Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

D'ya remember thanking this post? :D This looks like an early 80s Fiat, I think there's a pic of the mustard coloured Land Rover [?] on here, was it for use in guarding/transporting explosives?

Out of interest, what's 'the squad'? My uncle worked in traffic in L/M and they were the ones who drove the white cars with the blue stripe up here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,195 ✭✭✭goldie fish

Traffic were known as the squad by the truckers round these parts, who frequently dealt with them on weighbridges.
You had more to fear from the "squad" than the ordinary Navy renault 4.
The Squad were usually the ones raiding the pubs too.

It looks like a Ritmo, they would have been mid 80s. Must have been a specialist purpose. No "Garda" on door.

I do know that there was a Garda calendar about 2 years ago showing all the old vehicles can't remember who produced it (think it was St. Raphaels) but my dad was in one of the pics :p

i hope this might help about explaining why they change colour, i work in telecoms and i was in a garda barracks in dundalk doin a job i asked a traffic corps sgt why did they changed. he said the reason they changed from Blue to white in the 90's was studys showed that white was the most visable colour on car so they changed to white for saftey etc, Car companies today are not painting cars white as standard anymore if you want white you have to pay extra, so as in the Uk ,police forces looked for the next most visable colour on a car which is silver, and so garda cars will be silver from now on, as for why there is white new cars and why toyota won the contract, the sgt said after the scares with toyota last year, toyota had a **** load cars parked up in the Uk Factory which inclued white ones and we the state got very good deal price wise due to this.
He seamed to know what he was talking about when he told me so id say its true

There is some elememt of truth to the selection of white being more visible but the reflective stripes (and the chevrons on some cars) were also added at the same time. The transition to white (as opposed to shades of blue) and the Garda livery really boosted the image of the force in my view. White is in the Top 10 most popular car colours in 2010 - so I don't think white is a special order! Silver is the number 2 most popular colour (UK figures).

In regard to silver - I have heard that some police forces use it for the traffic corps because as a very popular colour (and not white) it is less conspicuous meaning that marked cars can work through the traffic seeking offenders without being very obvious. Howvever, some forces (City of London?) have adopted it for all vehicles.

Toyota didn't suffer much after the scares a year ago. I'm sure they just put in a competitive tender. Certainly they may have been keener with price because of the scares and when the public see law enforcement using a car brand it does give it an endorsement.

The only reason for the silver ones is down to the fact Toyota couldn't supply enough white ones. Thats from people in the depot.

    Fact....!! No other reason.

    No policy decision made yet

The main reason the UK went silver is that unlike here, they don't flog their fleet until it is worthless, they sell them on after a relatively short period. Some forces , I believe, even lease.

Silver is easier to sell on than white.

Did the same people in the depot explain how the GS ended up with Subaru foresters?

I wasn't asking. But I'm sure there was a reason. It's not like they were widely issued though.

You all realise this informations primary source is a car dealer. So if you had to assess how good it was?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭BrianD

So silver is the new black then.

I'd imagine the resale value of any police car is pretty low regardless of colour - outlines of the decals, hole in the dashboard ...

Hopefully there's someone in the depot who thinks this is the future. Excellent decal even for differentiating TC from Regular.

That's the most rational explanation. Do you know if it's the first time this has happened? I saw what looked like a silver-grey 08/09 traffic Opel estate on the M1 on Saturday.

Which part of the M1. There is a white Vectra estate based in Santry.

It was around Dunleer I think, north of the Boyne bridge anyway. It looked kind of off-white, could well have been white reflective strips on the bodywork giving that impression though.

There is one silver traffic estate insignia floating around I think

    ta-da!

lovely car i'd love to have a go.. we gots the '11 avensis which is pokey, smooth and comfy but dont see it being as hard wearing as the mondeos were...

i'd heard the traffic cars were silver as just another differentiation between them as the chosen ones and us mere mortals

Got a close look inside the New Avensis in Cork West today. How long have you had the PTT button on the wheel?
Simple, but genius. Well done to whoever finally put it in place.

Ah that would be since we got the avensis.

Since tetra we have a hands free type system. In every other car it's a stalk with PTT on top. That's great as it stays in place meaning you can talk and steer a bend and can let go at any stage and you dong have a mic falling all over the place etc.

Seems the new avensis is a pain as you can't talk and turn any sharp corner as you have to let go of the button to rotate the wheel more than half way......if you can follow that

  • Registered Users Posts: 319 ✭✭Locust

+1 Using that PTT button on anything more than a 90 degree turn surmounts to driving without reasonable consideration and a hilarious radio transmission!

Not necessarily, left hand radio -right hand wheel is easier than pressing the feckin ptt on the wheel while turning it... I reckon those stalks with the ptt on top of em we got when the tetra came in first were the best option, silly looking but practical

Maybe use a knee-switch? Your legs aren't going to be flailing about too much no matter how wildly you're swinging the steering wheel, and both hands remain fully engaged on the wheel.

    NTM

We don't drive autos like in the states though.....so they would be impractical on manual shift cars as you are moving both legs.

The reason some Garda cars are silver is because the manufacturer didn't have enough white at the time to fulfil the order.

If that is the case, considering white is the most popular car colour in the world. I imagine someone is with out a job with a blunder like that !
