I was out with a few mates for some pints tonight. The usually pub chat was had. However the question came up as to where/what is the oldest pub in Ireland. A few places around the country were mentioned but I think that was just lads making wild guesses. So does anyone actually know?

seans bar seems to have been the oldest (athlone) dating from 900AD but it turns out its a hoax:

The Brazen Head in Dublin is I think pretty much officially considered it, but there are claims that The Gateway (now An Réalt Dearg) in Cork is the actual one.

Definitly the brazen head... I actually think that that's part of their slogan "oldest pub in Ireland", or something to that affect. I suspect it's to lure the "Irish" Americans in the door!

They do serve nice pints tho!

Pretty certain the Brazen Head is Dublin's oldest pub. Not sure if it's the oldest pub in Ireland though.

Not sure how long it's been operating as a pub, but the Kytler's Inn in Kilkenny dates itself to the 13th century. And it feels olderthan the Brazen Head and the like.

    /Facepalm

    That article is fake...

A few years ago the owners of the brazen head and the owners of means bar were both on the gerry ryan (I think) show one morning having a back and forth making their case and the owners of the brazen head were forced to admit that Sean's Bar was the older of the two.

The wattle and mud on the wall is legit, it was studied by the national history museum when it was found and the certification from The Guinness Book of World Records awarded.

    Sean's is the winner.

So I raided a few traveler halting sites for broken bits of machinery and fishing rods and bits of ****e to stick up and had the place gutted and re-done in 1990 to look like an old Irish pub. Some of the lads got a bit enthusiastic, I had to convince them that urinating on the walls to give it that “old Irish pub” atmosphere was out of the question. In any case, during the renovations the oxygen tank with Woody Harrelson’s face on it blew up there – so we just turned it into the fireplace.

That's probably the oldest gay bar or something.
The brazen head is Irelands oldest pub, 99% sure:D

So we have a pub in Roscommon which is possibly the oldest in Europe (as claimed by many experts) and yet the Dubs still try to claim that they have the oldest pub in Ireland! Typical Dublin arrogance

It's Sean's Bar. The Brazen Head might be the oldest pub in the Pale :pac:

Oh right, I was confused by the fact that they list their address as Westmeath on their website.
