top test teams over 5 days.

The lads need to kick on from this result, as great as it was. A couple of trouncings against India and SA would make for an anticlimax. Realistically, they'd need a performance even greater than that seen earlier to beat either of these sides so I think they'll be targeting the WI game. A loss against the Dutch would obviously be disappointing. 3 wins would give us a chance of progressing.

Irelands ?greatest result in their history.

Probably, certainly the most high profile one.

That was utterly amazing. I just come back from the ground. I'm going to cross-post what I posted on Irish poker boards

    Wow, my **** wow.
I'm near lost for words about what I saw today but I will try some general musings

Kevin O'Brien, god. Nothing else to say about him. If that doesn't win Irish sports personality/performance or whatever I have no idea what will.

Tickets in cost 100 rupee, less than 2 euro :)

I pretty converted every Indian sitting beside me to become an irish fan. The 2 of us were only white people in the stand, that's what you get going with the cheap seats.

There is going to be about 100 photos uploaded of me on facebook that I will never see as local guys kepts wanting to take pics with me all day. I've no idea why. I must have posed for 25 pics after the match ended

Kevin Peterson, lol, wtf was that shot.

I at 1 stage was giving the over under at 40 overs until we were bowled out. That has got to go down as the greatest comeback in Irish sporting history. I'm being told we were 400-1 at one stage.

If anyone has access to news channel called Nexus 24/7, have a watch out for match report. They interviewed me after the game as I was leaving the stadium. I probably didn't make the slightest bit of sense but it would be funny to see.

On down side, **** you ICC and your near nazi like regulations. No bags, cameras, water anything allowed in. They didn't offer a store room so my co-traveller, had to get taxi back to our place and dump our bags off and return because of the corporate bull****. You couldn't bring any liquid into the ground, not even water or Pepsi, you know 1 of the main sponsors of the tournament. It's the sporting equivalent of flying, trying to make your life as miserable as possible. I would have captured so many awesome pics today if I was allowed.

Oh well, nothing could put a dampner on today. Simply 1 of the best days of my life. I really haven't fully taken it all in.

I really hope it came across like it felt like in the stadium. Never much of a cricket fan but today I'm converted for life.

Ok. Can we please ignore the people coming on here purposely trying to stir it up?

What we have to focus on is that, regardless of what form they're in, we beat a full ODI team and our biggest rivals (in all sports).

After everything the country has been through in the last year could we not all just be happy for the biggest day in the history of Irish Cricket?

The funny thing is, the kind of person who says that about cricket tends to be a staunch fan of Manchester United - who, as a footballing side, are terribly boring and awful to watch. But they know no better
