There was a player today that played with us that was the most overweight Cavan player in maybe ten years. Shocking to have him involved.

    Who is it??

Can he catch a ball and win a mark inside , if he can park him outside mc donalds for the week and wheel him down to breffni sunday :)

He tried running for a couple balls and looked like he was stuck.

Looks like it’s back to the way football was in my day 50 years ago or so.
Put the big unfit and overweight lad on the square and maybe he will upset the fullback line and it will lead to a goal. Bull in a china shop mentality.
Nice to see that football is progressing ha ha. You can’t bate the scientific approach.

Tierney is obviously the player. He has bulked up too much the last few years. Some were surprised he was recalled, as he wasn't that hectic with Ballyhaise last year

Kerry next week will be another step up. They were missing Crokes players and Clifford yesterday, and seemed comfortable against Tyrone.

The physical conditioning of seasoned division 1 sides like Monaghan, Dublin, Tyrone and Mayo among others is way ahead of where Cavan are at right now. I dare say a fair few Div 2 sides like Donegal, Armagh and Kildare are well ahead too. That will take some time for Cavan to address.

I think the county board are trying to address that with the employment of Andre Quinn. Graham has also spoken about how it takes at least 12 to 24 months to get a player up to the standard required.

    There’s a long road ahead.

Few things from yesterday. Apologies for the length of this, it's almost like therapy!!!

Really bad second half performance. Given the level of injuries that Galway had, I really feel we let two points slip, and if we had any hope of staying up we needed to beat Galway, Roscommon & Mayo.

I'll try to find to some positives first. Martin Reilly had a brilliant game. Galligan again (missed frees aside) bailed us out many times. Madden did well and Jack Brady kicked two lovely scores.

Otherwise, that was a poor performance. Cleaned out of it in the middle of the park. Any team can cut us open at will by running straight at us. Down in the McKenna cup could have had 2 or 3 goals only for Galligan to save us, and he did it again yesterday. I dread to think of what the Dubs, Monaghan or Kerry will do to us unless we tighten up sharpish. Not sure any of our full backs (or Clarke as sweeper) managed to get out in front of any of the Galway full forwards at any stage during the day.

There was also a ridiculous amount of positional changes throughout the game. We need a free taker. Couple of bad misses in the first half that had an impact. Young Smith (who did okay, and never went missing) missed a sitter to put us 6-2 up and that could have given us a nice platform. Instead Galway went straight up to make it 5-3 and then pegged us back.

I am sure Mickey Graham will improve things, but the frustrating thing for me is that not only have we not gone forwards, we have gone backwards. In 2016 we beat Galway at home to get promotion. Lots of lads from that performance either have stalled or look like they have gone backwards. I had genuinely high hopes that we were going in the right direction.

Back then we had finally managed a balance between a well organised defence and attack. Since 2017 we have been cut open again and again. McManus will be licking his lips for his trip to Breffni unless we can sort out our backs.

Worryingly, we lacked any sort of leadership when the game turned. We were only 3 points down during the second half and it might as well have been 33 for the lack of conviction. No one there to lift the team and build a fightback. I know the black cards had an impact, but a worrying trend continues for this side that once the chips are down, we don't have enough fight in us.

Fitness is an issue, and not just for the one lad mentioned. Some of our lads looked out on their feet after about 20 minutes. How it is possible for us to be second best for nearly every ball to a poor enough Galway side?

And finally, the ref was very poor for both teams. How can you get a black card for a bit of a tussle? How was the Galway lad who cleaned Thomas Galligan out of it after the whistle not even carded? Mc Veety was walking a fine line and Clarke could have easily gotten the line (he should have been booked before he was black carded).

Right, that's it. Not really looking forward to next Sunday to be honest, unless Mickey can work miracles!!!

    My 2 cents

We were incredibly wasteful, especially in the first half.

The strategy of pushing up zonally on kickouts didnt work.......the keeper always had options and was able to find them with ease......and it didnt change until the last 5 minutes

Either push up man to man, push up extra men, or drop back and give them the kickout....pushing up more men suffocated them in the last few minutes....that should have been done earlier.

We fell apart in the second half when cards were being dealt out......Martin Reillys was very harsh, as he was being fouled.....I didnt see what Gunner did, but Clarkes was just stupid.....he just blocked a runner.....no need for it, especially from an experienced player.

McVeety was well shackled.......Argue needs to fill out a bit and impose himself physically.

And why is Sean O Shea getting all the credit for sideline kicks, when Jack Brady done the same

We look small relative to other Div 1 teams......not just in height, in build as well.....not much we can do there in the short term

Why is Brian Magee not on panel this year? He might not have shot the lights out but done reasonably well for his first year on the Senior panel. He is a player that would have improved with more training at that level. Good size and has some power

New manager, a few new players, some only returning and we’re playing the top teams in the country - I think people need to get a bit of perspective.

Things aren’t going to turn around in a weekend and there was a lot of false optimism last week - we were playing an All Ireland semi finalist.

I think it’s going to be a tough league campaign and year but we’ll have to stick with the management long term.

Conroy a good free taker if free centrally. If at an angle struggles.

Hopefully Cavan can put in an improved performance on Sunday that offers some optimism for the remainder of the season. Should be a decent crowd in Breffni to see how we fare versus the kingdom. They are a long way from full strength so there is opportunity. Cavan certainly need to uncover a greater goal scoring threat sharpish.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,125 ✭✭✭piplip87

    Just a quick summary

Poor decision making. Lost two kickable frees to try and gain a few yards. Didn't want to attack in the second half. Too long build up play. Gave away far to many frees in the first half even though 2 of them where in no way frees.

The first half is one of the best Half's of football I've seen a Cavan team produce in years. Direct running and kicked some fantastic scores. Don't know what happened in the second half but there's we put it up to one of the best teams in the country for 60 minutes. We need another improvement for Mayo.

Overall more to be positive about this evening than there has been in a few years

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭quidel

In fairness, it was a great display of free taking by Sean O’Shea, as a lot of the frees conceded were from out around the 45m line. They didn’t cut Cavan open through the centre as had been a worry in previous games. The loss of two players with injury at a vital stage in the second half did have an unsettling effect on Cavan and Kerry grew more into the game as a result. The direct football which was reaping dividends in the first half slowly transformed into the slow laboured play we are far to accustomed to. Cavan squandered possession unnecessarily midway through the second half and Kerry had the quality and experience to take advantage of these mistakes. A fine game of football given the conditions for the neutral.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,065 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

The difference between the two teams was the free taker.

We gave an exhibition of scoring first half but in the second half we were nervous and it showed. Too many unforced errors and Kerry saw that and pushed up and pressured us.

Still, considering this is Mickey’s second game in charge and considering it was Kerry, I was delighted with what I saw.

Kerry men around me were raving about Madden, Galligan & Holla.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭quidel

Cavan’s football in the first half was top quality and the ball stuck well when delivered inside long and early. A joy to watch. Credit to the inside men who looked confident and lively. The nervousness exhibited in the second half though is obviously something that will take management time to hopefully eradicate. Rather surprisingly some of Cavan’s more senior players were badly caught by indecisiveness in this period. Pleny to be positive about despite the end result. Hopefully the injuries picked up are not significant as Mayo are going to present another big challenge. As Mattie used to say, “You win or you learn”.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,166 ✭✭✭rrs

Cavan were very good first half. Madden was a great outlet, couple of great scores from play and a good free. Jack Brady was doing OK too.
Ciarán Brady was attacking well aasusual.
Kerry obviously targeted him and Mcveety in the second half. They will probaly be doubfuk for Mayo next week.

Kerry stepped it up in the second half more hungrier. Cavan need everyone fit, as being realistic they look quite average without McKiernan for Div 1.

    Very Poor stuff .
Graham too slow to make changes.
Although those subs that came on added no value.

What were you expecting with a manager in his second league game and a panel with a number of new starters against one of the top teams in the country?

Yes we need to win matches but it’s a learning curve and there was certainly plenty of positives I thought today.

You have the likes of McKiernan, Gerry Smith & Caoimhin O’Reilly still to come into that team.

Sounded like a great first half performance but we ran out of steam in the 2nd half .
Is Conor moynagh out injured ?

I think there's more to the Moynagh thing than meets the eye. Out of the country last week but was named to start, then not in the squad at all today. Doesn't really add up.

Some people losing their minds about this result, it's fairly standard for what Cavan have become in the last number of years. Competitive and capable of putting together periods of excellent football against top teams but lacking that extra bit of class and belief to get us the scalp.

Hopefully given time and some luck, Mickey can get the team to that new level. Freetaking needs to be sorted out. Galligan has a score rate of maybe 1/4 or 1/5 I would guess. Simply not good enough even for long range attempts.

Moynagh had flagged last week that he was to be out of the country. Who knows when he got back?

Free taking, as I said, was the difference between the teams today. Kerry’s O’Shea didn’t miss a beat whereas Galligan missed two and Reilly kicked another two short. Every score counted in the second half and we needed to get our frees over.

I thought that Conroy had been named to take the frees but that was incorrect.

Kudos to Conor Madden. He’s flying inside.

Cavan were excellent in the first half, and tired in the second....wind seemed to be more of an issue in the second half that the first

Would have been further ahead at ht, if it wasnt for all the soft frees blown by the Longford referee.

Kerry No 4 should have got the line for a high tackle round the neck, and there wasa black card tackle on Pierce Smith that he missed as well.

Holla was exceptional and McVeety done a great job at CB....until both went off injured.

Plenty of positives, its just a pity its Mayo next week......they seem to be flying under Horan, with a great win in Omagh

Once we're keeping in games though its positive. Like I've seen naysayers on here and on other forums but I saw a lot more positives yesterday than negatives.

Its the manager's second League game in charge and second game against one of the best teams in the country and it was the best 35 minutes we've played in a long time.

People would say there aren't many players to come into that team but I'd disagree - Killian Brady, Gerard Smith, Moynagh & McKiernan for example.

Speaking of the ref, he even missed a backwards line ball by a Kerry player.

It wasn't a line ball it was a free kick.

A few of the free where soft ones on in particular was an excellent tackle, he missed a couple of possible black cards too.

It does not excuse that second half performance. Maybe there doing too much during the week or maybe there bulking up for the championship. It would be nice to stay up but I'm afraid it may be beyond us. Roscommons win was massive for them realistically we will need three wins now to stay up.

Tyrone, Monaghan and Roscommon should be the targets for wins. Can't see us beating Mayo on current form or the Dubs.

Moynagh named this week but the question is will he start!??

I don't really see what the tactic is of naming Clarke at midfield each week and Galligan at full forward. Why not just name them in their normal positions?

    Still, in Mickey we trust!

The Cavan Mayo match is on Eir Sport 2, but not Eir Sport 2 HD. On my box it's on channel 871. Very odd stuff, I think some people may miss out on the game due to not knowing this.
Meanwhile, the game between Mayo and Cavan at Elverys MacHale Park will also be live on eir sport.

Sky customers will only be able to watch the match on eir sport 2 SD, which is available on channel 422 or 871, depending on your Sky box.

How is this not a foul? Totally changed the game. As usual we are on the end of bad calls.

Conceeding the goal before half time was very much a blow to Cavan’s chances. They seemed very much deflated after that. Unlike the first half of the Kerry game the week before, the ball into the full forward line never stuck and was of much lesser quality. Cavan’s inability to compete physically was also very noticeable. Putting in a consistent level of performance over the course of a full game and creating goal scoring chances have to be the immediate points to address. The defense once again looked solid enough and most of Cavan’s better performers were in that area. A win against Roscommon would be a very welcome boost.

We need to get a free taker who is scoring 90% of what he takes. Even if we have to carry a player, it needs to be done.

Last week, Galligan missed frees at vital times and again last night. Look at O’Shea for Kerry, he is putting any chance at all over.

Today I was at the Meath Armagh game in Navan. It reminded me a lot of the Cavan game last week but the difference was that when Armagh started coming back, Newman nailed the couple of frees he got to keep them ahead.
