Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Crown wheel came off

Went to wear my Carrera yesterday, and the crown wheel popped off and rolled across the floor. I hardly every wear this watch, so it's a tad disappointing. Has anyone had a repair done like this, and might give me an estimate of cost? I'm dropping in to Keanes in Cork for an estimate tomorrow, but seeing as they're not the most inexpensive sales outlet, no doubt their repair service will be equally costly.

The crown? The windy uppy bit(technical I am today)? Sheesh that's a bit mad Ted. I have heard of it before though. If it's broken off in the crown then it's a little more involved, if it just unwound from the stem it shouldn't be much at all.

Looks like the shaft is literally broken, there's a bit inside the crown wheel, and a bit sticking out of the sticky out bit on the case. Oh well, will get them to polish and clean it while it's in I suppose. Cheers Wibbs!

They can usually dissolve away the bit lost in the crown itself, by soaking it overnight in alum or bleach of all things. Though if it's a steel crown I'm not so sure... If that works you don't have to stump up for a new crown and it being TAG would be pricey(I presume it's tag Heuer and not a vintage Heuer?). So that would be a replacement stem alone and the fitting therein.

If it's got any warranty on it I'd be hotfooting it back to the original shop TBH.

No warranty, and it's a very very occassional watch - I wear it a day or two per month, because of my work I usually have a paint encrusted Casio there instead. It's a modern TAG Heuer, but I bought it back in about 07 IIRC.

As much as I like Tag's designs, the quality control is pretty poor in my experience. I've had a Carrera Chrono that the chronograph stopped working on (within warranty thankfully) and an Aquaracer Calibre S that I sold on adverts which also developed a problem a few months later. Again, it was still under warranty thankfully. Add to that my wife's Alter Ego needs a new clasp, and it's only 3 years old. I would be expecting better from an expensive watch to be honest. These issues have really put me off buying another Tag in the future.

You're not the first I've heard say that Bogmanfan.

Just to update this in case someone googles for the same issue, I got the TAG repaired by the shop I bought it from - despite asking for goodwill due to the lack of use, I ended up paying full price. Repair was 140 Euro.

In house I believe, but the repair guy only visits once a week for the higher end watches, so it's possible he's TAG/Rolex/Breitling/Omega/etc trained. I'm just speculating though.

I bought my Carerra back in 2007. Within the year the tachograph bezel started moving freely. The Bezel was replaced under warranty. A bit later the watch stopped working altogether and was replaced under warranty except for the bracelet. Two years later the watch stopped working again (automatic movement froze) and Weirs charged €350 to repair it.
My mate also has the same watch and the main crown wheel came off his. Cost him €300 in Spain to fix it
