Intergrating a hedge

I'm thinking of putting a row of laurels (about 110-120 of them) alongside my hazel/whitethorn hedge so that it will look a bit more respectable from the road. The hedge is west facing and the laurels would get the sun in the afternoons. I've cut back the old hedge by about 18/20" & hoping to plant the laurels as close as I can to the old hedge so I can see up & down the road when coming out of the driveway.

My question is would they take off or take forever to grow been so close to the old hedge?
