I think the celebrations of Brian Lenihan's demise are somewhat premature. While the tallies only give him around 15%, when 20% is needed for a seat, he has a running mate who will give him around 1.5%. The other candidates likely to be there at the end - Dennison and Nulty - are too far behind at 8.5% to catch Lenihan unless they scoop up all of the transfers.

Would be 80% confident that Lenihan will hold seat.

This thread seem premature, I'd say he has a good chance of holding his seat yet.

How did people vote this guy back in? Who are these idiots? Seriously, more than 1 in 7 people put a 1 beside that fool's name. That's scary!

Perhaps it was people who looked beyond the braying for blood of the mob and recognised his love of country, party and commitment. All qualities worth recognising, regardless of how one views his performance or FF in general. (I would have given him my number one, without hesitation, had he been in my constituency.)

Thread title edited to something more accurate. Though arguably I could say Lenihan has the last seat without a fight but went for something more neutral.

Hopefully people won't be mislead now.

Love of party is not relevant or a quality and should be of no interest whatever to the average voter. The tribalism of FF is at the root of much of what is wrong about them.

Ah, to be fair, tribalism is something all the parties suffer from. There are Labour/SF/FG/FF/Green households all over the country.

Thread title changed? I thought it was a bit of a premature ejaculation.

Newstalk reporting he is prob safe as 5th and 6th candidates have too few votes.
PS: Brendan Smith was the cheese guy and he also looks safe

He did his best and his best was ****. I hope he does the decent thing and opts for public health care.

Of course love of party is relevant, the alternative is to have party members driven solely by self-interests. What is of concern is where love of party always takes precedence over the national interest. (IMO that's what happened with Brian Cowan, it was the party first, second and third. We all suffered as a result.)

I did suggest that love of country should come first, then love of party. :)

Not in the first sentence, when you suggested only one alternative. You said "the alternative" was "self-interested people" ignoring the third, and best, alternative.

Very sad about Lenihan, very sad about Hanifan.

We should all be afraid of what Fianna Fáil will look like without their good people on the front bench.
If that's supposed to be FF's 'good people' I'd be terrified to see what their bad ones are like.

He is a disaster as a politician. As Finance Minister he uttered absolute garbage and deserves to lose his seat. He has some brazen neck to even seek re-election.

Most of us are afraid of how bad FF are with these so called good people. Im sure that without the ones you claim are good FF will still be something you and your ilk will still find reasons to vote for

Why would he (or anyone for that matter) who has private health insurance or enough money, opt for public health care? If you can afford to go privately then I think you should rather than put extra pressure and strain on the public system? More often than not the best hospitals have a public private mix so you access the same health care professionals.

Actually, I think it'd be a good idea for all TDs to have to use public health care so they can get some perspective on what it's like before ruling on cuts for it.

My list of priorities were, and remain, very plain, see my earlier post below. A politicians duty is, or a least should be, first to country, then to (all) constituents, then to party. IMO when the chips were down, Brian L put duty for country above all else, even his health. Contrast that with Brian Cowan, whose only concern was "the party" - and to hell with everyone else.

Of course tribalism plays a role, it is part of what we all are. It is where the role played by tribalism is excessive, or against the common good that it is a problem. I have never voted for FF, because they always "looked after their own" - at the expense of everyone else. That is what makes Brian Lenihans commitment all the more laudable.
