Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Backup software - Nortons Ghost??

    Hi Guys,

I have some very important work and college files on my laptop which would cause me huge problems if I ever lost them for any reason. I do copy files (when I remember to) on to a portable hard drive but I'm looking at finding a better and more structured solution.

Can anyone advise me on Backup Software? I had a look on Amazon a while ago and they have a product from Nortons, called Nortons Ghost. Is this a good product or are there better products out there?

    Thanks, Mrs D

You should look into MozyHome/Carbonite and Acronis True Image.

you might consider an online storage solution like dropbox as well as your external drive.See the recent stolen laptop thread.

What you're looking for you wouldn't need to make an 'image' of your hard disk if it's just a few files you wanted to back up.

But +1 for dropbox. Very handy and you can sync folders automatically do it. There's only 2GB worth of space but you can get more (Follow this link for an extra gig, http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056150693&highlight=dropbox+space).

    http://www.dropbox.com/

EDIT: Also it's free and secure.

    I use Acronis True Image.

Bought a 3 licence version for under 50 dollars at Christmas, and when my hard drive broke last month, i was able to retreive all my Operating System and data.

I think that the Acronis True Image might be the way to go as I need to copy 500GB+

Hmm. Ok yeah you may need a few hundred Dropbox accounts!

    Well there's also Clonezilla.

    http://clonezilla.org/

    Which is free too.

LOL :D:D I wonder who came up with the name, clonezilla, sounds like it could be a STI. Thanks chin grin for the advice and for making me laugh at the end of a fairly rubbish day :)

Ghost apps are more suited to taking backups every once in a while, not every few days...
They should be used to create a working image that you can restore to if you have issues with your PC, not as something to back up your movie collection with...

If you want to restore 1 single file, do you really want to go through the hassle of having to restore everything else in order to get it???

Why not just use something free like synctoy? Maybe buy a NAS/external drive and back up to that?
Synctoy has to be ran manually by default, but there are guides out there for automating it...

Don't forget to concentrate on documents you've created yourself, not downloaded. Movies, music - you can always get these again. Thesis, home movies, family pics,..... you get the idea !

Windows Live Mesh and a Live account will also give you 5GB of auto sync files/folders
