Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have attached a usb adaptor to my desktop, the netgear wg111t. However periodically the internet stops working:

I was wondering what could cause this? It doesn't seem like wireless zero configuration like in vista?

I've tried netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wireless Network Connection"

it could be, and is likely to be the adapter anyway, and not the OS. Other than that, idk. I've been drinking. But as a matter of habit, I do not like USB Wireless dongles. Do not trust them. PCI/PCIx. Thats the way to go.

I think it is the adaptor, it doesnt flash as quickly when it times out, might be it chocking on data or something. :/

Im not a fan of them really. We had the same problem at work where we needed Quickbooks to have a constant connection, but on the USB Dongles it would drop several times a day; most annoyingly in the middle of transactions. After that all you can do is reboot the program and wait a few minutes. Given my choice tal I would always install an expansion-card wireless option. Either PCI/PCI-x. They house all their own processing and dont need to send data back and forth through the USBus to interpret networking information. And since they don't borrow clocks from the CPU, you're not going to drop if some other program chokes your processor. I've never had a signal drop on a card and these run in many cases cheaper than the USB options in the first place, which are really marketed as a layman's wireless solution.

Thanks, was just checking, wonder are there any shops that have them around dublin for cheap. I am just using it this week or 2 anyway, until I get wired.

The IP address you're pinging is on Google's network and is likely several hops away - the packet loss could be happening anywhere between your desktop and Google's rack. To test the wireless connection between your desktop and router, you should ping your router's ip address.

Ah ye that's true, just using it as an example, the whole connection freezes and the lights on the usb stick change, bad throughput or something

Are you certain its not your broadband? Is there another device that isnt having these issues?

Maybe run the same ping tests to the router? (pre submit edit: as snowbat already mentioned)

The Lan side of your network (be it wired or wireless) is normally the least likely to give you problems like packet loss. (not impossible mind)

No other machine has this problem, and I tried this usb on another network now, same deal. Just the product being bad even though it said it was good for gamers etc. :S
