I liked the show tonight:D I thought it was very clear, easy to follow and i really do think 30 mins is just long enough ;)

I did my best. Ive not presented before.
For what it's worth, I think you did a good job. If you want constructive criticism, I'd say that Kristen is more natural on camera than you are, you're a little uncomfortable or unrelaxed yet, but your reviews were better than the other two's by a long way.
Take tips from her on how to look more relaxed and your reviews will come together very well I reckon. Good job, hope it becomes a regular thing, only then can it improve.

Jesus. I did my best. Ive not presented before.

See, that's the problem with forums. It's hard to see both sides of the emotional divide through a text only interface. My post wasn't intended to be negative. It was intended to be constructive. You guys have raised the bar - compared to Drive, you guys are actually on fire. I'm only saying what I said much earlier in this thread again, and what other users echoed - we didn't want to see another Karl Tsignidnigigidoes just calling out facts and figures without his own personality coming on board. All the other stuff is the fault of the production team IMHO, not you. You're all clearly in this new job for a reason, because you're good at what you do. But if you come on a forum, and ask what we think, be prepared for our answers too :pac:

I think the show has great potential, and the presenters do too. I don't know which one of them you are unfortunately, so sorry if I said some things which may not have seemed pleasant. But I suppose it's the other downside of asking people what they think, not everyone's going to say what you want to hear - but please please please try to see through the stuff I wrote as not being a personal attack on you, but more as what I personally thought was partially wrong with the programme, and also try to see that I think as a homegrown production of cars, it's the very best we've ever had yet.

It was about as direct a personal attack as they get.
Do you really think this is a fair thing to say to a fellow poster, trying to do a job?

As I said in my reply earlier, I have no idea which one of the presenters is the poster here, so I'm not specifically attacking anyone. I'm giving my opinion on a TV show.

I'm the guy who needs a bigger jumper.

Fair play for putting something new and home grown on TV. Only managed to watch the bit with the female presenter on.

Any chance you could do a second hand car review, like the one they have in the Sunday Times? We're in a recession y'know. Most of the talk on this forum is about the 'aul yokes people like me buy.

Thanks for that - Kirsteen is a tv presenter and an excellent one, i'm not and judging by PaintDoctor's comments I wont be for much longer! I'm sure he will do a great job of replacing me!

Don't take it to heart, I'm one thicko behind a keyboard. It's my opinion, there's plenty of others out there. There's a whole site of us on here! I stand by what I felt, but I am sorry if I made you feel bad, that wasn't what I set out to do - it's funny how choosing the wrong words to express something in a text only interface can actually end up sounding extremely harsh - maybe if you met me in public and I said the same things, they wouldn't seem even half as bad. Keep up the good work though, it was actually great not watching 5th Gear, or Top Gear and hearing normal Irish Prices and normal Irish voices for a change.

Any chance of you and your team doing roundups of cars too? I'd love to see a roundup of things like the iQ/Smart type cars against the mad flurry of electric cars to see which are more practical from an economy and long term end of life carbon footprint point of view.

Good start to the series, best of luck for the rest,
Hopefully for the next series a segment on importing cars, a 2nd hand car segment as mentioned earlier and a consumer advice segment may be interesting..

Hope theres not a lot more diesel cars reviewed as the show shud be changed to Diesel Power(yes i know they are the largest market segment at the mo. but it would be nice to escape the everyday hum drum misery of small diesel cars)

Hope there is no silver Avensis diesel review :D

There is no point back pedaling mate, you were fairly 'honest' about me - I'm a big boy (too big for my jumper obviously) so I can take it. I just happen to use boards all the time so its hard to avoid seeing the comments. That was my first ever time on tv and I get an awful lot better.

As for "pat the plank behind the wheel" - I'm not sure how calling me that in person would help.

Don't take it personally mate, an awful lot of keyboard warriors round here. Your first time on TV and you were still miles better than the 'Dainty Little Bugger', Ryan Tubridy! :D

If you think your criticism is bad, then take a look at the television forum on any Friday night to see what the DLB has to put up with! :D:D:D

Enjoyed the show, keep up the good work!

    Mmmmmm, toasty bum.

Aston part was poor, X3 guy was the most natural talking about cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

I didn't back pedal at all, I said I stood over what I felt when watching. I did try to make you feel a bit better, but maybe if you're looking for only positive feedback a forum isn't the best place? I'm no expert, and don't claim to be, but I am a motor show TV addict. I'll sit down and watch a TG re-run even if I've seen it a dozen times, just cause I love cars, and love TV, and love the combination of both. I just gave my incidental opinion on what I thought could be improved, based on that experience and nothing more. I'd probably have been delighted if you spent the whole 30 minutes talking about the Aston - but that's the big kid in me wanting to play with cars I'll never have.

Reading back on my post, it's obviously - regrettably - harsh in the language used, but I also said this :
But I did like the show. It just seems lack lustre, maybe it's because it's the first episode - but I think it actually looks like people are trying far too hard to be something they're not rather than the show itself being at fault.

Let your personalities shine through - from our chats here it's obvious you have some, so relax and enjoy it, and the viewers will be more engaged too.

I genuinely do like ths show. I'm just trying (In my own shocking way) to say that if you have a laugh doing it, we'll laugh along watching it and be sucked in through the TV too.

I've had a pretty horrendeous week offline, so apologies for letting that into my posts on here.

I caught the first half only, thought it was decent.

The segment on the Passat was pretty fair, it didn't go down the route of worshipping the car just because VW let you review it.

Kirsteen's toasty bum is definitely an asset for the show! pacman.gif

So, do the three of you get together to review each car, and come up with a script, or do you do them individually?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭Satanta

I enjoyed the show. I'd actually be disappointed if you tried to make an Irish version of Top Gear. The reviews were fine, and the Aston bit was enjoyable. Although, the one criticism I would have is that i didnt like the dark vignette around the screen in some sections.

    Otherwise it's a thumbs up.

    Hi

And congrats on the show, definetley a keeper, looking forward to the next episode.

My only gripe was the opinion the ANYBODY would pick an X3 over a 5 Touring. Or an X3 over anything really, pointless car!

Well theres no accounting for taste eh

    All the best!

i liked the show as its a change from the norm, one thing i will say is, while you where talking about the aston with you hand over your mouth, you looked like you would have jumped a mile if somebody sneezed. you also asked about 4 questions about how the aston martins have evolved, maybe some facts and figures would have broke up the repatative questions a little better, i mean we know nothing about the newest astons other than what the other guy told us.

Looking forward to next weeks show.

Good to see an Irish motoring show on the tv!

Only saw the second half, found the Aston thing very interesting, thats the kind of thing they'd never show on TG, or if they did Hammond would end up glueing himself to one of the cars or something. I think Irish people get overly critical of other Irish people when they are on tv, for a first timer I thought he did well. A couple of the questions were a little repetitive, but I wouldn't criticise the presenting.

Caught the end of the X3, what a hideous car :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭Seán_B

    Good work on the show.

It is very difficult to pull off a motoring show on a restricted budget, and any criticisims should take that into account. People have mentioned top gear, but that is no longer a motoring show and it's 6 show series runs are laughable. I think fifth gear is the standard to be compared to and hopefully if you get good reviews, TV3 will increase your funding and move you to a prime slot next season, allowing you more freedom. So keep up the good work.

    My comments on the show,

Nice camera work and good mixing of practical info regarding the cars.
Presenting style was natural and not laden with punchlines al a top gear.
All the presenters were well turned out which adds proffessionalism to the piece - important I feel for a start up show in order to be taken seriously.
(Although I'm not sure about Kirsten's pink running top)

On the passat piece, one of it's strengths is the technology crammed into the cabin yet it was glossed over. You could have easily had 3mins on the interior fit out, various improvement over the previous model. Over the series, I'm sure you'll have some luxurious and high tech interiors and personally I feel that providing the viewer with the feeling that they are exploring the interior could be a strong segment in a car's review.

I truly hope you are sucessful in your endevour and perhaps you might even add some motorcycle into the mix!!

    Seán.

    Well done lads

There will always be a few quibbles and complaints but it is a new series and if given the time ye will work them out

Glad to see cars being reviewed on Irish roads and there were a few interesting camera angles, I particularly liked the shot where it looked like the camera was mounted on the wing mirror looking into the car

Would echo the comments about more interior shots, the inside of the car is important too as that is where we spend most of our time

But ye will get the balance right and it was a good start and hopefully it keeps going

Missed it last night, but I'll definitely pick it up online later this evening.

For what it's worth, presenting is a pretty tough gig. I used to do a show around the country and even in front of small crowds, with a script I knew backwards, I'd still be uber nervous!

As for Paddy, worry not. Remember when Martin Brundle gave up driving for presenting on ITV? Pardon the pun but it was a bit of a car crash! And now... His expertise is a vital part of the coverage of F1 and he's extremely comfortable in front of the camera.

I didn't have much of an opinion on you in the show(i.e. it was grand but not particularly noteworthy either way, and only a first episode) but jaysus your attitude on this thread stinks.

PD posted an honest, well qualified opinion. It upset you, he tried qualify it even more to show that he was being constructive, meant well and thought you did a better job than any previous irish motoring TV show.
Instead of being mature or gracious, you sounded petulant.

I thought the same, all she did was say there was thousands of euro worth of options. Eh, what are they?! No car show focuses enough on the car interiors, everyone knows what a car looks like on the outside, some serious detail on an interior is what everyone wants IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭cjt156

Have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised. I was expecting it to be awful but it was actually pretty good. Far from perfect but good nonetheless. Car bores are always going to find fault; they want more specific info, reviews on THEIR favourite car and whatever - this is all stuff easily found online. You can't please everyone. Apart from the Aston segment none of the cars interested me, but I still appreciate the effort. And the toasty bum....

Hardly matters, as no-one will buy them. In fact, even that bum-toasting Highline is way above the spec most Irish buyers will cough up for.
